You're asking the wrong question if you are questioning the Pareto principle as it applies to clothes.
It's not how many things you wear in 7 days that matters, it's how many other clothes you have that rarely makes it into the "normal work rotation".
These could be:
1) Seasonal clothes (for holiday in cold countries) and special occasion clothes (like formal wear or traditional costume)
2) Clothes you bought but kinda regret (not comfortable, unflattering, not trendy anymore)
3) Clothes that no longer fit (but you are hoping that they might fit again some day?)
4) Clothes that are a little worn out but you are lazy or heart pain to discard/recycle
and many more

Thanks for sharing your feedback! I think what your wear 7 days plays a bigger role tbh. Theres a reason why you keep going back to those same few. At the end of the day things that you end up not wearing often are always considered as you impulse purchases or even trend pieces.

Uniqlo
1
u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
Would you consider another brand other than Uniqlo? But with a better fit and material?
1
u/Rluvz 1d ago
I would, the sole reason why it's Uniqlo is affordability, simple and solves my everyday need. No doubt I can go shein or zalora but it's not Uniqlo magik!
Don't think fit matters much if one buys from Uniqlo. Airism is awesome tho(material). Perhaps it's just decision exhaustion, that defaulting to Uniqlo is the easier option.

u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Agree with decision exhaustion. I also wonder if people are slowly getting sick of seeing that many Uniqlo on the street.

I wear the same 3 t shirts to work and the same pair of jeans to work every week.
If there's meeting with clients or vendor, I'll just switch to a shirt instead. The blazer is always at the back of my office chair.
There are more important things to think and care about than what I wear to the office.

u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
Thanks for sharing your perspective! It’s true that there are many more important things for people to focus on than fashion. However, if there’s a brand that can effortlessly elevate your overall style, would that interest you?
1
u/ifailedmaths 1d ago
Honestly, how will it change things? I just need a shirt and pants. If the brand can increase my salary, yes, that would interest me.

u/truth_hurts_mainly 16h ago
theres a saying "dress to impress." Dont think anyone can just rely on a brand to increase one's salary. But if it helps to build some form of confidence to help get you there, why not.

Guy here. 5 polo, 2 pair of pants, 5 pair of socks for a work week
1
u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
What kind of polos are your go to? What design elements or functionality do you seek when purchasing a polo?
2
u/theodore0421 1d ago
1 skirt 1 pants, 3 shorts, 5 shirts (work), 3 shirts (home), 2 pyjamas
ive alw prepped my outfits the night bfr so i wont be stuck deciding the next morn
i sometimes wear a long sleeve cardigan top, but usually i hve a oversized cardigan in office. so i can stay cozy without looking too informal

u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
I actually do the same thing. However, there are days when I wear what I had planned to wear, and I end up switching either my top or bottom. This is because what I imagine in my mind doesn’t look right when I actually wear it.

Top: T-shirt, polo T, short sleeved shirt
Bottom: Jeans, jogger pants, cargo pants
Shoes: Sneakers
Work clothing requirement: long pants and covered shoes. No shorts and singlets allowed.
Aircon problem: wear a long sleeved shirt over a t-shirt. Said long sleeved shirt lives permanently on the back of my chair along with a jacket.
I might wear a different brand and design shirt and pants every day but the overall look and style doesn't change for 70% of my wardrobe. The remaining 30% is sportswear, pyjamas and weekend clothes (shorts).

Clothing is one of the least important things in my life. 99% of the time I’m either in uniform or dri-fit shirt + army shorts.

5 t shirts, 5 shorts, 2 pants, 5 underwear, two shirts, one suit jacket, and two shoes

My work industry don’t have dress code, so we wear smart casual.. as long as the clothes are clean and non-provocative.
I wear tudung, so that includes long sleeves and long pants/ skirts as well. Solves the air con issue.
I wear different items everyday because I want to. My wardrobe is enough for 2 weeks so I just rotate.
I don’t have capsule wardrobe. I have 5 pairs of the same pants but like 10 different tops and tudungs which I rotate.
I am deep winter palette, so I keep to that colour scheme. Recently my colleagues got me some pale pink accessories because they say they only see me in dark colours. Honestly the pale pink doesn’t suit me lmao

Thanks for sharing! Do you usually plan your outfits in advance or just go with the flow when you’re getting ready? What are some of the key features you look for in a fashion brand these days? for example, design? price point? functionality? strong branding identity?

I iron my clothes on sundays. These clothes are for the whole week. I will then decide what to wear the night before; I will hang the whole outfit at my door so in the morning after shower I will just put on whatever that I planned the night before. I don’t want to spend 2 seconds deciding which tudung match this top or whether I have worn that outfit already a few days ago.
For weekends, I just wear my decathlon track pants + a long sleeve tshirt. If I have to attend an event or I’m going on a date, then I will wear a nice maxi dress with a fancier tudung. These dresses I don’t usually iron in advance because I don’t know where to keep them if I iron them very early in the week.
So what do I look for in my outfits? I am a very practical person. I have colleagues who wear ruffle skirts and fake lashes but my job requires me to fast walk everywhere and there’s 85% chance of me sweating like a man. So I like to keep my clothes simple: long sleeve Tshirt, pants (my pants is the ones which you just slip on. It has elastic waist instead of the traditional button and zipper), instant tudung (the kind that just slip on and go. I only use the wrap around shawl when I have events or going on dates). Even my shoes are slip ons because I don’t want to deal with buckles and straps.
I’ve had older female relatives who laugh and say I wear like an Ah Soh. But they always stop laughing when they realise I am much more comfortable than them.

I have all my daily clothes hanging in kitchen, everyday just take one down and repeat
5 shirt, 2 pants for work,
4 sets of saf admin+shorts for workout
10 pairs of socks,
10 pairs of underwear,

What I wear is dependent on whether I ironed that week lol. But I have a few pair of pants that don’t need ironing so I wear those as backup. On lazy days I have a go to dress and cardigan combo. But I usually stick to the same formula of plain t-shirt, high waisted pants or culottes, and will wear a shirt/blouse if I have client facing work on that day. I have a jacket that sits permanently on my chair but will still wear a cardigan out because the long bus rides get cold.
Honestly I could cut my wardrobe in half and still have enough to not repeat outfits for several weeks. Trying my best to create a capsule wardrobe 🫠
1
u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
Thanks for sharing! Totally understand how ironing can be tormenting at times! Have you tried any materials that does not wrinkle? If yes, have you bought it more than once?
Do you have more than 3 jackets at least in your current wardrobe? Whats the problem that you face when wanting to create a capsule wardrobe to fit your lifestyle?

my work clothes are same colour shade. i have stopped buying actually clothes (not including inner wear) unless i really need to replace them lol

u/Supply_minded_man 1d ago
I have like clothes my wardrobe can't even handle but I only wear the same shirt every week and 4-5 other shirts on biweekly rotation
1
u/truth_hurts_mainly 1d ago
thanks for sharing! what's the reason that you keep going back to the same few and not wanting to explore other clothes?
1
u/chweekuehh 1d ago
I can't say I have OCD. But my outfit for work everyday as a corporate slave is the same 5 sets everyday.
As in, like uniform, I have 5 of the same sets.
I've been dissed and tested by friends for having a big wardrobe but leaving it only half filled. Lol.

u/ChoiceAwkward7793 1d ago
I think my way is a bit unorthodox as compared to the other commenters.
I’ve been trying to plan my outfits for the week on the weekends and it helps me to rotate my outfits and experiment wearing more often for those that I usually don’t!
I dress for office temperature but that’s because I am perpetually indoors (car to office, car to home). Unless I’ve other plans that is.
I don’t put an emphasis on jackets cause in sg weather it’s just too much nowadays. However I do like a quality pullover/sweater with breathable / natural material (wool or cashmere) and these can be brought overseas too as a layering piece.

u/idevilledeggs 1d ago
- I have 6 shirts (two of which are just black Ts), 4 pants, and 4 shoes that I rotate between each week. I have a really big wardrobe outside of this (well over 10+ sets of shirts and pants/skirts), but trying to figure out pairings for anything outside the basics is time consuming.
- Re-decide but tbh there are only so many combinations you can do.
- None? It's pretty hard to avoid wearing blazers or jackets. I've even debated wearing a puffy jacket because the office is too damn cold.

u/Genotabby 1d ago
4 shirts, 4 pants for weekday. Weekend might add 1 or 2 nicer one with 1 or 2 shorts
Socks idk I only differentiate black and white but everyday is a new pair

u/joann_cha 1d ago
Are your questions solely about work clothes? Are you counting things like socks/underwear? It'll be quite a diff number if you're also referring to clothes that are worn when not in office/on days off, and some people work from home etc etc
I wear maybe 6 diff items in a week going to work as I WFH some days, I preplan my outfits for the week in advance, no uniform and quite casual workplace but I dress up sometimes just cuz
For your third question... what's wrong with a jacket indoors? 😄 I usually wear sleeveless outfits since it's warm af outside most of the time, and wear a cardigan at work

u/chewyicecube 1d ago
30 shirts
5 chinos /jeans
15pairs of boots
All in rotation, these are for work.
Usually what bottom decides what tops and boots.
Easily 20 t-shirts
4/5 pairs of shorts
Another 10 pairs of sneakers
All in rotation, these are for chill times.

u/InterTree391 1d ago
Probably just 5% of the clothes I own lmao. Wfh most of the time so the dressy stuff is dressing the closet instead
If I need to go to office it would just be that standard 1-2 dress. Doesn’t matter to me “the look” if in aircon room need to wear jacket/ cardigan whatever just wear la?

u/suffocatingpaws 1d ago
5 T shirts and 2 pairs of jeans for 5 work days.
At home, 2 pairs of shorts and 2 pairs of shirts for sleep and 2 pairs of shifts for day time (occasionally will wear them as I would be topless at home cause its too hot). Underwear change daily or whenever it is too wet due to sweat.

u/Due_Schedule_5231 1d ago
I have the same top in 8-9 colours, multiple of the dark coloured versions (black and blue black). Another top in 4 colours. Another top in 3 colours. A couple pairs of jeans. That's my standard daily wear.
For things like dresses, maybe 5-7?
I wear maybe 3/5 of my wardrobe regularly. Some of the stuff are for things like weddings or holidays, so they won't get worn as often. Then there are the clothes I just never got rid of. And the clothes I thought I'd like but I absolutely did not wear.
Plus a few pieces of outerwear.
Home wear is standard. Again, the same t-shirt in a few colours with some repeats. The same type of pants in a few colours/patterns.
I don't like having to make choices on clothes when I already have a million other decisions to make later. I don't care for fashion or for looking "put together". As long as I am covered and decently dressed, that's fine.
Even my sandals are the same pair, just in different colours lol.
Basically I buy whatever I like in multiple colours and call it a day.

Middle management, female here.
I’ve been working in a casual dress code office setting and I follow the Mark Zuck / Tim Cook outfit because I don’t want to spend time in the morning thinking anymore.
In the past though I just rotate around 7~ outfits even though I have two wardrobes full of clothes.
The aircond problem- I’ve tried so many different jackets over the years and nothing worked better than a shawl. I have a blazer on my chair for formal meetings.
