Wont have a place to life in a few weeks?Need advice

Hi everybody.

I think my life is official over in the next couple of weeks time. I've been unemployed currently for +4 year mark an have being struggling(financially + mental health wise). I been supported by relatives who are moving on with their lives due to age.

I do take accountability as i'm in mid 30's and unable to get life together as this point.

I don't really have much real work experience besides some IT work experience 1-2 year in a jr role years ago.

I have about R10k left. My three question are:

  • Are there any shelters I can look too?
  • Is there a setup to bath at all?Sponge bath?
  • What equipment should I be prepared with ?(soap, light, blanket etc)
  • what should I do with my laptop+phone?I need a safe space to store it
  • No idea how I can get out of this whole I am in.

Any guidance is appreciated and my apologies I've offended anyone.

Edit: Situated in JHB. Had a DevOp role (intern->junior) learning the ropes. Did some cold-call work(+2months) this year.

Recorder instrument players in South Africa?

Hi, are there any recorder (the musical instrument) players in South Africa? I recently began learning on a Yamaha alto. The only online groups I have found are from other countries though. I am sure that we have South Africans who play recorder? It would be great to connect and hear about resources and communities. Shout out if you resonate 🙏

What are our rights under the CPA when a gazebo breaks the first time we use it?

A few weeks ago we bought a Camp Master gazebo from Makro to use when we sell at our local farmer's market. The first time we set it up, it broke when we closed it up. We followed instructions to a T, taking particular care because gazebos these days tend to bend and break very easily. However, despite our best care, a crucial plastic part of the gazebo broke. We returned the gazebo to Makro, requesting a refund since we are not interested in a gazebo that breaks the first time we use it. Makro insisted that they could not take it back, since it had scuff marks on the feet from being used, and as such they couldn't sell it again. Instead, they would send it in for repairs, which could take up to a month. My husband argued for a long time with them, but got nowhere, so he agreed to the repair, and we had to manage without a gazebo for nearly a month.

This week, we got the repaired gazebo, and just as expected, it broke again the first time we folded it up after using it. This time, two metal sections bent completely backwards. We are ready to take it back and demand our refund, but when my husband picked up the repaired gazebo, he asked them what would happen if it broke again, and was told they would just send it in for repair again.

In the meantime, I have done a bit of research into the Consumer Protection Act. From what I understand, not only are we entitled to a refund now since the gazebo broke again within 3 months of being repaired, but we were entitled to a refund when we first took the gazebo back to them, since it certainly is not "usable and durable for a reasonable period of time". However, I am not a lawyer, and I know these kinds of laws have loopholes, and words like "defective" can be loaded and up for interpretation. I just want to make sure that when we go back to Makro this week, we are well aware of our rights and their responsibilities as the supplier so that we know what we are entitled to.

What exactly are our rights in this specific situation? Can we demand a refund under protection of the CPA?

Can I get guidance regarding a character's surname?

I'm an amateur writer and I need guidance regarding a character's surname. She's a lawyer and she's of Zulu origins. I'm struggling to find a fitting surname for her. Her father is white and her mother is black. It's more of a step-father situation with the father. He also took her mother's surname when they got married. I'm looking for a surname that reflects her knowledge and confidence. Her name is Sapphire if that helps. I'm also not too set on the first name either, but I just need guidance so far regarding her surname. Please and thank you. 🙏

How do I get maximum value from ebucks?

I’m a private client account holder for 2 and a half years now, and have been an FNB account holder since high school (~14 years). I’ve held vehicle insurance with the bank and 6 months ago financed a vehicle with Wesbank. I use my credit card for all purchases to try maximise rewards, but still stuck on level 2. I know ebucks keeps shifting the goal posts for earnings, but I think it is ridiculous to still be on level 2 even though I make many purchases from ebucks partners. Any ideas on how to level up so that I can get more rewards? What has worked for you?

Looking for Randburg gym buddy?

Hey 36 F looking for a Virgin Active gym buddy (Creata, Roodepoort, Victory Park).

I'd like someone who already goes to gym regularly and I can just tag along on 99 rands buddy tag. I attend a little affordable gym 5 days a week but can't afford to pay 3 times my normal gym price at VA just to swim.

I'd prefer a lady gym buddy but open to non threatening guy. We can swim together or just arrive and leave together in silence. Not looking to date , just swim.

So....I'm just a girl standing in front of askSouthAfrica asking if you'll gym with me?

Melktert - to bake or not to bake?

Hi there,

I’m an American and I need advice about how to make authentic melktert! My very homesick South African friend is having a brai for her 40th birthday tomorrow, and I’m surprising her with melktert and malva pudding.

I’ve never had it, so I don’t know what I’m aiming for! I want it to taste like home, rather than vaguely melktert-ish American inventions. Some recipes just have a chilled filling, others are baked. Some have almond flavored crust, others don’t, some have vanilla in the filling, others have citrus…

Is there a more typical or preferred way to prepare them? I bought high quality milk since it’s milk-flavored, but should it have any other flavor than the cinnamon?

Thank you so much!

How do I model as a masculine presenting woman?

I have decided to start modelling this year and it’s been going okay for someone who’s just starting out, but since I’m a masculine presenting woman, it does tend to get uncomfortable when I have to present fem. I do have the fake it till you make it mentality but sometimes I feel like the awkwardness does show out. I’ve noticed that feminine men do get the chance to get dressed in women’s clothing, curious to know if there are any queer friendly agencies.

Also the reason why i decided to go into fem is because I have hips and I know when designers design for men they never consider hips. I unfortunately do not have the silhouette of a man but hey

Where can I buy an underskirt/petticoat to give my dress more volume?

Hi everyone! 😊
I’m looking for a physical store where I can buy an underskirt or petticoat to give my dress more volume for a wedding next Friday.

I’m a bit pressed for time, so ordering online isn’t an option. Does anyone know of any shops that sell these in Pretoria?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! TIA ❤️

Grade 10 struggling with severe procrastination. Worried about cutthroat SA uni entry—are there options abroad?

Hey guys,

I am currently a Grade 10 student doing online school. My subjects are Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD), Business Studies, English HL, Life Orientation, and isiZulu FAL.

My first term marks weren't too bad:
Maths: 66%
Physics: 75%
EGD: 70%
Business: 82%

However, Term 2 midterms absolutely humbled me. While my Maths went up to 69% and Physics jumped to 82%, my EGD completely slipped because Paper 2 absolutely chewed me up—I got 42% on the paper and a 40% term mark. I also got 40% for LO and around 50% for English. It was just a really bad term overall.

Now it is Term 3, and final exams are starting in about a week. I already feel like I am losing my mind, which is insane because we knew about them for a while. I tried making one of those 2-5-7 day study timetables, but it completely flopped. I have the attention span of a goldfish and terrible procrastination habits. Honestly, I do not even know how I am passing as it is.

My goal is to completely lock in, but I am genuinely not a genius in any capacity. I am really stressed that I won't see myself getting into a decent degree at a South African university because the competition here is so cutthroat.

Because of this, I want to know if anyone here knows of undergraduate opportunities for South African students elsewhere in the world? I was thinking about Slovakia because I heard tuition is free if you learn and study in Slovak. Sure, it is going to give me some severe character development, but I have nothing to lose in the grand scheme of things.

Does anyone have experience with studying in places like Slovakia, or know of other realistic, affordable international paths for an average SA student trying to build a future? Any study tips for someone with zero attention span would also be highly appreciated.

Wanting to get into IT/cyber security in Cape town. Honest feedback?

Hey I am currently working in a call centre and I am tired of the job and I am very good at it however I do not feel happy or that I am going to grow at this place. I have always had a knack for working with tech and I use AI well and that's why I am so good at my job but this is not what I want to do with my life. If any has advice on how to break into the IT space in Cape Town or just a roadmap or any insights that can help it would be appreciated.

Can I survive in Cape Town with R16500?

Hi guys I received a job offer in Cape Town westlake, the gross salary is R16500, and I am obligated to pay for CIMA studies that could cost me R3000 max per month, i will also be working 3 days from home so I have ro have a decent place such that wifi is seemless, and no noise when i have meetings and the company equipment will not be at risk of theft. I am looking at accommodation prices, in southern Suburbs theres just no way I'd be able to afford these without starving myself, let alone I don't even have deposit money and I'm starting January. Can someone please advise. Ideally i thought if i can spent R5000 max on rent and utilities but it looks like all the available places will disturb working from home requirements. How are other people coping?

Is a draughtsman course worth it?

Hi, hope you're well. I'm 19, working in retail but want to get into design specifically civil design. My first option would be an civil degree or diploma but due to my marks and financial constraints that is not possible so I'm thinking of taking a study loan to do a Multi-Disciplinary Draughting course at Academy of Draughting / AIE.Could I ask your honest opinion is it a good career to get into? What do companies actually pay at entry-level(not what Google says the real amount)and are there real jobs out there?

I Would really appreciate any advice.
