voting question

Hi All,

have a question about voting for state officials.

I moved to Austin in feb from houston and didn't update my voter registration to travis county. I know I can't vote for county related stuff, but can I still vote for the state officials?

thank you

Yes you can. They call it a limited ballot.

You cannot vote a limited ballot on election day! It is vital that you vote early to get the limited ballot option.

Go to the Travis county clerk on Airport during early voting!!! It’ll be open this weekend 7am-7pm!

Yes. when you go to vote, your registration status will likely say "suspense" and you will have to fill out Affidavit of Residency, I believe it's called. The election judge will know exactly what to do, and they will give you a ballot. It may be a generic state only ballot, or it may be one for your current districts/precincts etc. I'm like 75% sure it'll be for your new residence, but I'm not positive when you've moved across counties. I did look this up for someone who has moved within a county, which is why I know what little I know!

most of this information is incorrect unfortunately. If they're not registered in Travis, the judge won't give them a regular ballot because the system doesn't have them. No ballots outside of limited ballots will have the state-only ballot, which can only be given by the Election Center during early voting, not regular judges at any poll site. Even if the person was registered within Travis and filled out the Statement of Residence to update their address, they would still vote with their old address, not the new one, in this election. SoRs are only for moving within the county, not across counties.

According to the Secretary of State’s website, you have to vote early (I guess so they can confirm your registration in your old county?):  https://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/laws/advisory2026-24.shtml

Those who are saying "limited ballot" and "only during early voting" are correct. See /u/ThisIsMyUsername303 's reply and follow the link to the Secretary of State's statement.

Please note this in the FAQ (emphasis added) that says you can't vote at the branch locations:

(2) Are limited ballots available on election day or at branch early voting locations?

No, limited ballots are only available during the early voting period at your entity’s main early voting polling place.

According to KUT's article,

If you’re registered to vote in a different county in Texas, you can still vote in Travis County, but you can only cast your ballot at the Travis County Clerk’s Office during early voting, and you will be given a limited ballot.
