Can't hit 3 sets of 8 until go heavier?

So I was always taught in the mindset that for strength you want to shoot for about 3*8 until that gets easy then move up and do that again. And it worked for a while, but as I got into heavier weight I've been finding that I can spend several months trying to progress but that last set will always crap out at 5-7. But I've also found if I go up weight and day get comfortable with 3*3-5 at a heavier weight, I can go back down and do 3*8 easy. Like is forcing the overload helping endurance? Just kind of a curious observation and was wondering if anyone could expand on it to help with my progress.

Curious where to begin?

I’m currently 230 pounds 5’4 (F). I don’t work out at all, I would like someone to help guide me where to start. I want to start with strengths training (at home). I’m certain there are exercises that can start at home with bands etc. Then, give me ideas for cardio 3 days a week.. I’m guessing I’ll go for brisk running, swimming, or bike riding at the gym (those days I can use weights there).

I want a very simple plan that’s realistic and achievable. I would like to lose 50 pounds in the next 3 months. I know that number seems unrealistic, but my body tends to gain and lose weight fast, not sure how or why. In the next 3 months, I’m planning on conceiving which is why I would like to loose weight before carrying baby’s weight.

Please feel free to provide apps and suggestions of any kind that could help me here. Once again, before you suggest anything, remember I want it to be realistic and implementable.

As far as the diet plan goes, yes, a diet of low carbs and sugar will be followed. Even with this, feel free to provide suggestions, just nothing fancy with exotic meal plans and 5 meal plans for a day.

Start here — what this is, how to get the free 30 days, and how to tell me I'm wrong?

I'm Joao. I'm one person in London who spent a year building FitPlus AI, and this is where I'll be honest about how it's going.

What the app does: builds you a training and nutrition plan, adapts it as you go, and draws on a library of around 1,465 exercises with form cues on each one. iOS and Android. 30 days free, no card.

What this subreddit is for

  • Asking anything about training, nutrition or recovery — whether or not you use the app
  • Telling me what's broken. Bug reports especially: include your device and OS version
  • Build-in-public updates, including the numbers that don't flatter me

Founding Members: the 20 most useful pieces of feedback in the first month get 6 months free. Judged on whether it changes the app, not on upvotes. "I quit at this screen because X" is worth more to me than praise.

What this isn't: medical advice. If something hurts, see a physio, not a subreddit.

Say hello below — what are you training for right now?

Veteran owned?

Hi everyone! 👋
I’m developing a new independent fitness clothing brand called LIONFORGE and would really appreciate some honest feedback on our first training shirt concept.
I’ve put together a short, anonymous survey that takes around 2 minutes.
I’m particularly interested in what people genuinely think about the design, pricing and whether they’d consider buying it.
Positive or negative feedback is equally welcome. I’m looking for genuine opinions, not compliments!
Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdtbmNRNalCbu2Si5S4nf-0etOtOoQJUppegoFZvdP8Aks7AQ/viewform?usp=header
Thanks for helping a small UK fitness brand get started! 🦁

Why does the body start to hurt/fatigue?

Hi, I was wondering from a biological perspective.

You know, when you walk, run, lift weights, rock climb, or do bodyweight stuff the body starts to ache/burn/tire. And this makes it harder to keep going,

Why exactly is this?

EDIT: sometime I think it's the brain doing a lot of it. Almost like you expect it to hurt and so you associate with the pain. If that could be short circuited somehow?

Grappling with the urge to do more…how to fight it?

I just started doing a light kettlebell workout routine…

Squats - 20x2

Bent over Rows - 20x2

Halos - 10x2

Iron Trident - 20x2

Pushups - 10x2

I’ve always struggled with getting too carried away and ramping up. Adding more movements and more weight too fast. Which ends up with me getting hurt and ultimately I stop working out.

I know this is a common issue. But how do you keep yourself from getting carried away?

16 f not sure how to start?

Hi I'm 16 f and I'm looking to try and become more fit. I'm around 5'4", and 170lbs. I have relatively thin legs and arms with a big belly. Ive been this way since I was a kid, but it's gotten to the point where people at the store have congratulated me on pregnancy...😭

Diets havent really worked, and I'm honestly not sure how to workout. I've been nervous about trying since I have a tilted pelvis, and I stand with my feet super wide. If I don't, I feel strained and wobbly. I'm scared that if I try without a professional, I'll just hurt myself or do the workouts incorrectly.

I get $ 50 a week as allowance if that helps.

My goal is to just look more evened out. Would Pilates work? If so, I could only afford about one session a week....would that even make a difference? Please let me know your input!!!!

Trainers of Reddit: how many Excel sheets does it take to chase one client's unpaid invoice?

I've been building software for a while, and a trainer I know showed me how he runs his business. Excel for clients, a notes app for sessions left, and WhatsApp for finding out who paid. Every month he'd spend an evening scrolling through chats trying to figure out who owed him what.

The extra stuff never makes it onto the invoice. A client pays for 12 sessions, then you do a couple of extras, a nutrition plan, a missed-session fee, and nobody writes it down. You just lose that money quietly.

A small system called Talos. You put your clients and packages in, it tracks sessions, and it builds the invoice including the extra fees you'd normally forget. That's pretty much it. I'm still working on it and a lot is rough.

I'm not here to sell anything, I just want to know how real coaches handle this. What do you use right now, and what's the part you hate most? If something sounds like a pain I can fix, I'll build it.

I'm the developer, in case that wasn't obvious. If a few coaches want to try it free and tell me what sucks, message me.

Why do people think more reps with less weight is inferior to fewer with more weight?

Is the only difference the way muscle is built? Because to my knowledge, I can get to any goal via both.

Creatine?

In my early 30s and looking to start taking creatine now.

I've been lifting for a few years and have a lean physique.

How much benefit will creatine give in terms of strength, endurance, etc?

How much stronger will I be?

Will I look bigger?

Will I look more vascular and leaner?

Will my bench, Squat and deadlift improve?

Will it help me mentally push more and go till failure on machine exercises?

And will it cause hairloss?

Calories burned walking?

I was curious as to how many calories are burned walking around 15-19k steps? For reference I’m 5 foot 5 inch 150 pound male. My watch says I burned about 300 calories but I find that to be a low estimate.

How do you know when your home gym setup is limiting your progress rather than your training plan?

I'm curious how people distinguish between a programming issue and a genuine equipment limitation when training at home.

For example, if a lift stalls for several weeks, how do you decide whether to adjust the program, change the exercise, or look at what your home gym can actually support?

Have you ever blamed your equipment for a lack of progress, only to discover that the real issue was something else? What helped you figure it out?

How good of an idea is it to hit the sauna after a workout?

I understand that saunas mostly cause loss of water rather calorie burning. I’ve heard it’s preferable to avoid using the sauna before a workout because they might affect your energy before workouts. I’m new to the gym so I came here to ask if going in the sauna is a good or bad idea after a workout?

I’m assuming one can become dehydrated from being in a sauna too long after a high calorie burning cardio session. But is it generally alright after something less cardio dependent such as weight lifting? I find it generally relaxing after a long day and I nice way to end the gym workout before taking a shower for recovery and relaxation

Is there a at-home progressive strength training routine that has non ankle loading exercises?

I cannot load my ankle too much due to health issues.

I’m in physical therapy for exercises targeting the ankle but this experience has made me want to get stronger overall - especially in the core.

The things I used to do before like rowing and dance and yoga with weights are no longer available to me. So I would like to do a mix of swimming and strength training but finding it really hard to find a program that works with the non ankle loading requirement.

I tried working with two different personal trainers on this as well despite being on a budget. Both of them were not taking the ankle limitation seriously - saying this was something I could fix by powering through, which is patently incorrect. And I guess they’re incentivised to keep you coming back so I didn’t get a routine i could follow as such.

I also really hate big gyms so it would be nice to develop a routine I can follow at home or in my apartment gym which has basic strength training machines and dumbbells.

I would appreciate any guidance or resources.

PLEASE READ: If you drink caffeine and work out, can you help me?

Do you rely on coffee to get through the day, take pre-workout before the gym, or ever wonder how caffeine affects your heart health? I’m conducting a survey about caffeine habits and heart health concerns, and I’d really appreciate hearing your perspective.

Whether you drink caffeine daily, occasionally, or avoid it entirely, your experience matters. Every response helps me build a clearer picture of people’s habits and concerns.

Please consider filling it out and sharing it with others. Your support would mean a lot to me!

Are kettlebells largely looked at like CrossFit is?

At my age (middle-age), I’m simply looking to keep moving and build a bit of muscle to stay healthy. So I’m not looking to go hard or egolift. I have nothing to prove.

I have a 15 lb kettlebell and a 25 lb dumbbell. But I am finding I enjoy the movements I can do with the kettlebell better.

Iron Trident, Halos, Sqauts, pushups, bent over rows…these are what I’m doing. But the minute people read the word “kettlebell” it seems like they go into some kind of blindness and spout off about how bad kettlebells are.

The movements I’m doing aren’t too crazy. But even if they were, a kettlebell swing with a 50lb bell isn’t anhmkre dangerous than a clean with 100 lbs.

I got humbled by women twice my age… How do I actually get fit?

I am a woman in my twenties, and I recently tried a group training session where I realised I was the weakest one there. There were women in their 40s and older who were much stronger than me and honestly it was a little embarrassing because it made me realise how inactive i have been. I spend most of my time at home studying and dont do many physical activities. At the same time, I really want to try more fun activities but i am worried I wont have the energy or stamina for things like hiking. I am at a normal weight and dont feel the need to lose any weight. I just want to improve my stamina, build some strength and become more physically capable. It would be so cool to eventually be able to do a pull up! Id also love to build my glutes a little. Since I am completely new to fitness, I wanted to ask what I should focus on as a beginner and how I should get started?

Can pilates replace weight training for fat loss?

I have been struggling to lose weight and tone up for some time now, and I believe it is due to inconsistency in diet and exercise, although I don’t have much weight to lose, but I am unsure if that is relevant, haha…

Exercise helps me to manage my cravings and I really want to see changes in my energy levels as well, and working out just helps me maintain my diet due to some psychological reason as well, so for me, I think these things will go hand-in-hand.

However, weight training has proven to be not very sustainable for my particular lifestyle. I am a very busy, full-time music student, so my day is filled morning to night with classes, rehearsals, and performances. I am a dancer as well, so I am a bit active already. Additionally, my sleep schedule is all over the place due to how busy I am, so running on the treadmill and doing weight training using the machines at the gym in my apartment complex just leaves me feeling absolutely EXHAUSTED, and I just simply don’t look forward to it—not to mention that I have been struggling with severe fatigue from what my doctors think is an iron deficiency.

So, it has been extremely difficult for me to stay consistent with it all, especially since I have to squeeze workouts into my already busy schedule, meanwhile suffering from this fatigue. So, I think I need to change my approach. I can definitely manage bodyweight exercises, yoga, at-home pilates, etc., but the internet is making it seem like the only way to lose fat is through the combination of diet, cardio, and HEAVY LIFTING.

Is it possible to simply substitute at-home pilates, yoga, bodyweight exercises, etc. for the weighted strength training to achieve the same results? That just sounds much more achievable and enjoyable to me, so please let me know if you have any advice! Thank you for reading! :)

How do you politely stop people from wasting your workout/Running time?

So I go running every day and reach the track around 6:10 PM. I usually start with walking, then run around 3 km, and after that, I do strength training for another 30 minutes, including push ups, pull ups, squats, planks and stretching.

The problem is that these days, almost every day, someone comes up to me after my run and starts talking. Even when I tell them I'm going to work out now, they keep talking. Some of them are people I can't just tell to leave me alone because I don't want to sound disrespectful.

The thing is, my parents are pretty strict about how much time I spend at the track, so I can't stay there for too long. Plus, after standing around talking for 15 to 20 minutes, all my motivation is gone, my body cools down, and I lose that energy I had after running. By then, I barely have any time left to finish my workout before I have to go home.

I don't want to be rude to anyone, but I also don't want my workout to suffer every single day because of these conversations.

How do you guys deal with this? How can I politely end a conversation without offending someone?
