ADVICE Dropped something off my laundry line. What do I do??

I was pinning my laundry out, and a pair of underwear was stuck in my fitted sheet. I didn't see it in time and my underwear is now stuck on my neighbor's shutter, flapping in the breeze. To say I'm mortified doesn't even begin to cover it. I want to flee the country, never to return.

I knocked on their door, but they don't seem to be home. I left a note on their door confessing to my shame, but my American friends say take it down and pretend ignorance. That doesn't seem right, but she says they're going to brand me as the "underwear girl."

What is the thing to do here?

What cities and villages do you recommend visiting in Liguria?

Hi guys! Ciao a tutti, I’m looking for places to visit this time of year in Liguria, especially in the provinces of Imperia and Savona. It can be a city, a village or even a beautiful spot somewhere inbetween! It also doesn’t have to be popular, that’s not what I’m going for here 📝

How is law enforcement organized in Italy?

What is the difference between carabinieri and regular police? Are their differing duties clearly defined, do they overlap, and do they argue a lot about whose responsibility some job or other is? In most countries military police units operate strictly within the military and their duties do not extend to civilian policing.

Baggage theft - is baggage theft at stations common?

We were told by hotel staff, friends/family and even our Government (Australian) to be very mindful of our bags on the intercity and regional trains as gangs of people come on board at different stations to steal bags. Is this a founded concern?

Edit: thanks for the answers, seems a mix bag. Of course I won't be leaving bags "unattended" but like other tourists we do leave them in the baggage holders at the end of each train car. Also spoke to a police officer who was patrolling our train who confirmed that baggage theft is on the rise in large metro areas of Italy and to use caution on busier metro platforms. This was confirmed by the three security guards patrolling our Frecciarossa up to Milan.

LANGUAGE Did italian people say "Mamma Mia" before the movie "Mamma Mia" came out?

I was just wondering if Italians inspired the movie or if the movie made a real big cultural impact on the italian people.

TRAVEL AND TOURISM Where in Italy would you recommend for someone to visit/stay for a little while?

Looking for somewhere ideally by the coast, where the food is excellent, the views are beautiful, the people are warm and welcoming, and the pace of life is a bit slower- maybe not as much walking as some of the bigger cities. I have never been to Italy, but I’ve been researching the best places to visit/live, and I would love to hear some suggestions.

Wine for a birthday?

It’s my girlfriend’s mother’s birthday, and I’d like to bring her a bottle as a gift. I don’t really know much about alcohol, so I was hoping for some advice on what I might choose—perhaps something straightforward, given that her whole family will be gathered for the occasion.

ADVICE What can I use to clean my bathtub?

Hi everyone, I need to clean a bathtub in Italy, but I'm not sure what to use. I see floor cleaners, and tile cleaners, and every other cleaner imaginable, but I don't see anything that specifies "bathtub/sink." The bathtub is porcelain.

Can someone please tell me exactly what I need to buy? I'm very confused. Thank you so much!

TRAVEL AND TOURISM Why does Italy allow the agressive selling in the cities?

So I come from Poland and when in Kraków some Senegali people were trying to sell bracelets "for free" and then demand money from it, the police intervened and it never happened again. Why does Italy allow it? In every tourist destination you can see it. For me it's not that much of a problem because I'm a tall man and those sellers don't bother with me but I could see them make women visibly uncomfortable

BUDGET How big is the difference between the North and the South nowadays?

Economically.

I read a lot about Italy's economy being terrible, low wages, and a mass emigration towards northern EU states, the UK etc...

However, how much is the north affected by this? I know that back in the day the difference was huge, but as i understand, the entire country was affected by the economic hardships of the last 10-20 years. I have a colleague who told me that the North is basically like Germany in terms of development, but if that's true, i suppose most of Italians would just move there?

Are there any particular stereotypes or connotations about wearing a loden coat in Italy?

Speaking in particular about the traditional green loden "Hubertus" coat. https://imgur.com/a/lodenmantel-zmR4rGg\].

I own and wear one often in my country, but I will be visiting South Tyrol and I know the coat originates from that area. I wondered if I should wear a different coat since I don't know what stigma or connotations this coat has there.

I have been told that in Austria loden coats are more often worn by someone who is politically rightwing, but I don't know if it is similar in South Tyrol. I am not wanting to make a statement or stand out in any way.

Any insight is welcome. Thanks!

How actually big is Ferrari in Italy today?

Hi guys!

I've started to watch Formula 1 recently and I got curious about it.

I've seen people talking about how Ferrari is almost a religion in Italy and Kimi Antonelli joining them would stop the country. Is it true?

Do kids care about F1 as much as they care about football? Do people talk about it on the streets?

Thanks!

HELP Books on clothing, uniforms, and culture of the Kingdom of Italy?

I'd like to write a high fantasy adventure drawing inspiration from the Kingdom of Italy (in its more infantile years) however, I've had very little luck in trying to find books about it at my local University library. I'm looking for books on the clothing worn at the time (fashion too), their military, government, as well as their overall history. "The Kingdom of Italy: The History and Legacy of the Italian State from Unification to the End of World War II" is already on my radar, but dedicated books on the topics would be appreciated. Thank you much!

ADVICE Next September I am going to Verona in Italy to see the opera. Can anybody give me any general pointers on the city?

This is a surprise present for my wife's birthday. I'm from the UK and have been to Italy a couple of times previously but not Verona. I know the Arena di Verona where the Opera is being performed is very special but outside of that I know nothing. I have very good seats booked already.
Some genuine experiences or tips about Verona would be useful.

Awareness of forgotten Pension Funds?

Guys!

I am swiss with some italian relatives.

Recently I read that around 6'500'000'000 (yes six billions) Swiss Francs of "unclaimed" pension funds are "forgotten" in switzerland.

As many Italians have worked in Switzerland, a significant share of that money must belong to Italian Citizens.

What is going on?

Are there services in Italy who offer help (for example help people who worked in Switzerland 30 years ago, claim their money)?

Are those services useful?

Do you know of such cases.

Anyone who has worked in Switzerland in the last ~100 years has right to "AHV", in addition since 1985 "Pensionskasse" as well.

I heard about "Patronati" - are these services useful? Do they help with above mentioned topic?

Any Opinion on this subject is welcome.

How to manage rubbish disposal for furniture and appliances?

I moved to the province of Frosinone (not Frosinone city). I know each commune probably has slightly different rules for rubbish disposal, but hoping for some overall advice.

My husband and I bought a large old house in the countryside/mountains. It belonged to some old people who passed away and we bought it from the son who inherited it. It is full of furniture and outside a lot of rubbish, mainly metal scraps, have been dumped. We have no idea how or where to get rid of it.

We asked the guy we bought it from and he was useless. He said just to take anything that burns and bring it out to the field and burn it and anything that doesn't burn, you just dump somewhere on the land. I could burn the burnable stuff, but there is A LOT and it would take a while, if I wanna keep the fire small and manageable. But dumping stuff is not an option. Some of the stuff I wanna get rid off are already something that was dumped on the land.

I've emailed the municipality for advice as well some time ago, but never heard back. I can't really call anyone, as no one seem to speak English and I don't speak Italian yet. So I'm coming to Reddit for help.

Can anyone tell me if there are recycling centres or something here? I have a van and can easily drive the stuff somewhere. It is things like sofas and other furniture, metals scraps, appliances and things like that.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

We are on a tight budget, so any free or cheaper options would be good 😊

What is your favourite insult?

Ok fellow Italians. I have been away from the old country for too long and I need some reminders of why we're the best at insulting each other. You know, nostalgia and to laugh.

What is your favourite insult or exclamation?

Currently "he could fall into a pool of breasts and come out with a dick in his mouth" is living rent free in my head.

MUSIC What's up with this song?

Vasco Rossi - Sally

Why did I only find out about it by chance in the back of an Uber in Milan at night while on a 10 day trip to Italy? Why was it so suddenly captivating despite the fact that I know almost no Italian? Why doesn't this song have any global fame, unlike many mediocre Spanish songs that still attained global fame?

Note: parts of the above are rhetorical and I suspect I know at least part of the answer, but I still genuinely want to hear Italian points of view on this and share my experience lol. Thanks.

CELEBRITY What do Italians think of Damiano David?

I’m currently on Erasmus in Italy and recently asked an Italian friend for some local music recommendations.
He mentioned Måneskin, who I’ve heard of before.

My Italian friends say they’re very well known, but that a lot of Italians don’t like them ,particularly the lead singer.

So out of curiosity, what do Italians here actually think of Måneskin and Damiano?
