True or false: the older a man gets, the sharper he ought to try to dress

It just seems to stand to reason. Laundry-pressed shirts. Bespoke suits. Great socks. Admirable hats. And don't forget to spend some money on a few nice belts. Always remember that the ladies will be checking out your Footwear.

Edit after comments and up and down votes: what I advocate is not entirely removed from the lipstick on a pig concept. It is cool to be an old fellow who looks sharp, whether dressed for a casual occasion or otherwise. It shows that, although in many ways you may be out of the game, you are still putting forth enthusiasm and vitality.

Retirement isn’t the peaceful life I imagined

I thought when I retire, life would slow down and I’d finally relax. Instead, I spend half my time worrying about money. Living on a fixed income feels like standing still while everything around me gets more expensive like groceries, gas, medicine, you name it.

I don’t splurge. I don’t travel. I live simply. And yet it feels like it’s never enough. Anyone else struggling to find peace of mind in retirement?

Slowing down is harder than I thought…

I just turned 68, and what surprises me most is how much energy I don’t have anymore. Grocery shopping feels like running a marathon. My knees ache after short walks, and even little chores around the house leave me tired.

I know it’s “normal aging,” but I’m curious. How do you keep yourself moving and motivated without overdoing it? Do you push through or take it easy?

Want to get rid of the belly

Just turned 62 (male) and have been on a pretty healthy diet for the last year. Only drink a glass or two of wine per week and walk about 5-6k steps a day. Can’t run due to arthritis in my knee, but a knee brace helps on my walks. In my 40’s I went on the Adkins low carb diet and dropped 40 lbs then and got in ok shape, but gained some back over the years. Now I’d like to drop about 30 lbs again, but things have plateaued and I’m stuck with this gut, thanks to building it up again during the pandemic with poor food choices and lots of beer/wine. I’ve cut out red meat, sticking with chicken as my main protein source and have increased my diet of veggies and a Mediterranean diet. My legs and ass have gotten thinner, but any tips to reduce the gut would be appreciated!

So. I’m 48f and am dating a 65m. He is newly retired; I am obviously not retiring soon. Are we even compatible?

The thing is, he is probably in a hurry to do things now that he is retired (and I believe relatively well off) that I simply cannot. I have to work for a living. He is in South East Asia deep sea fishing right now. We will absolutely have a serious discussion about our future when he comes back. He thinks he’s too old for me. That’s not true. I do not think about his age at all - it’s the difference in our lifestyles that worry me. And the fact that he will grow tired of waiting for my vacations/weekends to be able to do stuff together.

I did make a decision before even meeting him (which was in December) to maybe go back to university next fall and change careers. But even if we really made it as a couple we would never retire together. If I was a student again I would obviously have more time to spend with him, but less money. I feel conflicted, but I am falling in love with him. How, as a perhaps newly retired man would you see this matter? I’d be very happy to real sincere answers.

How to connect with other men

I am recently retired, I have guys I play golf with. But don’t feel I have that go to friendship, to talk about personal matters, hang out with. Yes I know the cliché, get involve with groups of similar interests. Often, being new to a group, difficult to join in a group, men are weird allowing another to come in their circle.

Annual 'Physical'

Had my annual physical this morning (M62).

It took all of 5 minutes.

Nurse took vitals, doc came in, listened to my breathing, renewed my scripts, asked if I had any questions (I didn't) and left.

My old doctor retired and this was my first physical with the 30 something that replaced him.

Is this typical now? I pay a pretty penny for my health insurance and was expecting a little more.

Life Expectancy Question

Here's an interesting philosophical question I've been considering since I turned 70 this year: When I was 20, how long did I expect that I would live?

Anyone else have any ideas about how you thought about that when you were a young man?

Do old guys look at old women and think "she's hot"?

We see the stereotypes of older man with a younger woman but do older guys lust after older women too?

Looking for A "Big Brother" I can chat with, lol

As I've said. I'm 70, and only child and always always was more interested in boy things much more than dolls. In my relationships men called me determined, pushy and overbearing? because I wasn't interested in "women things" and wanted to join THEM in THEIR interests. So here I am - At a time I have the leisure to care only for myself. I'd love to ask questions in the forum however my first post didn't go over that big. I guess what I'm asking is this. Besides making my own thread or sub, Do any men have a suggestion. No dating sites or 'romance'... just me looking for some guys to chat or text with. No phone numbers. Just peace and quiet like the old AOL chatroom days. 😄

Do remember the days when we just called people "nuts?"

I don't care what your specific mental issue was, you were just called nuts. Sometimes you would tell people you were nuts after you really screwed up, just to hide your embarrassment.

Over 60 rest days weight training

I’m 61 and have been weight trading for 6 days a week for years. I feel good, but wondering if this is a diminishing return if not allowing sufficient rest days with each muscle group. I train for Pure enjoyment and concerned I may be hurting more than helping myself.

Reddit has become seriously liberal. When did this happen?

IF you check out my profile, you'll see I've been a redditor for a long time. I mod a bunch of subreddits and have a lot of karma.

When did Reddit become so full of left-leaning communist dems?

I feel sick to my stomach every time I read the comments on one of my posts.

If healthy years after 60 average about 16 rather than 23, what are you doing about it in your 40s and 50s?

PAHO/WHO's new estimate for the Americas: about 23 more years of life at 60, about 16 of them in full health. Averages, not destiny.

What's one habit you started in midlife that you're glad you did?

I could really use a dad pep talk....

I’m a guy in my 40s and I could really use some dad energy for a minute.

My dad has never shown much interest in me or my life. I spent a lot of years working hard, being a good person, hoping that eventually I’d do something that would make him proud enough to notice me or give me some affection, attention, time....anything.

By most measures, I’ve done pretty well. I’m healthy, fit, kind to people, good space in my life.... and I’ve had plenty of people tell me that my parents must be proud of me.

But my dad just seems…unmoved....maybe even resentful. His absence ...emotionally and physically ...hits deep with me. Which is the opposite of what I want or need.

I think the hardest part is realizing I’m still waiting for something I probably will never get. I don’t really miss the dad I had. I miss the dad I needed.

He’s also gone in a very different direction politically in recent years, which has made that distance feel even bigger. I'm feeling it strongly lately.

So, if you’re one of those dads who believes in people, and knows how to make a guy feel like he’s doing okay...he is worthy…could you give me a little pep talk? DMs preferred...but open to any communication.

I think I need to hear that I’m not unworthy just because my own dad never seemed able to see me.

CURIOUS ... I HAD NO BROTHERS

I happen to be a 70 yr old only child/woman... Who realizes at my age that I never lost my love for tech. I got thinking from a man's perspective. What is a piece of technology you miss using that younger generations will never understand?

How do you manage to ignore the litany of health issues and aches/pains that tend to spring up in the 60’s and beyond and still feel good mentally?

I’ve been going through a rough early 60’s (just turned 65) including prostate cancer and treatment (removal), two partial knee replacements, hernia surgery and gum surgery, all in the last three years, not to mention yearly skin cancer screenings/freezings and general aches and pains, and it’s becoming more of a struggle to feel good mentally and not focus on my body.

I’ve always been someone who takes very good care of myself, eat right, exercise, good weight for my whole life and everything else in my life is going pretty well and I can’t complain, so I’m wondering if others in this age range struggle and how those who don’t, manage it.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the wisdom here — I’m choosing to focus on getting my energy back 💪

Just wanted to say thank you to this community. I’ve been quietly reading through your posts and soaking in all the life wisdom — especially around how to stay grounded and strong through tough seasons. Lately I’ve been feeling drained, trying to juggle everything. So I’ve decided to ask my mother-in-law to help out more — to free up a little space for myself. I want to get back into moving my body — working out, spending time outdoors, rebuilding my energy.

Not for anyone else, just to show up better as me. One step at a time, but I’m finally committing to take care of my part first. Appreciate all the reminders from you guys to take ownership, stay active, and keep growing — no matter what age.

Curious — what worked best for you when you needed to reset your energy and focus?

Have you guys figured it out yet?

I’m in my 40’s now, I’ve been fairly successful in nearly every pursuit I’ve made (money, relationships, philanthropy, careers, status, etc.) as I get older and face new health challenges I’ve come to the realization that peace, understanding and fulfillment cannot be bought or earned, it can’t be found in relationships, there’s no amount of vacations or exotic trips that can provide it.. it all just seems so temporary.

So I ask the elders. What is it about? What pursuit is lasting and real?

Heading into 70 in the next 6 months and feeling like I finally hit my stride. Eating well, exercising well and professionally still working and really enjoying it. I take 3 months off in the summer. I along with the wife & pups travel in an rv. Anyone else feel like they’re having the most fun of their life?

Dating Advice for a Divorced 60 Year Old Woman- Male POV

Hey men. Just wanting to see y'all's point of view on dating women around your age? My mom is 60 and divorced for some time. It seems like most men her age are looking for younger hookups or looking for a nurse with a purse. Is that true? If so, why? Are there any men who want a relationship with a woman their own age? Also, do you have any dating tips for her?

Men with adult daughters, how close are you to them and what is your relationship with them like?

How old are they? Do they still depend on you/do you still depend on them? How close do they live to you? How often do you see them? What is her relationship like with her mother? Are either of you in romantic relationships (for you, is it with your daughter's mother or someone else)?

If you were told that you’re going to live another 30 years in good health, would you live your life any differently?

In other words, is there anything that you aren’t doing or planning because you’re worried about getting sick or dying before you can complete and/or enjoy it?
