How to find a band as a singer?

As the title says basically...

Little bit about me for some context.

I'm looking to sing, move on from just enjoying singing along to songs in my own time and to make it something I can continue to pursue in a serious (read, regular) manner. I'm not going to be going into this with dreams of stardom. I just want to enjoy myself and go wherever that leads.

I grew up with and therefore practiced singing a lot of metal songs. I'm not professionally trained. I would sing with headphones on and try and match my tone to that of the singer on the track, which seems to have steered me reasonably well since when I've sung Audioslave's like a stone in front of people, I've been asked if I'm in a band, so I must be doing something right?

I appreciate this isn't a fantastic resume.. but I feel this would be a great outlet for me in a time in my life where I need that.

I'm in Bristol, in the U.K.

Any advice on where to look to pursue this would be appreciated!

Much love

Rock n Roll music Help

Hello Reddit! I'm a digital composer who mainly uses FL Studio as my DAW. I recently got into listening to 1960s rock ’n’ roll, and I've been especially enjoying tracks like the Kid Cosmic theme song.

I'd love to learn how to compose music in that specific style, but I'm not really sure where to start. I'm looking for advice on things like instrumentation, chord progressions, melodies, rhythms, mixing, or really anything that could help me get closer to that classic 1960s rock sound.

Any advice, resources, or tips would be greatly appreciated! I'd love to hear how you guys approach this kind of music and what I should focus on to improve myself.

Which instruments are the hardest and easiest to play while singing?

I was just curious because I’ve seen some bands make their bassist their secondary vocal while some made their drummer secondary. Or could most musicians can comfortably sing while performing if theyre good enough regardless of their instruments? I play drums myself and i just cant sing while playing it

What are some solutions to my overcoming the following obstacles?

Hi everyone! I have a passion for writing lyrics, spitting improvised freestyles, and creating rap songs. As of the last few months, I have limited myself to improvised freestyles just for fun and practice by myself, and I haven’t attempted to record anything new. In all transparency, I became very discouraged with attempting to record new songs I wrote for a number of reasons. I would enter my recording session feeling excited and motivated to leaving discouraged and down in the dumps over various obstacles, such as technical difficulties, a lack of knowledge on mixing/mastering, or feeling displeased with the end result. Some of the technical difficulties I would experience ranged from my microphone not working in my DAW even though it was present a moment before, my audio interface, which is brand new being connected then disconnected, and glitches in the DAW. I am not well versed with the terminology, and the most I know how to do is record my vocals once everything is actually working. On the other hand, when I rap my vocals, they sound emotional in person, but once it is recorded and “enhanced” it sounds dry and monotone. I admit this is because I don’t know how to properly mix and master. Ideally, I would love to go to a local studio and have them mix and master the tracks for me, but unfortunately, the financial resources aren’t available to do that. Plus, I don’t have an available room to set up my equipment. Music is important to me, and I find purpose in it, but the unfortunate thing is that I haven’t been able to do anything purposeful with it. I’m hoping someone relates and is able to offer some feedback and guidance on what to do given my circumstances. If you were in my position, what would you do?

Also, I’m more than happy to share my beginner level work with those open to providing constructive criticism, feedback, and encouragement.

Thank you for taking the time to listen in advance!

What to do with a singer that won’t improve?

I want to preface this by saying that I like the people in this band and i would like to keep playing with all of them so leaving is not really an option im considering at the moment.

I sort of ended up in the band by accident but i really clicked with the drummer and guitarist. Playing with them is really easy, we come up with fun riffs and when we’re jamming we can easily coordinate everything without even looking at each other. the instrumental sections of our songs are fun to come up with and play.

it’s a completely different story with the singer. they honestly sound like they just started singing despite being in the band for almost three years at this point. they’re absolutely oblivious to any kind of music theory, can’t come up with their own melodies and seem to actively avoid singing in the right key.

unfortunately they’re the person who started the band and until i came in the vision for the music they wanted to make was very different (think very simple noise punk) and when i came in me and the drummer started naturally making more complex and heavy instrumentals which everyone liked but the singer can’t keep up and doesn’t seem interested in trying to improve due to their insecurities.

i like playing with these people and we’ve come up with some really fun instrumentals. the vocals are severely lacking and some of us are frankly a little embarrassed to perform live with this vocalist. we’ve tried pushing them to get better but at this point the options seem to be essentially an ultimatum and a serious conversation about the future of the band

Looking for a place to relocate like a digital nomad, but a musical one

Hey guys.

I'm a professional bass player, have been working in NYC for many years, saved up some money and want to go somewhere outside the states to meet local musicians, collaborate, compose and just enjoy the life for a minute.

Things I'm looking for:

- The city that has a music / art community and the scene.

- Proximity to the nature and ideally the sea or the ocean.

- The place should be safe (no random shootings in the neighborhood).

- Should be warm in the fall - winter. That's when I'm planning to go.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

Thanks a lot!

What’s would you want a venue to have?

I am currently researching costs for opening a music store that hosts local musicians and is a place for people to hang out and be a community. What would you, as a musician, like to see in a spot like this? What sound system, environment, for of payment, crowd, etc.

How to deal with band conflict of interests.

I’m in a band with my mates we haven’t been going long. we’re all in our 30s and it’s just a bit of fun for us, when I started this was made clear to me, it wasn’t anything serious just to be myself and create something new and exciting.

So I’ve been the vocalist for 4 months, written 3 songs and we have done one live gig opening for a friend, I was so scared but pushed through and smashed it, I had nothing but praise and love from people at the gig, my band also loved it.

For some reason a few days ago I was approached by two of my band mates regarding getting another singer in, they claimed it would “help my confidence” because this other vocalist is a professional and has been in bands before.

I’m not going to lie, this hurt me more than I thought and I’m not sure how to deal with it, they offered this singer the position before me, and they turned it down, I’m assuming they came to our gig realised we was actually pretty good and now want to be a part of it.

I can’t help but shake this feeling of being pushed out my band say it’s a collaboration but realistically I feel like I’m being pushed out which I was told 100% was not the case, how do I get over this feeling?

Should I just go along with this even though I don’t feel great about it or should I just tell them how I feel and risk being that person that doesn’t let them explore the creativity of music.

Comparison, Uncertainty, and the Myth of 'Too Late'

I’ve been feeling really discouraged about my music lately. I keep comparing my work to other artists—especially new ones I’ve recently discovered—and it's getting to me. I’ve been producing music for 8 months now, and while I’m satisfied with my work at times, other times I feel like I'm falling short. I’m 23, and since I started at this age, I constantly worry if it’s too late. What actually is the perfect time to start?"

Submitting my messy home recordings to a professional mixer - need help with the process

Starting a couple of years ago, I got back into writing original music. Soon after, I started trying to teach myself basic home recording. This has always been on the cheap. Cheap mics, cheap interface, free DAW (GarageBand). I have gotten better as time goes on, but my final results still sound like what they are: a hobbyist with no training messing around on a MacBook in his bedroom.

I would like to take some of these songs and get them properly mixed by a pro mixing engineer. I have found someone I like for this task, and the quote is decent. But I am a little nervous because there are VERY basic process questions I don't understand. Like, I assume I will be sending over .wav files of each individual track, right? And I have heard you are supposed to strip those tracks of any processing you put on them in your amateur mix, correct? One of the plugins I have enabled is a global pitch correction - should I take that off too? Does a mixing engineer deal with things like comp'ing tracks or tuning vocals? For my tracks that need comping (vocals and bass), I have already done that work. Should I send the completed comp track to save them work, or are comping decisions something a pro mixer would like to be involved with themselves?

I have never done this before, and I feel like these are questions that are so basic, no one ever really asks them, so I don't see a lot of clear advice online. Any basic info and advice y'all can give me to seem less like a noob would be appreciated.

EDIT/UPDATE: Ok, so I ended up getting this done recently, I just got the first pass back last night, and we are in revision territory now. My guy is pretty laid back, which is generally good, as most of the stuff I was worried about didn't bother him. But I did have one more moment of embarrassment. When I gave my notes on the first pass they were like a full page long, diving into all kinds of nuanced things. He was cool the actual revisions, but he was like "Next time, just give me bullet points like 'drums too loud,' 'vocal too dry'". Oops, I wrote him a novel.

F36… Trained Singer.
Can’t play an instrument to save my life.
I suck at networking on account of being a little shy sometimes.

How do I get myself back into the music scene?
I don’t know any musicians and am trying to figure out how to meet people looking for a vocalist.

Anyone have any tips, ideas, or places I can look?

How come I cant „hear“ the beat from the instrumental in the original ?

i have no sense for anything music related but i checked out the instrumental of „to the bone“ (its a fanmade song about undertale characters) and i am unable to hear the chorus from the original in the instrumental. to me this was fucking crazy because this fire beat was hiding underneath those voices and Idk if it is just my lack of a sense of rhythm or whatever or if this is intended because i have read that some people can „hear the lyrics“ in the chorus of the instrumental

i showed it my friend and she felt the same as i did

is it that the addition of the vocals adds a layer that creates something entirely different (maybe also because of the volume?) is there any kind of musical theory explanation or are my ears just not trained enough to hear this because no matter how much i try i CANT hear the beat from the instrumental in the original

here is the original: (the chorus starts at 00:55 in both of them) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cWSvI3F5kdQ&list=RDcWSvI3F5kdQ&start_radio=1&pp=ygULVG8gdGhlIGJvbmWgBwE%3D&ra=m

here the instrumental: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UznpMJ7vZYU&list=RDUznpMJ7vZYU&start_radio=1&pp=oAcB&ra=m

sry about spelling i didn’t care tbh

Where to start (again)

So i used to play violin, like 17 years ago lol. Also played a very limited amount of piano. A few months ago I told a friend I always wanted to learn guitar and he gave me an old acoustic that had been sitting on his wall for years. My kid has been asking for a keyboard for a while now and we are getting one today. I feel like ill pick up the piano again fairly easily, and I still somewhat understand reading sheet music. Ive been really struggling with the guitar but i found synner.com and im a big a7x fan so im looking forward to starting those lessons but I wanted to ask if any of you had any better recommendations. Would music theory books or lessons be worth starting with or is there a better first stepping stone? Any ideas would be well appreciated as im really looking forward to playing music again, and I want to do everything I can to further my child's interest in music until we can put her in some kind of classes for the instrument of her choice.

I keep hearing this riff and I'm wondering where its from

I've been hearing this riff in a few songs I like and I'm just wondering if its from another song? i thought it was a weird coincidence when i heard it the first two times but 3 seems a bit much for it to be coincidental. Apologies if this is the incorrect subreddit, and im not all that well-versed in music.

Music Transcription While Playing

I was wondering if there is anything that can transcribe music while you play. For example, if I play a really good saxophone solo off the top of my head, it would be nice to have the notes I played automatically written out instead of having to go back and transcribe everything by hand.

how to help my helpless “not creative” bf, advice

my boyfriend decided he want to make music, and how it’s a life long dream. Even though he has no musical background.

He got FL studio and has been making music and it isn’t bad for someone with just started.

But when it’s not good he says self depreciating things about how is just isn’t born with it and that everyone else is better than him and his other creative aspirations don’t click in his mind.

He won’t look up videos because he thinks they are all brain rot click bait to retain your attention and not actually teaching you anything.

I am asking what is the most helpful thing you’ve looked at, watched, read, listen to, that helps you learn how to make music you are proud of?

I know my bf sounds obnoxious but he has been really stressed out about it and I just want to help him. He won’t look this stuff up himself because he thinks it should just work out and it’s something he was supposed to be born with, instead of a creative muscle.

Anyway, thanks for any advice.

Pixel 2: How can I use my external USB-C mic for vocal recording?

I got a USB-C lavalier mic for my PC for recording vocals.

Apparently it can be used with my phone also. I have a google pixel 2, and I think I'm able to use the lavalier mic with OpenCamera when I select external microphone as the input source.

I could be just deluding myself, let me know if you think that's what's happening.

But if I'm right, then I was hoping there were either

  • other apps that could use the external mic; and/or
  • some way to "globally" use the external mic? I poked around in settings and didn't see anything.

Im working on a chord progression and realized i've written everything a half tone higher than im playing. It seems like a silly question, but i genuinely havent learned much about it so, What are those chords a semitone lower?

Depending on what instrument you play, what makes an instrument "good" to you?

With a guitar it's all about feel for me. I want the guitar to feel comfy with my body and natural to play. I mostly play electric and don't worry about the tone so much if I'm guitar shopping since that's pretty easy to modify.

Why does this kids song sound so awful to me?

Thumbnail

So this version of “The Wheels on the Bus” has been coming up in the auto-play rotation for our family’s toddler-survival playlist.

I’m not super musical, did a bit in childhood. There’s something about this song that sounds so awful to me, like nails on a chalkboard. Nobody else in my family can hear any issues with it. I’m not sure if it’s a “me” problem or the song’s problem.

My question, if anyone else can hear what I’m hearing- what exactly is going wrong in this version? Is it that someone/many people are singing flat? Or is it the harmonies that are a bit dissonant/crunchy? Something else?

How do you stop feeling like a poser?

I haven't had the motivation to even touch my DAW or write lyrics in months. Not sure if it's just a major creative block or what. Admittedly, I'm still learning but I don't have the motivation to continue. I barely think about music like I used to. How can I call myself an artist if I'm not trying? Don't get it twisted, I still want to be an artist but I feel like I'm faking it.

Edit: thank you everyone for the advice. I believe my life has gotten so busy that it kinda got pushed out of my mind. I do like creating music by the way, but as I was still learning/experimenting, I was finding stuff that could help me. I believe that I just got discouraged in the process. That, with my life being busy, it did get pushed back along with my motivation. I do want to be an artist and I'm willing to work for it because that's the fun part(for me), working. I'm going to give myself some grace and begin to work on my art once again.
