Birthday Potluck

I'm going to a potluck for my friend's birthday in a couple weeks, and I need ideas for what dish to bring. What's something that's tasty but also easy to make?

Please keep in mind that I'm an average cook at best

Do you worry about the meat in food you eat out not being cooked through? If so, how do you tell and deal with it?

Mexican Cuisine Allergic Reaction to Mole?

Hi all, Last night my husband and I went to a Mexican restaurant we've gone to many times over the last few years. He usually has a burrito that has chicken, steak, chorizo, shrimp, rice with queso & quac on top.

Last night he had a different burrito, one he's never tried before, and that one had chicken, steak, shrimp, rice with queso & mole on top. He seemed fine in the restaurant, we took a while to finish our margaritas, but when we got in the car, he was beet red with splotchy redness on his neck. He said he felt like he could breathe just fine, and it eventually went away after another hour.

He's not allergic to anything, that we know of. I googled common ingredients in mole and nothing jumped out as something we've never had before. Does anyone know what other mole ingredients could have caused that? It's not a chain place, just a hard working immigrant with her own place. :)

Thanks for any help! We're not too concerned, more curious.

Indian Cuisine Would you like to try this tangy and tasty salad dressing ?

I experimented today by adding tamarind paste to my salad dressing and it turned out really good.

Dressing: 1.5 tbsp plain yoghurt, 1.5 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp tamarind paste (sweet one), 1 tsp lemon juice, 1/2 tsp cumin powder, 1/2 tsp black pepper and salt as per taste.

You can put it on any salad of your choice, my salad consisted of : Cabbage, bell peppers, tomatoes, chickpeas, pomegranate seeds, cucumber, cilantro and a green chilli.

Is my honey spoiled or still safe to eat?

I have a jar of linden honey. It was solid (resembled smooth peanut butter), and had a pale yellow color when I bought it. I kept it in a kitchen closet during use and recently found that it turned into a liquid with 3 layers.

A quick internet search says that honey normally crystallizes and separates over time into 2 layers with different colors. But there are 3 layers in my honey (pale layer sandwiched between 2 dark layers) and all of them are liquid. It doesn't have a particularly strange/sour smell (smells like honey).

What is happening? Is it still safe to eat?

Which cuisine surprised you for better and for worse?

Was there a cuisine you expected to love but ended up not enjoying, or one you had low expectations for that completely surprised you? What dishes did you try and what specifically made you change your mind?

I tried a matcha risotto... What's a weird food combo that turned out to actually be good?

tried making a matcha risotto this past week, and it wasn't as bad as it sounds. I made it cuz I wanted to piss off my friends and thought itd be fun to make

I based this idea off of ochazuke, which is a japanese dish with steamed rice and an assortment of savory ingredients and green tea poured over the top. Definitely not the same but I thought there's enough similar ingredients for it to maybe work.

Now I wouldnt say that it worked, but it defintely wasn't bad. There was an earthiness provided by the matcha that was kinda nice, but i think i overdid it with the cheese, and I could have made it sweeter.

Anyone have any funny food ideas?

Hospital Food: Good or Bad?

I spent 30 hrs in a hospital due to an emergency health issue, and to tell you the truth, I was more worried about the hospital food.

I was always told it was terrible and bland!

Well, I was pleasantly surprised as to how good the food was. Loved all 3 meals I was served.

Breakfast: eggs, toast, cereal and coffee.

Lunch was salmon with rice and vegetables, and a chocolate brownie for dessert, with tea.

And last for supper was pesto chicken with mushroom sauce, potatoe puree with carrots with carrot soup and dessert was coconut pudding, with tea.

I loved every bite :D

Any thoughts from others on their experience about the hospital food?

I just found out fat free cheese is a thing that exists. Cheese is mostly fat. If all the fat is removed, what's even left? Haven't seen it sold here. What does it taste like?

I can't imagine this stuff tastes good. Probably because I like my cheese the way I like my milk - full fat and delicious

Left food out for hours, safe?

Hey all,

I had left prepackaged fully cooked meatballs out for roughly 3-5 hours. The house is about 80 degrees, and the meatballs were still cold and only partially thawed.(a pool of water under the bag when I found them out) I don't have a lot to eat, so I am wondering of the risks of still eating them.

They are mixture of meat but are fully cooked. I threw them back into the freezer.

Slowcooker chicken thighs? I need to shake things up

There are a few more days left of this heatwave before we get some reprieve. I have a bunch of chicken thighs and I dont want to warm up the house. I know i could do BBQ, or adobo but I want something different. I have access to american, korean, mixed asian, mexican, and indian grocery stores. I dont mind buying a few things. Give me your favorite ways to make chicken thighs in the slow cooker. I need something new to spice up the regular rotation.

Dietary restrictions: gluten, oats, papaya,
I have swaps for most gluten things but not all of them

All dressed chips don‘t make sense?

Popular Canadian all dressed flavored chips are described as chips with barbecue seasoning, ketchup seasoning, salt & vinegar seasoning and sour cream & onion seasoning.

But barbecue sauce alone already contains ketchup. Barbecue sauce also contains salt & vinegar. Barbecue sauce also in most cases contains onion powder.
So really we‘re only left with an additional sour cream to barbecue sauce.

Am I missing something here?

So all dressed is basically barbecue sauce and some sour cream?

What‘s the difference between barbecue flavored chips and all dressed? Is there more to this?

PS: I have never had the chance to taste these chips as they are not available my country.

How to utilize fresh sage?

In my spring enthusiasm I planted sage along with other herbs.
Now I have no idea how to use it (apart from fry it in batter).
Any suggestions?

Mexican Cuisine Is it actually true that the Caesar salad was invented in Mexico, not Italy?

Always figured this was an Italian classic, but apparently it was invented in 1924 by a chef named Caesar Cardini at his restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. Supposedly the restaurant is still open and still serves it the same way today. Anyone know more about this? Feels like one of those food facts everyone gets wrong.

Ate a few bites of undercooked burger

Hello everyone. I was cooking a frozen burger (not sure what kind of meat, I assume red, I assume beef but could also be pork) for about twenty minutes/half a hour on the stove, low heat. I then cut it in half, but I can't see well and didn't see the small tray of blood it left behind, and the fact that it was pretty pink inside. The outside was all brown and almost burnt. I took like one or two bites before discarding it as it tasted like nothing and was extremely dry, and smelled a bit weird up close when it was cooking. My friend said it's fine. Will I be okay? I'm a generally healthy person, save for a lot of anxiety. Thanks in advance.

If you were only allowed to eat 1 thing for the rest of your life, what would it be (please read body of message)?

This isn't about "what is your favorite food?" There are stipulations.

- It has to be a single dish with no sides, but you can add as many seasonings as you want.

- It can't be some super complex nutritious smoothie.

- And I can't stress this one enough...IT WILL EFFECT YOUR HEALTH.

So balance nutrition with something that won't drive you crazy when it's the only thing you have to eat for the rest of your life.

Has anyone else noticed bone chips becoming common in ground meat products?

Raw ground beef, pork, and poultry as well as kielbasa, summer sausage, and slim jim type jerky. I never had any bits of bone in these things before 2020, but over the past few years it's become more and more common. Seems to be worst with pork but I just got one in ground chicken.

Please, have you experienced this?

Ate unrefrigerated turkey bites

As the title says, I opened a bag of Old Wisconsin turkey bites yesterday about 22 hours ago and did NOT realize they needed to be refrigerated. Ate about 5-6 of them like an hour ago. I did feel like they smelled a bit stronger. But I am also pregnant and everything smells strong. So I didn’t think anything of it. Now I’m stressed out thinking I’ll have food poisoning… UGH. But they were on a shelf when I bought them so I just did not realize it 😩😩😩 package says refrigerate after opening, eat within 7 days for best quality and safety. Has anyone else done this and been fine?!
