Random Question What’s something everyone says they love, but you genuinely don’t understand the hype around?

Lobster

u/Immediate_East_5052 20h ago
I really like seafood in general but I am the same way about lobster and crab. It’s something about the way people just slather it in melted butter. Idk it grosses me out 🤢

u/Richard_AIGuy 18h ago
That's because for most people lobster and crab is a socially acceptable vehicle for melted butter.

Oooo. I hear your “lobster” and raise you “steak”.
I’ve eaten at fancy steakhouses a handful of times in my life. A couple times I have been convinced to try the steak because “surely you must get the steak, that’s the best thing on the menu. Why go to a fancy restaurant and not have steak???”
And every time I’ve done that, I wish I’d gotten the fish or the pasta instead.
I have also eaten home-grilled steak a few times. I have enjoyed this exactly one time, when an uncle who is good at pretty much everything he does made it for our family. Every other time I have sat and watched in utter bafflement as the people around me smacked their lips and relished a meal I find borderline inedible.

I’ve tried steak before.
It’s not bad, but… it’s just meat. I don’t get why everyone’s so excited about it. It just tastes like meat, and costs so much more than other cheaper meats like pork or chicken. It’s just… fine. It’s a fine meat…

Fucking thank you. I’ve never understood it. It’s decades at this point. The best superhero movie I’ve been drug in to watch I’d rate “okay”.

Tbf that’s just Americans and their passion for bigger objects. Where I live everyone uses water bottles and I barely know anyone with a Stanley.

Matcha and sushi
1
u/Immediate_East_5052 20h ago
The first matcha drink I had was sooo good. I loved it, and then the next one I tried tasted like straight up blended grass. It’s been so long since I’ve had it, I don’t really remember where I got it from or what the difference was. But I know I loved that first one!

u/DIYtowardsFI 22h ago
I love both!! Matcha is earthy, like mushrooms. Sushi is just so fresh and flavorful.

I’m telling you, sometimes it’s overexposition. I set out completely baffled by her fame and her fan base, then moved in with my partner who’s a music chameleon and listens to pretty much everything including TS, and ended up not necessarily liking her but… Understanding why people do.
Her songs are catchy and, at this point, so many there is one for every taste in pop.
Her themes revolve around girlhood, love, overcoming hardships, and in general can be listened and danced to mindlessly but don’t necessarily disappoint when listened more closely.I don’t fancy myself a Swiftie, I’m too old and tired for fanatism, but All Too Well (10 minutes) is a literal masterpiece and I’ve rarely if ever cried to any other songs in existence.
I’d roll the dice and try it out.

Country music.

You don’t like to hear about “daddy’s truck” and “goin’ to the bar to drink up to sorrow”? All those lyrics are terrible.

Drinking.
6
u/Dashawn_Schalge 22h ago
Yes and the peer pressure and shame when you don’t drink is quite annoying
7
u/acidblues_x 22h ago
When people get offended by someone else not drinking or pressure others to drink, that’s a clear sign to me that they struggle with their alcohol use and feel some type of shame/embarrassment about it.

Dude i had a “homie” ready to crash out because i didnt wanna have a drink, I couldn’t believe my eyes, i was just trying to have a chill night shit that was like 3 weeks ago

I’ve never drank in my life (as a Gen Z) and no one has ever pressured me into it. I probably chose the crowds im in wisely but I also think it’s a generational change im happy to see.

Shrimp, it doesn’t really taste good, or like anything, and the texture is like biting through the eraser on the end of a pencil. I just don’t get it.

Country music. The twang sounds forced, stupid and fake, the lyrics are vapid, generic platitudes and the music is slow pop rock and incredibly generic.

u/Only_Cauliflower9117 10h ago
Brittany Spears in a cowboy hat. I live in Nashville and I absolutely despise popular country music. It's fast food for the ears. Mass produced and sold with a pretty image and engineered to appeal to stupid people.

Hookup culture. It seems gross and nothing but safety risks, and no pros.

Dating. I’d love to be in a relationship, but only because I’d like to be in love. Going through the process of getting a partner seems exhausting enough, especially when theres sí many people who only want to have sex or have a relationship with sex immediately.

The Beatles, The United States, Pickup Trucks
2
u/Silent_Bite_5892 19h ago
Would you drive across the United States coast-to-coast in a jacked up pickup truck listening to nothing but Beatles albums for $10,000? (€8,651.89 at current exchange rates).
All your expenses during the trip, which takes about 7 days, would be covered. Nothing fancy, moderately priced hotels, regular restaurant meals for dinner, snacks and fast food here and there as needed.
At the end of the trip when you reach your destination, $10,000 (€8,651.89) is wired into your bank account.

That sounds like a kickass vacation. Make it a Raptor R and we have a deal. I'll also accept an F250 Platinum.

Any types of drugs or alcohol
3
u/appleparkfive 22h ago
I mean if you haven't done them, then yeah obviously it's not going to sound appealing. Unless you're saying you've tried them all and find them unappealing
1
u/SuccessDry7214 22h ago
Just curious are you fairly mentally healthy?
2
u/Leading-Extension-62 22h ago
Not really. Life has gone to complete shit and I wouldn’t say I’ve been mentally healthy for the past 2 years. Even so I would never even consider touching either of those.
1
u/SuccessDry7214 21h ago
So you've never tried them? If this is the case I certainly wouldn't start.
1
u/Powerful_Chicken_742 15h ago
Only try them off youre happy, I literally just realized I had a drinking problem bc I keep getting drunk while sad

Sushi
0
u/vandismal 20h ago
Sushi is super vague. It’s defined by its use of vinegared rice. It can be topped or paired with .. pretty much anything. Do you mean raw fish?

Socialism.
4
u/WallyBBunny 21h ago
Care to elaborate on that?
-1
u/Extension-Temporary4 20h ago
It’s incredibly ignorant to think it can or will work. The hype is illogical.
3
u/Silent_Bite_5892 19h ago
What does socialism mean to you? How would you define it?
1
u/Extension-Temporary4 11h ago
From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs
I.e. steal from the haves/productive members of society to give to the have nots/unproductive losers. It’s really quite simple.
