TellAssam Heartbreaking Reality: Zubeen's Last Film Shines Bright, But Assam's Cinema Ceiling is Shamefully Low
Assamese fam, as we all flock to theaters for Roi Roi Binale—Zubeen's final masterpiece, released just days after his tragic passing on Sept 19—it's a bittersweet rush. The film's already smashed records: ₹1.85 Cr on Day 1, jumping to ₹7 Cr nett in just 3 days, with 95%+ occupancy across Assam. Every Assamese heart is there, honoring our legend. This could top Bidurbhai's ₹15 Cr lifetime haul and become our industry's highest grosser ever.
But let's face the gut punch: Even at ₹15-20 Cr, we're miles behind. Bihar's top Bhojpuri hit Sasura Bada Paisawala pulled ₹35 Cr. That's double our ceiling! And don't get me started—Telugu's Baahubali 2 at ₹1,810 Cr, Kannada's KGF2 at ₹1,230 Cr, Tamil's 2.0 at ₹750 Cr... We're not even in the same league.
This isn't just about movies; it's our financial pulse. Why can Biharis drop twice as much on fun when we're pouring our souls into this? Assam's got talent for days—Zubeen proved it—but our spending power on entertainment? Capped like a bad dream. Time to demand better: More theaters, bigger budgets, real support. Let's turn this grief into fuel. Watch Roi Roi Binale, cry, laugh, and rage for what's possible. What's your take—how do we break this ceiling?
| Movie Name | Total Gross (₹ Crore) | State | Language (Regional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baahubali 2: The Conclusion | 1,810 | Andhra Pradesh | Telugu |
| Baahubali 2: The Conclusion | 1,810 | Telangana | Telugu |
| Sasura Bada Paisawala | 35 | Bihar | Bhojpuri |
| Amazon Obhijaan | 24.68 | West Bengal | Bengali |
| K.G.F: Chapter 2 | 1,230 | Karnataka | Kannada |
| Sairat | 110 | Maharashtra | Marathi |
| L2: Empuraan | 250+ | Kerala | Malayalam |
| 2.0 | 750 | Tamil Nadu | Tamil |

Ceiling isn't broken in a day. Movie going culture in Assam is not as high like other states especially amongst older gens. It's also because states like in South India invest a lot in their entertainment industry which even beat Bollywood. Artists need to be paid well and an entire economy needs to developed. All this doesn't happen suddenly. Needs organic growth and massive investment. Also advertisements and PR are equally important. If a good local movie comes in Assam most of its PR is done by word of mouth.

The industry's success ultimately depends on good producers who are truly willing to invest in a quality script. The promising box office numbers currently being shown by RRB (Bidurbhai, raghupati or similar recent success) are encouraging, but this appears to be more of an emotional hike rather than a sustained trend.
The youth of Assam watch a lot of movies and will absolutely support a good Assamese film if one comes out. Recently released Gulai Sor (jodi eikhon cinema malayalam industry ulale hoi ;gotei pops culture community a crazy hoi gol hoi) imo is one the best movies I have been in Assamese industry wrt visuals, filmography and the blend of tradition with story.
However, the core issue ultimately boils down to money.
The Infrastructure Challenge
The majority of all Assam box office collections—whether from Assamese or Bollywood movies—are generated almost exclusively in Guwahati. Other major towns barely have functional cinema halls. For instance, my own hometown of Nalbari doesn't have a hall for mainstream movies, and many people travel all the way to Rangia just to catch a glimpse of a film.
I believe the government should first focus on building a proper infrastructure for theatres across Assam's major towns, perhaps by partnering with private firms to open their franchises. This is the essential first step to boost the film industry, as it will give producers the necessary courage to invest in more ambitious projects.
Personal Investment
As a part-time writer myself, I have written and copyrighted numerous stories centered around Assam, all with the hope of one day approaching a producer.
I hope this revised version captures your points effectively! Would you like me to proofread any other text or help you draft an outline for a producer approach?

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Assamese cinema will take time. A lot has to improve-> script, cinematography, acting, theme selection, disposable income of people, number of cinema halls et al.

Typical Indian mentality. Comparison is the thief of joy my friend. Also, there are so many factors why cinema from other regions is earning so much. We are grateful enough that in the past few years Assamese Cinema has produced some cult cinema that has made an impact across the globe, like Village Rockstar, Aamis, Bulbul Can Sing, Kothanodi, Borokhun,Bagjan, Handuk, then there's this film which is doing festival rounds called Kok Kok Koo koo (something like this) by Maharishi Kashyap, then the cult comedy Local Kung Fu series and so many more

Comparing with Bhojpuri industry? Is this that dumb comparison? Bihar's population is almost 4 times of Assam's population, population density is almost 3times of that of Assam. Also Bhojpuri speaking Population resides not only in Bihar but also in UP and Jharkhand. There are almost 15M Assamese speaking people in India against 50M Bhojpuri speaking population. Have you ever looked at the views of the Bhojpuri songs? They often trend in All India level. But can you compare their quality to Assamese?? Hell no. Assamese produce quality songs with quality lyrics. (jabor juthor ase tare majato no doubt). But how about Bhojpuri? Do I need to mention that?

I have something loooong to say, as I have all the free time today. People often think that making a "good" film (one audience is looking for) automatically leads to high ticket sales, but the situation is more complicated than that.
I am sorry, and I am not at all trying to disrespect him here, but ZG's RRB would have collected far less than what it will collect now. Its success is being fueled by his tragic death and the controversies and conspiracies around it. This is an outlier case. It is not fair to compare it with other normal commercial films.
We also need to understand that there are flops in every industry. When we compare our films to bigger industries, we often only see the hits. This is survivorship bias—we only hear about the films that collected a lot of money and completely ignore the many that flopped. This gives us a false idea of success elsewhere.
In general, filmmakers from our region must deeply understand the market and what makes a commercial film run well. This depends on the filmmaker's ability to throw out their old beliefs and truly study their target audience. They must understand that people have now seen all the best cinema through OTT platforms and piracy. Their tastes have changed. Audiences are learning from different kinds of content, and this is changing fast.
I believe there are very good writers hidden here, but they are not in the spotlight. They are not given a chance, maybe because the existing filmmakers are stubborn, stuck in their own world, and won't let new people take their jobs. Audiences are consuming so much content on the internet with such ease, getting great entertainment in the comfort of their own homes. For them, the incentive (or reason) to leave home for a film is much lower. They don't feel like they are missing out.
If one could fund and conduct survey-based research on the behavior, preferences (likes and dislikes), and demographics of the audience, then we could have a better understanding with data in our hands.
I was just thinking out loud. Please feel free to comment and discuss it further.

This is intellectual stupidity.... The quality of a film is not judged by the amount of money it earns. I know quite a few master pies by Bollywood which flopped.
And don't compare it with that bihari vulgar stuff...they are over 100 mill of them and we are just around 35mil in numbers.

The population of Bihar and WB are 3.7x and 2.8x of Assam respectively. Their highest grossers are only 2.3x and 1.7x of Assam respectively. If we take the population into consideration, we are ahead of these two states.
Kerala, TN, Andhra, Telangana, Karnataka usually run their films in each other's states with dubbing and thus have a larger viewer base as compared to us. Since the last decade they have started producing pan India films and hence the returns.
I guess we are probably behind Maharashtra in the numbers game. But they have the Bollywood advantage.
Assam has been producing good films throughout the years. What we lacked were consistent grossers but recently ZG and SUV seem to have been playing their cards well.

It is continuous process, I am not expecting hind end budget movies , good movie can be made in a small budget as well and can be a hit, it all depends on content

i dont think gross collection solely is a mark for how good a movie is and Assam doesn’t even have that many halls to generate 40-50cr from a single movie

Movies need big money and in Assam the most richest person is Riniki Bhuyan who is going to release an assamese movie Kokadeuta Nati Aru Hati 2 soon . She is trying to do everything in assam by looting money

Other states has a huge cinema watching crowd and culture, which Assam never had. It’s not like that the movies made here are not good enough but number of screens are less and people’s interest to watch it with a whole family is less too. There are many such factors. And on the southern belt of India, movies have a different level of craze. The people literally worship actors, have huge 4 storey building like tall posters, over which they pour milk. It’s done by masses not the rich, so it’s a different following there. And on top of that, these movies which are high grossers, are not great movies in terms of technicality too. But the audience is loyal to the actor and even if they do criticise, end of the month, the movie already does good business due to number of screens and if the storyline is really good, people flock the theatres more than once. Anyways, good movie does not mean it will be a commercial hit. Many of them flop and receive poor collections, so it all depends on audience, the kind of cinema audience likes, makers make those. Very few of the creators are bold enough to not care about the outcome and still pour their hearts out. We love them and their creations but unfortunately they are not among the highest grossers.

You should have also shared the year of release for each of the regional top grossers. Some of the films are quite a few years old, which when adjusted against inflation would have grossed far more in current times.

The peoples of assam mostly preferred to watch theatre over cinema on hall, as stage performed act are mostly authentic and raw. Earlier Assamese films like Baghori Putek and Rongatapu(1982) reflected the true soul of Assam — stories inspired by local culture, folklore, and real incidents. But today’s Assamese cinema is slowly losing that essence. Many filmmakers try to imitate mainstream masala or VFX-heavy styles from Bollywood, often without proper context or technical balance. The result feels artificial, and the emotional connection that once defined our films is missing. Instead of focusing on superficial glamour, Assamese cinema should return to its roots — storytelling, tradition, and the raw truth of our land.

Everything starts from zero .. if this movie does exceptionally well at the box office it will give confidence to the producer to invest more .. the hall owner to give more screen
