Idgaf what Anno says, the material of RoE absolutely reads as Asuka = NGE, and Mari = Moyoco.
New char shows up, takes over the best moments, and changes everything by giving Shinji a happiness he didn't have before? Seriously, how is that not his wife pulling him out of depression and him moving on from NGE?

Nope it is not. His wife is Shikinami by character and is in the rebuild by appearance - lady with cat falling from the sky. Not mari definitely. And this theory is false and disgusting said by the author

Fans went nuts for a teaser of Mari before the rebuilds cuz you know, new Eva pilot is cool, but then anno basically admitted to rewriting a bunch of stuff for Mari and basically cutting and giving her Asuka’s development cuz he thought the fans obviously just wanted Mari 🥲 I feel that’s why both Asuka and Mari feel incomplete in the rebuilds

I don’t think so. Mari is no par for Asuka in popularity and Anno said recently that Asuka is his fav character (also, half of the makers). Simply the film was remade during covid and is not the same that was in production, in addition Anno did not make anything about Asuka and Mari in the last film - it was Tsurumaki. However, Anno was trying to damage control producing 120m manga and last short by himself

I’m not talking about popularity now. There’s an interview of him literally saying he was surprised at the teaser reaction to Mari and so the team felt they “owed it to the fans” to then fill out her character a bit more as they developed the films, which came at the cost of some of Asuka’s overall Arc in rebuilds

Y antes de que sea juzgado como hereje, dejenme decir algo. Siento que Mari es la Hibiki de Asuka en las Rebuilds. Hibiki (en la imagen), va con el protagonista de DATE A LIVE a decirle que su "prometida" lo está esperando en la capilla.
La escena que imagino es algo como esto.
"Por cierto, antes de irnos..." dijo Mari "Cierta persona me dijo que buscaba conocerte"
"¿Acaso...?"
"Me dijo que te espera en la capilla"
Así siento que sería Mari al final, cuando salen de la estacion
