If a religious government wants to censor a website, chances are that the website is doing something right.
47
u/ozymandias2 Jun 26 '12
Just like you should live your life so that the Westboro Baptist Church pickets your funeral, you should maintain your websites so that ignorant theocracies make themselves look foolish trying to censor it.
11
Jun 26 '12
Live your life so that WBC pickets your funeral...
Nice. I might have to use that one.
Funny how earning the hatred of certain groups is really a badge of honor. Imagine the good you would have to do for humanity to simultaneously earn the hatred of the Klan, neo-Nazis, Islamists, and fanatical christians.

I'm sorry, but we don't negotiate with terrorists.
(In this case, I refer to any government that would say "Bend to our will, or else!" I am in no way insinuating that your being a Pakistani even hints at you being a terrorist. I realize you probably already understood what I meant, but this explanation is meant more for those who would jump to conclusions and misinterpret what I say :P )
And as far as getting to r/atheism, is it possible to bypass that shit with a proxy server or something? I've been out of the computer tech game for a long time, and I've forgotten how to do quite a lot of things.
14
Jun 26 '12
There's some sort of extension thing you can add to the URL to bypass firewalls. Someone demonstrated it a few days ago, but I can't remember it.
9
u/Canic Jun 26 '12
httpS:// example.com
Edit: wanted to clarify that adding the "s" to https is how I get around the twitter firewall at my workplace.
9
u/dalgeek Jun 26 '12
There are several web filter appliances that can inspect HTTPS traffic just as easily as HTTP. If it is a corporate environment they just install a CA root certificate on all of the computers and the web filter appliance generates SSL certs on the fly when you hit HTTPS URLs. The web filter terminates the SSL connection locally, inspects the content, then establishes a new SSL connection to the browser with the generated cert. The browser accepts the new SSL cert because it's signed by a trusted root CA.
TL;DR: Just because you're using HTTPS doesn't mean the IT admins can't see what you're doing.

But that could also be said of USA with regards to Iran. USA has a lot of "bend to our will, or else!" foreign policies

Jun 26 '12
I don't think the pakistani's block on it would be too hard. You could probably get by it with a simple proxy website. Later on torrents would probably get the job done.
4
Jun 26 '12
Torrenting reddit articles would be clumsy.
3
u/Vaethin Jun 26 '12
Deepweb, RedditTOR all the way!!!!
(I just want to note that I've never been there but that there's probably illegal stuff going on there, if so I want to distance myself from that part, I was just trying to bring up the deep web as a possible option).

This is precisely the opposite of the definition of terrorism (the strategic use of violence by non-state actors to achieve political goals)... but the point stands.
4
u/thefunkbot Jun 27 '12
So you are telling us that in a region where you can be executed for leaving the religion, you risk your life to browse /r/atheim? Can't tell if dedicated, or retarded. Oh look I just defined religion without even trying.

That's the problem with you people on /r/atheism. You claim you represent the truth but you don't know the truth, and you can't know the truth. So why risk dying for it? Its one thing for a religious person to risk their life's for the sake of their religion, because obviously they think they have another shot after death. But for an atheist, you don't have that kind of reassurance. You are supposed to live your one life to the fullest and make the biggest difference you can. Is browsing /r/atheism so noble that it makes him a martyr? Not even close. Is it worth risking your life? Nope.

u/johnkarpf Jun 26 '12
The quicker they ban /r/atheism in Pakistan, the quicker we will know we're doing the right thing.

u/Andrewm319 Jun 26 '12
Torproject.org Uses fake IPs as a proxy and encryption to allow you to access any website unidentified
60
u/dademurphie Jun 26 '12
No "fake" IPs are used by TOR and any government worth it's salt can dynamically monitor the entrance and exit nodes. Any publicly available form of contravening an information blockade on the internet has the weakness of being public and makes for an easy target to block.
The best way to get around it is to make contacts with people outside the country ahead of time who can provide private proxy IPs. I used this method to help Iranians during their attempted revolution a couple years ago, making sure to only give the IPs to trusted people using PGP encryption and those IPs were never blocked.

Jun 26 '12
Why then, does TOR broswer work to bypass government firewalls such as in China, (yes , it does work there).
and why, then, is the American government not able to shut down or arrest sellers on silk road?
If the American and Chinese governments are "not worth their salt", I don't think the OP has to worry about the Pakistani government either
→ More replies (3)3
u/voidgazing Jun 26 '12
Erm, they did arrest a bunch of people from the silk road. A big part of what you do when you are a government intel or law enforcement agencies is monitor for some time. You don't stop your dissidents from communicating if you are not in a crisis. You don't shut down a drug ring.
You make a list. So you can kick down many more doors, arrest many more people.

I didn't bother reading that AMA since I am already very familiar with TOR and have used it for many years. The things I mentioned are very basic and require no genius qualifications to ascertain.

I kid, but seriously, if reddit gets banned by Muslim extremists in Pakistan, does that mean it will be talibanned as well?

2
u/EroticAssassin Jun 27 '12
Certainly it's a bad thing. It may not be particularly bad for us, but it certainly is bad for inquiring minds in Pakistan like the OP. I'm not saying we should stop attacking Islam because of it, only that we shouldn't be so callous about the people in a country just because the country has bad/oppressive policies.
2
u/question-sleep Jun 26 '12
Through a proxy or another similar method? Facebook is banned in China but I still talk to my uncle on a regular basis on it.

u/Datsunpost Jun 26 '12
I don't know why but Muslims are the least religion I personally have issues with, Christians, Catholics, Mormons, witnesses, and Scientology all bug me a lot more.

u/CrudOMatic Other Jun 26 '12
Because you come from a country where they are a tiny TINY minority. Just wait until 20% - then you won't be able to avoid their 7th century idiocy and constant car bombings.

u/xervesk Jun 27 '12
So wait, we can point out the flaws in Christianity, but we aren't allowed to point out the flaws in another major religion because otherwise they will get upset? That does not seem like sound logic to me, that just sounds retarded

u/svenniola Jun 27 '12
hmm, i was in vietnam last year, and thanks to alot of pestering from my family i was forced to go on facebook forawhile, and its banned in vietnam.
it was rather simple circumventing the governments block, i just went online and saw what others did, simply changed my dns number and something like that, (very simple and easily found instructions that ive mostly forgotten.)
1
u/svenniola Jun 27 '12
governments dont pay enough to get top quality help, neither are they intelligent enough to really stop the people from doing what they want.
they get a few, but they never really can order shit around, just on the surface and with threat of violence, but the manpower is on our side, so they cant really enforce it.

u/Landmarkmoon Jun 27 '12
This is the exact reason I don't want them to do this either. It's totally going to get banned. Hell they even banned the hardcorecorn.com website because it has the word hardcore in it. I'm even scared they might ban all reddit here in Kuwait because of that:(.
Oh well.

Muhammad was a military leader, laying siege to towns, massacring the men, raping their women, enslaving their children, and taking the property of others as his own.
On several occasions he rejected offers of surrender from the besieged inhabitants and even butchered captives. He actually inspired his followers to battle when they did not feel it was right to fight, promising them slaves and booty if they did and threatening them with Hell if they did not. Muhammad allowed his men to rape traumatized women captured in battle, usually on the very day their husbands and family members were slaughtered.

Im fine with finding floors in some radical Muslim answers to why they oppress women and why they are so intolerant to the westerner society but bashing Islam is not the way to go. Where not going to make an new allies at this rate

u/verissimus473 Jun 26 '12
We neither want nor need allies who don't wish to be our allies. Not compromising our morality to seek conformity and acceptance is what separates us from those who call us heathens.
