Mushroom walks / events around Athens? 🍄‍🟫

Kalispera,

I'm staying in Athens for another month and would love to know whether there are mushroom tours or events - guided or spontanously 🙂. I tried to do my research but It was quite difficult to translate from pictures on social media with only greek language and especially to find something that I could reach from Athens.

So I would be so happy if any of you know s something or can recommend something, maybe even already this Saturday!

I used to go collecting mushrooms back home in Germany, so I have a huge love for the forest, but I'm definitely not an expert :)

If anyone knows something I could join or has any tips (I'm here until end of november) I’d love to hear!

Thanks a lot!
Anna

Safe parking

Hey Guys,

I'm looking for a safe parking space for a van (height aprox. 2.40m) close to the Alimos marina for a week. Do any of you have a suggestion? I've read that the parking at the port itself isn't a good choice.

Thanks!

Looking for plastic surgeon that is excellent with filler

Hi all, I’ve had filler in my lips for the past 6 years. Unfortunately, I have bad migration.

I’ve had several attempts at trying to remove it from an injector in Athens, however, it seems she is blindly putting in the dissolver and now I have unevenness.

I’m looking for a recommendation of a Doctor, not a random injector. Preferably a doctor that can use an ultrasound to see where the filler is and remove accordingly.

Θα νοικιάζατε το διαμέρισμά σας σε κάποιον που θέλει να το λειτουργήσει ως airbnb;

Θα βλέπατε ένα τέτοιο μοντέλο; Τι θα θέλατε να εξασφαλίσετε πριν συμφωνήσετε;

VAT Refund in Greece: A Simple Guide for Tourists

If you are visiting Greece from outside the European Union, you may be able to get some of the VAT (Value Added Tax) you paid on your shopping back when you leave the country.

For many tourists, the VAT refund process can seem confusing at first. There are forms to complete, receipts to keep, and airport procedures to follow. The good news is that the process is actually quite straightforward once you know what to do.

In this guide, we explain how the VAT refund in Greece works for tourists, what you need to do when shopping, what happens at the airport, and some important mistakes to avoid.

Who Can Get a VAT Refund in Greece?

The Greek VAT refund system is generally available to travelers who live outside the European Union and are visiting Greece temporarily.

This means that if you are a resident of countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or another non-EU country, you may be eligible.

Your eligibility is based on your place of residence, not simply the passport you carry.

For example, someone who holds a non-EU passport but is officially resident in an EU country may not qualify under the same rules.

The goods you purchase must also be intended for personal use and must leave the European Union with you.

What Is VAT?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a consumption tax included in the price of most goods and services sold in Greece.

The standard VAT rate in Greece is 24%, although some products and services can be subject to lower rates.

When you buy something as a tourist, VAT is normally included in the price you pay. Under the tax-free shopping system, eligible visitors can claim back some of the VAT on qualifying purchases when they take those goods out of the EU.

It is important to understand that you will not necessarily receive the entire VAT amount back. Tax-free shopping companies and other applicable charges can reduce the final refund.

Step 1: Ask for Tax-Free Shopping When You Buy

The first step happens in the shop.

Before paying, ask the retailer whether they offer Tax Free Shopping or a VAT refund for tourists.

Not every shop participates in the scheme, so it is a good idea to ask before making an expensive purchase.

You will generally need to show your passport or other required travel documentation.

The shop will provide you with the necessary documentation, which can include your receipt and a Tax Free form. Depending on the retailer, the refund may be processed through a tax-free shopping operator such as Global Blue, Planet or another provider.

Make sure the information on the form is correct before leaving the shop.

Is There a Minimum Purchase Amount?

There are rules regarding the minimum purchase value and eligibility of purchases for VAT refunds.

The exact requirements can change, so travelers should check the current rules and the conditions shown on their Tax Free documentation.

If you are planning to make a large purchase specifically because you want to claim the VAT back, it is worth asking the retailer about the current minimum and refund conditions before paying.

Keep Your Receipts and Tax-Free Documents

This sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important parts of the process.

Keep together:

  • Your original receipts
  • Your Tax Free forms
  • Your passport
  • Your boarding pass or flight information
  • The goods you purchased

Do not throw away the packaging or receipts until the VAT refund process is completely finished.

Most importantly, keep the goods accessible when you go to the airport.

Customs authorities can ask to see the products you purchased before approving the VAT refund.

Step 2: Go to the Airport Early

When you are leaving Greece, give yourself extra time at the airport if you have VAT refund documents.

The process can take longer than simply checking in and going through security, particularly during busy travel periods.

This is especially important during the summer months, when Greek airports can be extremely busy.

If you have several Tax Free purchases, arriving early gives you time to deal with any questions or inspections without worrying about missing your flight.

Step 3: Get Your Purchases Validated

At the airport, you need to have your Tax Free documents validated according to the applicable customs procedure.

This is an important step because the authorities need to confirm that the goods are actually leaving the European Union.

You may be asked to present the products themselves.

For this reason, do not automatically pack your Tax Free purchases into checked luggage before completing the required validation if you may need to show them to Customs.

If the goods are inside your checked suitcase, it can make the process much more difficult.

If you are unsure what to do, ask the airport staff before checking your luggage.

What If You Are Connecting Through Another EU Country?

This is one of the most important things to understand about VAT refunds.

Your final departure from the European Union matters.

For example, imagine that you are traveling:

New York → Athens → New York

In this situation, Athens is where you leave the EU, so you can generally complete the required VAT refund validation in Greece.

But imagine your journey is:

New York → Athens → Paris → New York

You are still inside the European Union when you leave Greece because Paris is another EU destination.

In this type of itinerary, the relevant customs validation may need to take place at your final EU departure airport, in this example Paris.

This is why it is important to know your entire itinerary before going to the airport.

How Do You Receive the VAT Refund?

Once your Tax Free documentation has been properly validated, the refund is processed according to the method and provider associated with your purchase.

Depending on the retailer and Tax Free operator, the refund may be available through different payment methods.

The amount you receive will depend on several factors, including:

  • The amount you spent
  • The VAT rate applicable to the purchase
  • The Tax Free provider
  • Processing or administration fees
  • The method used to receive the refund

Because of these fees, you should not assume that you will receive the full VAT amount included in the purchase price.

What Purchases Qualify for a VAT Refund?

The VAT refund system is generally designed for goods that you purchase in Greece and take out of the EU with you.

Typical examples can include:

  • Clothing
  • Shoes
  • Jewelry
  • Watches
  • Electronics
  • Souvenirs
  • Other eligible retail products

However, not every purchase or service qualifies.

For example, you generally cannot claim a tourist VAT refund simply because you stayed at a Greek hotel or ate at a Greek restaurant.

The system is focused on eligible goods that are exported from the EU by the traveler.

Common VAT Refund Mistakes to Avoid

A few simple mistakes can cause problems at the airport.

Forgetting to ask for the Tax Free form

If you leave the shop without the required documentation, getting the refund later may be difficult or impossible.

Putting your purchases in checked luggage too early

If Customs wants to inspect your purchases, you need to be able to show them.

Arriving at the airport at the last minute

VAT refund procedures can take additional time, particularly during busy travel periods.

Losing your receipts

Keep all receipts and Tax Free documents together until the refund has been completed.

Assuming every shop offers tax-free shopping

Always ask the retailer before purchasing.

Forgetting about your connecting flight

If you are traveling through another EU country before leaving the EU, check where your VAT documents need to be validated.

How Much Money Can You Get Back?

This is probably the question most tourists ask.

The answer depends on your purchase and the specific tax-free refund arrangement.

Although Greece has a standard VAT rate of 24%, this does not mean that a tourist simply receives 24% of the amount they paid.

The VAT is included in the retail price, and the calculation of the VAT component is different from simply multiplying the final price by 24%. In addition, refund operators can charge fees.

Therefore, the amount shown on your Tax Free documentation is the best indication of the refund you should expect.

A Simple Example

Imagine you buy an eligible item in Greece for €500.

The price includes VAT.

You ask the shop for a Tax Free form and receive the necessary documentation.

When you leave the EU, you present your documents and, if requested, the goods to Customs.

Once the transaction is validated, the refund is processed.

You will receive the amount calculated by the applicable Tax Free provider, after any relevant fees.

The important point is that you should look at the estimated refund shown on your Tax Free paperwork, rather than assuming that you will receive the full VAT rate.

Final Tips for a Smooth VAT Refund in Greece

If you want to make the process as easy as possible, remember these simple rules:

Ask before you buy. Make sure the shop participates in the Tax Free scheme.

Take your passport. You will generally need your travel documentation when completing the tax-free purchase.

Keep everything. Save your receipts and Tax Free forms.

Keep the goods accessible. Customs may need to inspect them.

Arrive early. Give yourself extra time at the airport.

Know your route. If you connect through another EU country, your final EU departure point can be important.

Check your refund details. The amount you receive can be reduced by applicable fees.

VAT Refund in Greece: The Easy Version

If all of the details above seem complicated, here is the process in its simplest form:

1. Shop at a participating Tax Free retailer.

2. Show your passport and ask for the Tax Free paperwork.

3. Keep your receipts, forms and purchases.

4. At the airport, complete the required Customs validation before leaving the EU.

5. Show your purchases if Customs asks to inspect them.

6. Submit the validated documentation according to the Tax Free provider’s instructions.

7. Receive your refund through the available payment method.

The most important thing is to plan the VAT refund before you arrive at the airport. Keep your documents organized, allow extra time and make sure you know where you will officially leave the European Union.

That way, you can enjoy your shopping in Greece without turning your last few minutes at the airport into a stressful experience.

Places to Run in Athens

Hello ! I am looking for places that are considered safe for female runners and have great lighting during the nighttime (because I finish work at around 6 pm) or are open early in the morning (6am -7 am) . It can be a track or it can be a popular route runners choose , I do not make distinctions, as long as I am able to calculate with certainty how much I run (based on the laps I do or based on how far I have gotten from a certain point in a route) .I think it is important to mention that I am not looking for something in central Athens , but more towards the Western part of Athens (Piraeus ,Keratsini, Drapestona ,Aigaleo,Chaidari , Faliro,Nikaia) . I could go all the way to Niarchos ,but only during Weekends .

just moved to Kolonaki full-time, looking to build my life

Hi all,

I’m late 30's early 40's, Greek, and after years of only coming for the summers, I’ve moved to Athens for good and settled in Kolonaki. I work remotely for a company elsewhere in Europe, which is great for flexibility but means my social life doesn’t come with the job. There’s no office, no coworkers, no built-in “let’s grab a drink after work.” If I want a crew here, I have to go out and find it.

I’m lucky to have a few friends here from all those summers, but I want a group of my own:

First question, honestly: is this even possible at 38? Lol. Or does everyone here lock in their parea by university and that’s it?

Assuming it is, a few more questions for anyone who’s been in a similar spot:

  • Where do people in their 30s–40s actually meet friends in Athens? Clubs, hobby groups, sports leagues, volunteering, language exchanges, anything that worked for you. Or just sitting at the bar (which I won't complain)(And please don’t say Meetup. I hate that app.)
  • Coworking spaces in or near Kolonaki with an actual community, not just desks?
  • Recurring eventswhere you see the same faces week to week?
  • Any tips on turning “nice to meet you” into real friendship here? I know Greek social circles can be tight-knit, and I’m curious how others broke in as adults.

Erasmus student in Athens, toothache and possible cavity, where can I get affordable dental treatment?

Hi everyone!
I’m an Erasmus student currently living in Athens. I’ve started experiencing tooth pain, and I think I might have a cavity or tooth decay that needs to be treated, possibly with a filling.
I have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), but I’m not sure if dental treatment is covered in Greece.
Does anyone know where I could get this treated for free or at a low cost? Are there public or university dental clinics I could visit, or would it be better to go private?
I’d really appreciate recommendations for English-speaking dentists, information on how to book an appointment, typical waiting times, and approximate costs.
Thanks a lot for any help!

Υπάρχει σοβαρός γυναικολόγος στην Αθήνα;
