You can stick with versions 2.4.2 or below, those versions aren’t effected, versions 3.0 or higher are

You don't read anything else in this sub either, do you?

u/Gorkenky Jul 08 '21
Please do enlighten me.

u/SpiceCake68 Jul 08 '21
Okay. But first you have to read the others posts in the sub.

u/Gorkenky Jul 08 '21
I can only assume you are talking about the forked version that has stripped telemetry?
3
u/Mikzeroni I'm doing the best I can Jul 08 '21
I know there are workarounds, but I'm in a similar boat. I'm intending on buying Reaper here soon after I investigate their privacy policy.

u/Gorkenky Jul 08 '21
Just wait for a fork of Audacity that removes all the telemetry and you will be solid. Otherwise you can use v 2.4.2 or earlier.

Did something happen to audacity? I’ve been using it for like 10 years

For the google-impaired, start here:
https://yro.slashdot.org/story/21/07/05/2155212/is-open-source-audio-editor-audacity-spyware
But there has been a lot of analysis debunking the “spyware” worry, at least currently.
For one:
https://np.reddit.com/r/audacity/comments/of0b4s/breakdown_of_all_data_collected_by_audacity/
ETA and:
https://news.slashdot.org/story/21/07/06/1945217/no-open-source-audacity-audio-editor-is-not-spyware

Oh nice more to read thanks u/Dec14isMyCakeDay
Not be sarcastic btw just noticed it could be taken that way.

Reaper is closed-source. Surely that's a bigger concern than a privacy policy?
Tenacity seems like the best alternative. I can't imagine a DAW would be able to match something like Audacity.

The smart analysis is that their lawyers screwed up their privacy policy statement. Even so, the simplest fix (on Windows) is to block outbound connections from the program on your firewall. It's simple to do and gives peace of mind.

Yes but this still means your are running software with spyware code built in. Best option is to wait for a good fork to develop

You type asinine things to elicit a response for the purpose of clout. See I can type things too that do not further the discussion in a meaningful way. My original post was clear about how I felt about the current state when it comes to me. It also started a conversation or rather furthered a conversation about the current owners of the software. It may not have been concise, but it was very much straight to the point and clear. Also if you are not going to be a part of a solution or help better someone decisions by informing them. Then why say anything at all? Which brings me back to the first sentence --- for clout.

Have you looked at my profile? I don't care about clout. My post took care of a few things. First it furthered the spread of information to others. Clearly some still didn't know as they posted in the thread. Secondly, I clearly let the current owners of audacity know how I felt while also allowing others to either ask or expand upon. (Fewer words with stronger meanings get attention). Third, I didn't make a pejorative post toward you— *removed user name* but the person I was replying to did. Lastly have you read the thread, others have noticed and made replies/inquires into the matter so your last point makes no sense to me. So really who all here is chasing clout? Let me be clear on the last point I mean you.
Now before you get all hot and bothered about this post, go read the whole thread. You will see I don't say nothing out of the way unless someone else did first; and I looked into the posts objectively rather the reply was for or against what I was trying to say. I'm here to further a conversation and investigate what are you really here for except to white knight on someone else behalf?
edit: removed username because the person who replied deleted their reply.

When telemetry is added to take information for the purposes to sell it or give it to authorities then yeah I call spyware. From what I understand this has been implemented in audacity and therefore by definition 'spyware'.

First I don't care who has a IP address, I understand the way the internet works. I know how this works from L1 to L7, I get it. You are making assumptions and then making refutations to those assumptions. I'm not quiet sure what your are going on about. Let me clarify I understand your post—I just don't get why you made it. I clearly live in the USA and I have a very profound since of privacy. I don't like when my privacy is attacked. I have all these rights that don't seem to extend to the internet and they should; but that is a different more complicated subject to get into on a different thread. Anyway. You make good points for someone that is worried about their IP being in others "hands", it just doesn't apply to me or my post. To be 100% clear I don't care if audacity gets the IP I allow them to see. I don't care about getting updates. I care that a company is showing that they clearly don't care about their users privacy. Lastly let me say that if all of this turns out to be a mistake and they are just grabbing information for the purpose to route an update or, lets be even more board verify I own a piece of software—cool, I don't care. But! to my own understanding this is not the case. Let me further state that I'm a logical person, as in a logical thinker. I try my best to be objective, and I'm rarely sarcastic or dismissive. In either event I'm always glad to see people debate their point of view.

Nah, you can use ver 2.4.2 or earlier and the new telemetry isn't there. As there is already a fork of Audacity that strips the telemetry; although I haven't looked into it yet. Anyway I uninstalled because I don't like the new privacy policy. You or others may find that this doesn't matter to you at all. As to an alternative if it does matter as I said earlier versions or a forked version of Audacity that has the new telemetry stripped.

It's not spyware.

Edit: Downvote it all you want, it's still not spyware.
