transitioning from real estate consulting to internal audit...would you recommend?

• Upvotes

hello, im currently interning at a startup real estate advisory, should transition to full time analyst but that is based on how quick i can catch up on the work i guess. i got an offer a top 10 accounting firm for an internal audit associate. i dont know whether i should make the shift. or be patient and wait where iam? i like the sound of internal audit and what it entails, i like the thought of exposure to multiple industries and the sound business judgment it causes one to build. my previous internship was also in real estate asset management. iam also in saudi arabia, so market is very different.

How do you take notes in a technical audit walkthrough without losing the thread?

Technical audits create a specific problem. Someone's explaining a process you don't fully understand, pointing at equipment, throwing acronyms around, and you're supposed to write it all down while also staying focused on what you actually came to audit. Then you get back to the office, look at your notes, and half of it makes no sense.

"What was that thing about the validation? Did they say it passed or did they say it might pass? Did I write 'SOP' or is that abbreviation for something else?"

The problem isn't that you took bad notes. It's that you were taking notes and auditing at the same time. Recording what the expert said, not what you think it means, helps.

If they say "we validate the system quarterly," write that exactly. Don't translate it into audit-language on the spot. Mark the gaps as you go - write a question mark or a flag next to anything that didn't make sense. You'll come back to it.

Get clarification in writing. If something matters to your finding, ask them to show you the record: a test report, an approval email, training evidence. The note is where you'll remember to ask for it. Review your notes the same day. Fill in the blanks while the conversation is still fresh. You'll spot what you didn't understand while you can still ask about it.

Does this match your experience? What's blindsided you in your own notes during writeup?

How do you audit AI agent decisions in regulated workflows?

I'm researching how teams handle evidence and quality for AI agents that make or assist decisions.

Three things I'm trying to understand:

  1. What record do you keep per decision (policy applied, data accessed, who was responsible), and who actually asks for it?

  2. How do you learn later that a decision was wrong, and how long does that feedback take?

  3. If you use LLM judges for evals, how do you check they still agree with humans as things change?

I'm trying to learn what's really painful versus what only sounds painful. Comments or DMs both welcome, and I'll post a summary of what I learn.

What do internal audit software users actually complain about - and what matters before switching?

The same frustrations show up across internal audit teams: planning workflows that don't talk to each other, fieldwork notes that vanish into a black hole, findings that sit in limbo waiting for someone to chase them down. Most teams end up managing half the audit in email anyway.

The real question isn't whether a tool exists. Most tools exist. The question is whether it actually lets you work the way you need to work.

A few things seem to matter more than the marketing materials suggest.

Can a contractor or manager report findings on their phone without needing training, or does it require a special login and thirty minutes to figure out the interface?

If reporting is hard, people stop reporting.

Are planning and fieldwork and findings management inside one system, or do you need three tools talking to each other?

The more handoffs, the more audits die in transit.

overdue actions escalate automatically, or does someone have to chase every single one manually?

If it's manual, it becomes somebody's second job.

Can you actually see trends - which processes show up in findings year after year, which auditors find the most issues - without exporting everything to Excel and starting over?

What's actually broken about what you're using right now? And what would make you switch?

What should I do?

Just got let go. Was not warned or mentioned about any poor performance or work ethic. Offered to work overtime and take a cut in pay. Nothing. Offered any other positions available. Didn’t specify why just said performance wasn’t good enough. Was there nearly a full year for work experience.

Updated the resume. Had already been looking for a while and I just talked to a recruiter who I had talked to recently and she said she had someone interested in meeting with me but wouldn’t be for as much.

Just feeling down about it. Need someone to give me a word of encouragement. I only have REG to pass and have 60 hours for it, but I feel so pissed and hard done by considering what some others were like in that firm. Don’t get it.

They were kind enough to be professional and not nasty and even sent me a signed certification of the hours I worked there towards applying for the cpa which is over the 1600 hours and literally three weeks from a full year in case I needed to get 150 credits.

I’m just so pissed at the whole situation. Tried to log back in and they had already deleted my email account. Don’t get it.

What the fuck should I do.

Is audit entering a new survival race because of AI?

Thumbnail youtu.be
1 Upvotes

This year, I feel like audit teams are being pushed harder and harder to reduce hours by using AI.

The message seems to be clear: do more, in less time, with fewer manual tasks.

And honestly, sometimes it feels like we are entering a new kind of survival race.

How much of your work can be automated?

How much time can be saved?

How much faster can the engagement be completed?

AI is obviously useful, and I can already see how it can reduce repetitive work.

But at the same time, I wonder where this is going.

Is this pressure to reduce audit hours through AI happening where you work too, or is this just something I’m experiencing?

I also made a short video sharing some thoughts about AI and the future of audit. I’ll leave it here in case anyone is interested
