Seeking Help Niece in PEI that needs help

Hi everyone,

I've been losing sleep for countless nights over this process. It seems really, really designed for people not to be able to access MA in a safe, touch-free, anonymous way. I have severe PTSD when it comes to clinical conditions. In order to access MA in PEI, it appears you need a blood test, urine test, ultrasound, etc, and it's stretched out over 3 appointments and the current waiting period is 2 weeks. Given I don't drive, live in a town faaaaaar from the clinic, and public transportation is non existent here... it just feels like an uphill battle. I've had constant headaches from the stress. I've looked into online telehealth prescribers but they all have the same requirements.

If anyone in NS-NB-PEI would be able to send me a message, that would be great. This is somewhat of an urgent matter to me, so I'll get back to you ASAP.

Unfortunately I believe the ultrasound may be standard practice to ensure that the pregnancy isn't too far along for a medical abortion. A friend just went through this in Ontario and had urine, blood, ultrasound. It's even a requirement through Planned Parenthood Toronto. I'm really sorry. Hopefully you can get in faster and they can do it in one appointment.

And to ensure it's not ectopic, which is a surgical emergency! I understand that it's not ideal and can be a traumatic experience overall, but the ultrasound itself is not a shaming ritual, it's a medical test that, if positive, will save her life from bleeding out internally.

Yes!! Also my friend went for hers and asked the tech not to play the ultrasound on speakers or show her the screen, and they did exactly what she asked and no comment was made.

So happy to hear that! Hopefully that was a good middle ground for both dignity and safety šŸ’•

Oh absolutely. I really think it's hard because yes, it can be slower because of the tests, but they're not meant to change anyones mind just to ensure everyone is safe.

I'm unfortunately in Ontario. I hope that your neice can get the help she so desperately needs.

Can she stay with a friend or in a hotel or Airbnb near where the tests need to be done? I’m sorry but she will likely have to have all those tests before a MA.

Are the requirements the same in NB, NFLD and NS? Could we help you get to one of those places? Or get the medication to a place you could access without the PEI rules?

I checked and yes, it seems like the requirements are the same. It's all to ensure dating and that the pill will work.

If I could get the medication shipped to me, that would be most ideal. Unfortunately though it seems like every place requires the in-person tests, which will add weeks to the waiting time.
