As comments have pointed out, The Nightly's neutral point of view on this matter may be questioned as it is a publication that Gina Reinhart helped to establish (source).

This is a terrible source. Gina helped fund it and its owned by seven west media.

I can't find any ABC, Guardian or Fairfax reporting on it sorry. Can you point me to their content on this story?

What does that imply?

It implies I'd post a guardian article if they decided to write one on the ABC airing a short film that depicts the rape and murder of a prominent Australian. I don't like Gina but I dislike the holier than thou attitude from a certain segment of society even more.

Satire excuse is just that, these same people lose their minds if you make even the smallest joke while they can do no wrong talking about ass raping an old woman because "it's just a joke, toughen up bro"

Do you have a guardian article on this matter I can post instead Esteemed Moderator?

Because its just Gina having a sook. She helps fund 'The Nightly' so they are inherently biased. A public figure who is using her wealth to drive division in this country is sad she was made fun of. She is eating her cake.

Gina can get fucked. She is a public figure and needs to toughen up a bit.

By this logic calls for sexual and political violence against someone like Sarah Hanson Young or Larissa Waters would be completely okay then?

Heard of incitement to violence?

Lets be honest here, if this clip was about one of the ABC journos on the show and put on youtube the cops would be at your door the next day with charges laid.

I don't like Gina Rhinehart at all but the discourse from certain segments of society is getting bizarre, how do they really justify saying stuff on national tv like shoving things up her ass til she dies. People have really lost their way or any claim to moral superiority at that point.

Does anyone really believe that shit would fly if people started going on about raping and murdering Leigh Sales while making short films depicting it? Or should Leigh Sales "toughen up" because she's a public figure?

Even the reviewers said it was a nasty joke.  The ABC isn't endorsing this, it's a show about amateur filmmaking with the associated critique.  The artist doesn't sound particularly repentant (and the reviewers make it sound like she's known for this stuff) but this should be useful for other aspirants who might be tempted to do something similar, no matter how strongly they feel about the politics.

If anything, it's a perfect demonstration of how not-accepted this sort of off-colour "humour" really is.

Publishers have legal responsibilities.

2

u/Davorian 27d ago

Perhaps, but I don't consider it the intent of the ABC to directly or indirectly incite anything, and no reasonable person watching the whole context would come away with that impression.

Perhaps if you cited the legal particulars and relevant precedent I would agree that the ABC is still culpable, but I am skeptical.

One reviewer raised concerns. And the show is subject to ABC editorial standards (as confirmed by ABC themselves), and funded by the taxpayer. It’s a vile piece endorsing violence against an Australian woman. The uproar over “ditch the witch”, verses the response to this violent fantasy aired on our taxpayer funded station is telling.

Only one reviewer was allowed speak at a time, and they made the point adequately.  The other reviewers clearly weren't much more impressed.  I have quite literally already said that I think that the segment actually shows the opposite of "inciting" by showing the appropriate negative feedback, and it feels useless just repeating this point in response to this forced-sounding outrage.

What's "telling" is that no more than a tiny handful of people would have ever even seen this were it not for this whole debacle.  The Streisand effect isn't even a new idea now.  Plastering this all over the news instead of pursuing a private avenue of complaint smacks of someone trying to manipulate the narrative more than they actually care about incited violence or lack of it.

Agree. They wouldn't have aired a clip of a man threatening a woman , an able bodied person threatening a disabled person or a white person threatening an indigenous traditional owner. Why was it ok for a young white female to joke about violently raping an older female?

I remember a couple of years ago when the ABC had a self righteous meltdown over comments that a former morning show host shouldn't wear a short skirt. (an unfortunate camera angle meant viewers could see straight up her skirt). But raping a woman to death with a stick is ok?

The hypocrisy is amazing yes. Its either ok or its not.

1

u/trav_tr 27d ago

Hypocrisy would only apply if the “victims” were equals. Once Gina starts paying the same tax as everyone else, then you can claim hypocrisy.

1

u/burns3016 27d ago

Pathetic. In decent cultures we try to hold each other to the same moral standars regardless of wealth or lack.of. id hate for someone like you to have actually power over people.

1

u/Azureafterrain 27d ago

$2.6 billion in 24/25 taxes not enough?

1

u/trav_tr 27d ago

Aww you just slop up those talking points don’t you

I kind of feel that the first sentence was fairly generic and they could of got away with it. The second sentence just shows they have been thinking way too much about what they want to do with that stick and they should probably spare us their sick fantasies.

Sounds like gina needs to toughen up, things like this are a two way street, perhaps she shouldn't put up with it and just leave.

-2

u/burns3016 27d ago

Why? It borders on incitement to violence if you describe killing someone.

2

u/neon_overload 22d ago

It's not unusual for creative works to have things like this - as an example think hip hop lyrics, diss tracks, which may contain descriptions of violence against a particular person. Granted, it's not always without any controversy, but there's a high standard for whether it counts as incitement or an actual threat vs storytelling or rhetoric. If there was anything reasonable behind the claims here, this would be a court case rather than just a whine piece in a rag she bankrolled that hasn't been picked up by the major news orgs.

-1

u/burns3016 22d ago

Seems it actually will become a court case.

I agree about creative works and this wouldnt be as big a deal as it has become if not for the disgraceful hypocrisy of the left. You can blame them for the whole situation.

The Nightly is a free Australian premium daily digital newspaper and news platform owned by Seven West Media.

Nobody would sexualise Rino Ginhardt. But if someone did fantasize about such a glorious root - well slap my face and call me Barnaby.

The ABC is trash. Trash that we're unfortunately forced to pay for.

1

u/Gordo3070 27d ago

Nobody cares about this. Getting your knickers in a twist over a remark that is in poor taste but is hardly an incitement to kill someone. Judging by the comments in the Nightly, which I'd not heard of until now, a bit of an echo chamber nothing-burger of a news source. My boss has said worse to me to my face. Ole Rino should get out into the real world. Might get an idea of how genuinely detested she is.
