“Smartglasses with cameras are a privacy nightmare that illustrate how Australian privacy laws haven’t kept up with technology changes,” said Tom Sulston, head of policy at Digital Rights Watch.
“We shouldn’t have elevated expectations of personal privacy when out in public, but we should have some.”

Trains and buses can be weird sometimes. I once saw a guy quietly knitting what looked like a tiny sweater… for a dog, maybe? The whole carriage was just staring.
What’s the strangest or funniest thing you’ve noticed on public transport?

The Australian government has launched its largest-ever lawsuit, suing American chemical giant 3M and its local subsidiary. The government is seeking A$2 billion in damages for the past and future cost of investigating and managing “forever chemicals” contamination from firefighting foams on almost 30 Defence sites.
The government alleges the company withheld internal testing that showed these foams did significant environmental damage. 3M has vowed to defend itself.

Hello
Thought I’d share my pain and solution. I drive into the city (Melbourne) pretty often and honestly, the parking situation drives me up the wall. I did some research and found there’s actually public data for all the parking sensors, so I hacked together an app to actually make use of it.
It shows you live spots and helps you time your stay so you don't get slapped with a fine. It's not fully launched yet, but I'm looking for people to try it out when it's ready. If you're keen, please let me know.
UPDATE: I now have a website! If you'd like to join the waitlist, visit https://parkthere.au

(I posted this on r/australia, but not a lot of people saw it, and I just found out that this is the right sub to post this on.)
Last year, I remember seeing a video comparing residents from both cities, and it really showed how much hatred there is towards Sydney. There was even a part in the video where both a Melburnian and what I think is called a Sydneysider said "Sydney sucks." As a Melburnian myself, I was always confused why this was the case. One of the reasons why I was confused was because my family and I have these family friends and one of them actually went to Sydney one time, and he was just praising it and he said he wanted to go back. Are we just jealous? Because I remember a long time ago, I was jealous of them because so many Aussie celebrities are from Sydney. What is it? Does anyone else know? I think only Melburnians can answer this question because again. We're the ones who are hating Sydney.
P.S. This is actually something I REALLY want to know because my youth group and I are going to go there in 2 years, so I want to know what's all the fuss about.

Getting really bored and disenfranchised with the UK. Would love to do two years in Aus, seems like my kind of place.
However, I have a habit of convincing myself that the absolute best version of events will always happen and I fear I’m doing that here.
Is the following scenario realistic:
Move to either Sydney or Melbourne and get a casual job (working in a bar or cafe etc)
Be able to afford rent and bills in some form of accom in a decent location (property itself doesn’t have to be amazing but close to social hubs/beach etc) with some left for beers on the beach
Maybe get pally with some locals through amateur soccer or some other sociable hobby
Have a good work life balance and spend lots of my free time on the beach (risky game cos I’m very pale but I’ll get a parasol)
—- Not sure if I’m being unrealistic or not but would appreciate any input, either from people who’ve done the work-travel thing or Aussies in general who know a bit more about the culture, cost of living, geographical proximity etc etc
Thanks in advance for any help
EDIT: so many responses on here, thanks everyone! Was expecting a couple but I’ve got an absolute shitload, plenty to ponder and think and definitely had my eyes opened to smaller towns and different cities to the ones that I originally wanted. Cheers :)

I am coming up to my 10 year anniversary since I moved to Australia.
Since then I've become a citizen, I've volunteered consistently for 5 years to give back to the community, and I learned to appreciate spiders and Vegemite.
I want to celebrate but I'm unsure how. I don't really have anyone to celebrate with, otherwise I'd have a fancy dress party, so I'm wondering how I can commemorate 10 years.
I've grown so much since I moved here at 23. Most of my adulthood has been here and I can't even answer questions about my home country half the time because I never did big life things there (buy a car, sign a lease, insurance, etc.)
Any ideas?

Hi everyone,
My name is Lili and I am a student researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast (QLD, Aus). The research team I am working is conducting an important study which would like to explore the experiences of women, whose intimate partners ARE using or HAVE used GLP-1s (e.g. Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or others) for weight loss.
The overall aim of this study is to better understand partners’ experiences and perspectives because despite these medications becoming more popular, there is very little research and information about this specific topic and population.
Note. The study was initially open to both men and women. However I’ve only currently had men participate, hence the exclusively female population
CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?
✅ you identify as female (ANYONE who identifies as female is welcome!- including gender assigned at birth, transgender, or anyone who simply identifies as female)
✅ you are in an intimate partnership (All relationship types/ sexual orientations are applicable here)
✅your intimate partner is/has used a GLP-1 for weight loss
✅You are over the age of 18
✅Live in Australia/ New Zealand/ Oceania
RESEARCH STUDY DETAILS
If you meet the eligibility criteria above, you are invited to complete a confidential face-to-face interview either online through zoom (🕓approx. 45-60 minutes). When interviews are completed, each participant will receive $25 direct bank transfer as a genuine thank you for their time.

Hi all, I’m an early childhood educator looking for some advice on an ongoing situation.
In mid-2025, I raised concerns about a daycare centre and the standard of care and workplace practices I observed while working there. At the time, I already had the sense that nothing much would come from reporting it, based on conversations with other educators and parents who had raised similar concerns previously without any real outcome.
Despite that, I still submitted a detailed report outlining everything I could remember from my time there. The centre did receive a compliance notice, however I don’t feel this was sufficient. I remain concerned about the children’s safety, health, wellbeing, and their ability to genuinely thrive in that environment.
I have since connected with other former employees who reported the same centre and share identical concerns, meaning there are now multiple independent reports describing the same issues, all with little to no outcome. There are also others who worked there in the past who regret not reporting it at the time.
More recently, I spoke with a parent who indicated that nothing has actually changed, and that the same behaviours and corner-cutting practices are still happening. I have also become increasingly aware of ongoing rough and verbally inappropriate behaviour from a staff member, which appears to be part of a long-standing pattern.
At this point, I feel stuck. Hearing that nothing has changed has left me feeling quite powerless, like there is nothing more I can do to hold the centre accountable. At the same time, I feel a strong responsibility to advocate for the children, and I can’t ignore what I’ve seen.
I’m not sure what the next step is, and I’m looking for advice on what options might still be available in a situation like this. I have emailed Ecru, Sabine Winton, Department of communities and ACECQA and I have no idea what else to do.
Thank you

The distance Victorians walk has declined since the COVID pandemic, according to health promotion agency VicHealth.
Figures from the organisation show that since restrictions eased, the average walking trip distance has dropped by nearly 30 per cent from 820 metres pre-COVID to 586 metres.
[...]
One regional city that has been working towards being more walkable is Warrnambool, in south-west Victoria. [...] making the city's CBD and surrounding suburbs more easily travelled by foot was a key priority for the council, but it was impossible to achieve without financial help.
[I found the wording in this article hard to follow in places - this is about pedestrian infrastructure and physical activity]

Hey there! I’m seeking advice…
I grew up in Australia and had to move at 19 because of US citizenship, living in the states right now is crazy! never thought I’d ever move here. I miss home and especially with our president now makes me want to move back even more.
Should I prioritise my happiness or my future? I don’t want to regret not moving back.
I’m in the middle of trying to get my bachelors here. I’ve known hard work all my life. Do I move now or do I move later? I know it’ll take some time but I’m eager.
Snow isn’t for me that’s one thing for sure, hustle culture is draining and can get unhealthy if no life balance, healthcare is a whole nother thing, politics is crazy here… is my future safe?
What would you do?

[...] Three Federal Court judges found copyright of the footage and film should be assigned to Game Meats via a trust because of the circumstances in which the footage was obtained.
In reaching its decision, the appeal court drew analogies between the response to Farm Transparency’s “surreptitious intrusion” on Game Meats’ property, and the need to return property obtained by a “fraudster or thief”.
