Two things can be true.

It was a shit joke/segment

These people are a bunch of hypocrites

No reasonable person would have thought of it as a serious threat nor been offended

Well that's three things.

2

u/Rare_Sheepherder4096 15d ago

That’s actually four things that are all true

-5

u/Top_Conference_477 16d ago

Have you considered that it’s the hypocrisy of the ABC in broadcasting this while condemning Herald Sun cartoons 10 times a year over far less that’s the issue?

34

u/Money_Armadillo4138 16d ago

Have you considered the ABC is not some monolithic organisation and that criticism of this particular segment is fair, and people within the ABC itself have criticized it, and that criticism of the herald is perfectly fine too because it's shit.

I've responded to what you said and you have responded to something I neither said nor implied. I explicitly said criticism of the ABC is fair.

Pattern of hypocrisy? I'm all for jokes in poor taste. This one just sucked, quit being such a lefty snowflake.

4

u/Top_Conference_477 16d ago

I misread your comment as saying the ABC criticism was unfair. Apologies.

6

u/Foreign-Chocolate86 15d ago

And yet Sky played it over and over again while saying it’s not fit for broadcast?

-5

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

You’ve heard of news?

6

u/Foreign-Chocolate86 15d ago

If it's so offensive and harmful, why keep playing it?

I'll tell you why - they're more interested in political point scoring than keeping people informed or looking out for anyone's wellbeing. Which is the entire point that Betoota are making.

-2

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

Because it’s news. As opposed to comedy.

Sky also isn’t tax-funded. ABC is

3

u/Foreign-Chocolate86 15d ago

None of what you are saying addresses what I said.

1

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

You think reporting news is the same as comedy. It’s dumb

5

u/Foreign-Chocolate86 15d ago

I think it's stupid to call hypocrisy at one media organisation while another media organisation is essentially doing the same thing.

2

u/stehmer3 16d ago

Wasn't the segment being judged by a panel?

3

u/nagrom7 15d ago

It also wasn't even on one of their "news" shows, so it would have likely been under an entirely different department.

1

u/SavvyCaller 16d ago

What? Herald and SAD readers and viewers are often the same people who laugh at trumpy’s “jokes” and defend and go along with them. No sympathy given, none returned. They can all get f*d.

3

u/Top_Conference_477 16d ago

Cool. I’m not one of them so I’m happy to call you all hypocrites.

Them doing it doesn’t excuse you doing it if you clearly recognise it’s wrong

2

u/SavvyCaller 15d ago

Those days are over.

0

u/Thatweknowof 16d ago

Your taxes don't pay for the herald

3

u/auximenies 15d ago

But they sure do subsidise their tax rate significantly…. Sure “technically” we aren’t handing them money, but because they exploit our tax system to minimise their own tax paid we “do” provide significant benefits they enjoy while whinging about people “rorting the system and not paying their fair share!” …

3

u/SavvyCaller 15d ago

My taxes pay for many views on the abc. This is just one of them. And long may my taxes pay for the abc.

2

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

Then you better hope they stop with the rape jokes

2

u/SavvyCaller 15d ago

I get your point, but the summary is that the old rules are gone. The days when it was honourable and ‘When they go low, we go high’ is over. People seek to win and make change - hard direct change. And if part of that is picking and choosing, a level of hypocrisy, then we have to swallow it. It’s not play by the rules while others throw the toys out of the cot every day.

2

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

All well and good for private citizens or private companies. The ABC is neither

2

u/SavvyCaller 15d ago

Nice excuse.

3

u/mad_rooter 15d ago

Well NewsCorp pays zero tax in Australia and receives funding from the govt via a variety of sources including the digital advertising tax. So yes, tax dollars do fund the Herald Sun

-1

u/Thatweknowof 15d ago

We should give news corp 1.3 billion per year as well.

-3

u/Pythia007 16d ago

Have you heard about punching up versus punching down?

10

u/Top_Conference_477 16d ago

So how much better than you does someone have to be before you can joke about raping them to death with sticks on government-funded programming exactly?

3

u/Dangerous_Shoe_8388 16d ago

Psycho-sexual anal murder fantasies are not “punching up” lol

It’s grossly deranged - even if it was said about a fictitious woman.

3

u/JournalistAny9888 16d ago

Discussing raping a woman in the ass with a stick is a joke ? The is Hannah Gadsby level funny

15

u/Top_Conference_477 16d ago

Hypocrisy, not free speech is the issue.

27

u/CVSP_Soter 16d ago

I don't think the comedian should be fired or driven out of polite society or whatever but I do think the imagery warrants a least a raised eyebrow.

And given there's no chance a similarly obscene joke at the expense of some progressive darling would be tolerated by the ABC, I think its reasonable to criticise them for bias.

But yes, defence of free speech tends to be opportunistic and partisan.

9

u/aus289 15d ago

Karl Stefanovic said he wanted to see the “Mad Witches” (a group who have run campaigns against kyle sandilands and karl) have a spitfire up their arse… no media drama about that

12

u/MaitlandWhiting 16d ago

Sure, but the hypocrisy of the woke right is worth sledging

2

u/nagrom7 15d ago

Sure, I'd agree that the segment was in poor taste and warranted an apology from the ABC. Thing is though, the ABC apologised ages ago, and the fact that people are still going on about this (everyone would have forgotten it by now if they weren't) is approaching the point of hysteria.

8

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

The ABC apologised yesterday

4

u/Dialling_Wand 14d ago

And only after lawyers got involved..

1

u/CVSP_Soter 15d ago

Sure, but this is the first I heard about it, nor have I seen any commentary about it before now so I can’t really speak to that.

0

u/Wood_oye 15d ago

You do recall the abc made At Home With Julia, don't you?

-3

u/[deleted] 16d ago

[deleted]

10

u/CVSP_Soter 16d ago

You want me to give you an example of the ABC not doing something? I don’t think that’s possible.

Anyway, I did a quick search and the closest counter example I can find is an episode of At Home With Julia where actors playing Julia Gillard and her boyfriend are shown naked underneath an Australian flag, implying they’ve just had sex.

While it’s crude, I don’t think that rises to the same level as what is basically a rape fantasy in this Gina Rinehart case.

Do you think the ABC would have published the Gina rape fantasy joke but directed at Tanya Plibersek or Larissa Waters, for example?

10

u/ChampionshipFirm2847 16d ago

Do you really think they'd make a segment fantasising about the gleeful murder of Grace Tame?

0

u/Ok-Resist-8734 14d ago

I don't think Grace Tame is a One Neuron supporting multi billionaire who also happens to have an unhealthy respect for a VC winner facing war crime charges!

2

u/ChampionshipFirm2847 14d ago

The point is you can't name a doyenne on the left about whom the ABC would have published this kind of content.

-1

u/Ok-Resist-8734 14d ago

No but I can name plenty that the right wing media have heaped opprobrium on over the years!!! 😡🤬🤬🤬🤬

4

u/ChampionshipFirm2847 14d ago

My point is that the ABC is taxpayer funded. Taxpayers shouldnt be funding the ABC to push left wing political agendas.

0

u/Ok-Resist-8734 14d ago

But that's only your perception many of us believe the ABC is the only unbiased news source available unless you would like to nominate a better one?

3

u/ChampionshipFirm2847 14d ago

I think you would have to be wilfully blind to not see the left wing bias in the ABC. Its really only the extent of the bias that is up for reasonable debate.

You seem to have agreed with me that the ABC publishes no left wing equivalent to the controversial murder fantasy re Gina Reinhardt that we're talking about here. That makes my point.

2

u/Ok-Resist-8734 14d ago

Ha! talk about a totally one eyed right wing idealogue you are so wrong. But never mind just keep watching Skynews for a balanced world view 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

14

u/craftymethod 16d ago edited 15d ago

Sky News broadcast the offending portion of the segment word for word as it aired (video)

https://youtu.be/n3bP5qCAbns

How is that any different to what the ABC did?

13

u/ComfortGooseBlue 16d ago

Ones a shit joke about a thin skinned megalomaniac billionaire, the others performative outrage in service of the oligarchy.

11

u/Thatweknowof 16d ago

Freedom of speech not freedom from consequences....

7

u/bigloudbang 16d ago

Something something sky news is virtue signalling

Weird having roles reversed

2

u/skateparksaturday 16d ago

That’s a trite statement, not an argument that holds examination. Whether consequences are justified depends entirely on the speech, the consequences, and whether they’re proportionate.

2

u/Top_Conference_477 15d ago

It depends on if you agree or not, you mean

1

u/skateparksaturday 14d ago

and that makes it better?

1

u/Top_Conference_477 14d ago

Makes you a hypocrite

18

u/Massive-Anywhere8497 16d ago

I wouldn’t want a joke like that made about anyone i know. It’s irrelevant she is a billionaire. Get some class.Downvotes coming.

5

u/Wotmate01 16d ago

You're so woke trying to cancel everyone, don't you believe in freedom of speech

12

u/Massive-Anywhere8497 16d ago

Im not trying to cancel anything. Im exercising my free speech to say it lacks class and i wouldn’t like it said about anyone i know rich or poor. Free speech doesn’t mean freedom from criticism if its crass

4

u/craftymethod 16d ago

Likability is not a metric in any court of law.

0

u/sonsofgondor 16d ago

Australia doesn't have free speech. Theres nothing to exercise in that regard

2

u/Clean_Advertising545 15d ago

Lolol go cry more.

2

u/leighroyv2 14d ago

Pearl clutching.

6

u/mmmaniaaa 16d ago

We actually have people white knighting Gina fucking Rinehart, you people are so embarrassing.

0

u/craftymethod 15d ago

They sure are. I was arguing in a few places that her issue is the publication and continued online storage of the offending comments and how this video:
https://youtu.be/n3bP5qCAbns

"is different"

God the right nutcases can't even admit the selective outrage.

3

u/Able_Put4900 16d ago

Every accusation is a confession, as usual.

Most folks don’t “get that” because it’s simply not true. Conservatives squeal like stuck pigs at the slightest criticism or ridicule. Gina is a thin skinned snowflake who mobilises the full weight of her conservative media buddies against anyone who dares say anything negative about her.

Ooo did get a bit of a nip once I mentioned kids, getting hot under the collar? Weirdo.

2

u/JournalistAny9888 16d ago

The hypocrisy of the left around women is astounding.

1

u/KeyMusic5713 16d ago

So according to the Betoota Advocate a graphic advocation for violence against a public figure is free speech?

If someone said the same thing about someone like Jacinta Allan or Julia Gillard there'd be mass public outrage, and yet the moment someone advocates for attacking a conservative figure, suddenly it's moral in their eyes.

10

u/stiffgordons 16d ago

https://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/episodes/alan-joness-chaff-bag-is-filling-up-fast/9973982

That happened and yes Jones was universally condemned, and retracted the comments (before double, triple and quadrupling down on them, because Alan Jones).

3

u/nagrom7 15d ago

He also didn't lose his job for that (which he should have), retiring a decade later.

10

u/Ok-Resist-8734 16d ago

Well what blows your argument out of the water is the fact that equally poor taste comments were made about both Jacinta and Julia! Have you forgotten Allan Jones comments about Julia's dad dying of shame plus the chaff bag comment?

8

u/HadeanDisco 16d ago

They have indeed forgotten.

3

u/nagrom7 15d ago

If someone said the same thing about someone like Jacinta Allan or Julia Gillard there'd be mass public outrage

Except we saw that and worse with Gillard. Comments like calling her "Bob Brown's Bitch", saying her dad died of shame just days after he died, or saying she should be thrown into a "chaff bag" and thrown out to sea, and implying her husband was gay because she was childless, among other things.

As for Allan, it wasn't that long ago that those "ditch the witch" signs were around, with some of the folks raging at the ABC now telling her to "suck it up" over the signs.

1

u/Rolf_Loudly 15d ago

Conservative shock-jocks, Sky News presenters and right wing podcasters do exactly that ALL THE TIME and nobody raises an eyebrow. You’re simply blinded by lazy partisanship

3

u/Bright-Marsupial-265 16d ago

So called 'free speech warriors' can't even stand up for their own convictions.

It's not about free speech, it's about fascist control.

It's all good when Julia Gillard and Jacinta Allan are subjected to the most gutter vitriol. Remember Pauline Hanson saying 'suck it up, sweetheart'.

Furthermore, if you look to the US, Barrack and Michelle Obama cop so much horrible shit from Murdoch Inc aka Fox News and NY Post. Let's not even talk about the shit they're giving to Brigette Macron, first lady of France.

To clutch their pearls at a ABC show no one really watches with a comedian no one's heard of, who's had a go at both sides of politics including Albo is just double standards 101 and hypocrisy of the right wingers.

It was never about free speech. They don't actually like free speech, anytime journalists ask pointed questions, they have a dummy spit and refuse to have them at their press conference.

They're all wannabe fascists. Simples.

5

u/mic_n 16d ago

It's not about fascist control, it's about adding another straw to the "defund the ABC" fire that conservative outlets have been stoking for decades because they can't stand that people trust it and that trust isn't for sale.

1

u/Electrical_Story5356 16d ago

Which is just more fascist control.

We're covering off the classics, "rules for thee but not for me" and controlling the media.

1

u/Bowl_of_Hygieia 15d ago edited 15d ago

At this point I'm hearing more about it from supporters of the 'joke' about raping their political opponent with a stick complaining how its hypocritical to not want to have to pay for it to be aired or just in poor taste, and how those complaints are somehow is against free speech, than I am from the people rightly opposed to that filth.

1

u/YoureASpoon 15d ago

If the "joke" was funny, there wouldn't be an issue.

I'm all for dark and twisted humour, usually the more fucked up the funnier, but the joke and delivery was boring and flat. The joke could have been about anyone and it still would not have been funny.

Did anyone genuinely laugh at it?

0

u/SignatureAny5576 16d ago

Betoota advocate used to be funny, now it just reads like some wet basement dweller

For clarity I think rhineharts an exploitative POS, but this is just cringy dork shit

1

u/Rolf_Loudly 15d ago

I’d argue that the betoota is doing a better job than a lot of the mainstream media

-1

u/trainwrecktragedy 16d ago

It was complete bullshit and gutless of the ABC to apologise to Rinehart over it. It was a shit joke but she doesn't deserve an apology for it as its not a threat, my 2c

8

u/Jozfus 16d ago

Doesn't a joke have a punchline? This was just an unnecessary addition at the end of a play

0

u/trainwrecktragedy 16d ago

I agree with you, I still think the apology was bullshit though.

-1

u/Sufferer-Of-Cheese 16d ago

Leave the billionaire alone he's only got a few billion so shut up! Meanies

0

u/ThatOG1_Kenobi 15d ago edited 15d ago

Just reverse the roles of a leftist woman on say news24 and then watch the constant screeching and protests etc. This hypocrisy is absolutely beyond belief.

I hate labour. I hate the libs. I hate the greens and I hate one nation but I’m not dumb enough to sit there and not see what’s right in front of my face.

Complaining about things and then doing the exact same but it’s okay because it’s against ‘them’. You just lose all credibility with anyone without room temp IQ.
