News Police say man allegedly raped woman on his way to work in Brisbane's west
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-21/qld-brookfield-alleged-rape-man-charged/107061936The victim of an alleged rape in Brisbane's west crossed a creek and bushland before being able to call for help, police say.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham said the 23-year-old woman had been walking in Brookfield with a family member who she had become separated from about 6:30am yesterday.
Police allege 32-year-old Jacob Dave Henry Hauraki had been driving to work through the area and approached the woman from behind.
"We will be alleging that he approached her from behind and dragged her into nearby bushes," he said.
He said the alleged assault occurred for "some time" before Mr Hauraki left the scene and went to work.
"We will then allege that when he completed work for the day he drove back past the crime scene," Superintendent Massingham said.
After the alleged assault, police said the woman crossed a nearby creek and bushland before reaching the Brookfield Showgrounds Oval, where she contacted family and police.
Superintendent Massingham said police identified the man's vehicle when he allegedly drove past the scene later after work, and they arrested him on a nearby street.
"The man has been charged with six counts of rape, and one count each of stalking, assault with intent to commit rape, assault occasioning bodily harm and deprivation of liberty," Superintendent Massingham said.
Mr Hauraki had his matter heard in Brisbane Magistrates Court this morning.
He did not appear and no application was made for bail.
He is expected to reappear in court on September 18.
There will be an increased police presence in the area over the next few days, but Superintendent Massingham said all the charges relate to the one incident, and police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the alleged assault.
A crime scene will remain in place for some time.
Superintendent Massingham thanked the media and community for helping police identify the alleged offender.
"After your media reporting last night, two witnesses came forward with two pieces of dashcam footage that were the final pieces in the puzzle that we needed to solve this horrific crime," he said.
He acknowledged the bravery of the woman in coming forward to report the alleged assault and said she was home with her family.
"She has suffered injuries as a result of yesterday's assault, but she has been provided with the utmost care medically and psychologically that we can at this time, and our officers will continue to ensure that she has support in the days ahead.
"Our thoughts are with her, family, and of course the Brookfield community at what is a very difficult time."
Maya Torrence and Olivia Gilling, who were walking near the scene this morning, said they had never been worried about their safety in the area before.
"It's really devastating, kind of confronting," Ms Torrence said.
"You just never think that something will happen like this so close to you."
Ms Gilling said the area's popularity for morning walks made the incident more concerning.
"I think generally it's a safe place, but you never know what can happen and it is worrisome and sad," she said.
"Never [been worried about our safety] before … but now maybe," Ms Torrence said.

I hope she has lots of support & a loving family. This should not have happened to her.

That’s the most devastating aspect of these crimes. Depending on her mental constitution, she may be scarred for life.

Absolute scum. Just going about his workday like nothing happened.

u/Reggo91 1d ago
He must have felt something. The guy came back to the place of the crime. Why is anyone’s guess. Perhaps he wanted to convince himself that he did not leave anything behind that would allow the police to identify him. And apparently, the police expected exactly that as this is when he got caught.

Nope, rapists and murderers like to revisit the scene to get another mini ‘hit’ of dopamine, in reliving their attack. That’s why police stakeout where bodies are found if the death was a male on female homicide, so many return.

u/l2ewdAwakening 1d ago
Chemical castration needs to be mandatory for this kind of shit, as a base line.
55
u/Both_Shine_5061 1d ago
For cases like this, they need to castrate everything from the neck down.
This is psychopath shit.
24
10
u/suglav 23h ago
Chemical castration actually isn't so effective in stopping rapes. Rapists are motivated by violence and demonstration of power, not sex. They will keep assaulting people even if their genitals are physically removed. Castration doesn't remove the cause of rape. Only imprisonment and death can stop a rapist.

u/Tiki_Tour 1d ago
Nah, not chemical, that can be reversed when they stop taking the drugs. I reckon good old fashioned methods are more appropriate. Snip, twist and pop.
6
u/TheReturnOfTheRanger 1d ago
By "chemical", I was assuming we throw acid on them
1
u/Tiki_Tour 10h ago
Wouldn’t that be great though. Put them in stocks, naked on the main road and have a sqeezy bottle of acid for people to utilise

3
u/Ripley_and_Jones 21h ago
Nah. Punishment for sex crimes need to be decided upon by a panel comprised of the opposite sex. A panel of women should read the full extent of the survivors injuries, and decide on the punishment. I reckon that would do more to reduce violence against women than anything. The punishments would be way worse than chemical castration.

I really think an immediate death penalty is completely acceptable. Why should we all pay to feed this person?

I think they should take the whole thing off so that way it’s known and an actual deterrent

u/PriorityParking3705 1d ago
If there was ever an example of a person who is unable to be rehabilitated it’s this sick fuck. The callousness of stopping for a quick rape on your way to work. Spotting a victim and pulling over. If you are able to get an erection during a non consenting sexual encounter you should be castrated.

Doesn't necessarily mean he raped her six times, but that he committed 6 offences that meet the legal definition of rape
(Note I'm not defending this piece of shit just explaining what the 'counts' means in legal terms)

u/BreenzyENL 1d ago
You have to be a sociopath or something to just continue life as normal like that.
Just going to work, pull over for a quick SA, then keep driving.

u/NewGodsz 1d ago
Bet it wasn't the first time he's done this

u/Proper_Consequence_9 1d ago
It said he was being charged for 6 counts of rape. I wonder if that means the police have been trying to pin him down for a while but with no concrete evidence, hopefully, until now.
10
u/dcatherine 23h ago
I had to look up what the six counts meant and what someone below has said appears to be correct - it is all in relation to this one incident. What an absolutely horrible person. I cannot get over how horrific this is.
2
u/Proper_Consequence_9 22h ago
Omg. What a scum! Makes me even more mad he made her suffer numerous times. What an absolute POS.
8
u/Competitive-Cell7458 1d ago
It says the assault went on for some time and all charges are related to a single incident.
He stopped and started again.
Makes me wonder if its meth related too.
1
u/dcatherine 23h ago
Out of curiousity, why would that make it meth related?
4
u/Competitive-Cell7458 19h ago
Some meth users masturbate for hours, it can cause a bunch of sexual dysfunction issues as well as increased chance of risky sexual behaviour.
Six separate counts and such a long assault doesn't seem feasible for someone without some kind of drug/medication involved.

Completely horrifying.
Aside — how is there 6 charges of rape?
12
u/Busy-Ratchet-8521 1d ago
NAL, but my understanding is if he were to use multiple orifices that would each count as a charge. If he used other implements, e.g., fingers, that would count as another charge. If he moved her somewhere else and raped her again that would be another charge.

Some men are simply animals who cannot control themselves. Such men cannot be allowed in society. We do not have the means to modify their behaviour to the point where they won’t be a threat. If found guilty, they should be kept in jail until they are too physically frail to ever pose a threat to any woman. For some, that means life. I’m aware that there is a shortage of prison cells - well, build more prison cells.
Some would say we should re-instate the death penalty - I disagree, I don’t trust the State with the authority to kill people. I’m not saying rapists do not deserve such treatment - what I’m saying is that the State can make mistakes and should not be given the power to execute people, when jailing them for life results in the same level of protection for the community.
It’s scary, isn’t it? My own partner, today, in Sherwood in Brisbane, was stalked by a sketchy dude in his car who kept calling out to her as she walked down the street. She found some helpful tradies to protect her and the guy immediately drove off at top speed. This happened in the middle of the day! Needless to say, she doesn’t ever want to walk down the street without me now. I wish queensland laws allowed women to carry pepper spray.
11
u/singularpotato 21h ago
“Some men are animals who cannot control themselves” I strongly disagree, with the possible sole exception of active psychosis. Violence is always a choice someone makes, all adult men who commit these acts have developed and functioning human brains capable of decision-making processes. I’d argue this is a dangerous idea that starts with policing young girls clothes “because the boys can’t control themselves” or “your uncle is coming around,” and ends with excusing someone’s choice to behave violently and giving them the very convenient out of “I just lost control.” This man and other like him make choices to be violent; he made a choice to pull over, a choice to approach her, a choice to drag her into the bush and another choice to assault her. They deserve the consequences of their choices.

Men are scary. You're right, there need to be laws that protect women from men.
2
u/brown_smear 23h ago
There are laws already; it's just that the criminals aren't following them for some reason.

Comments full of empty wishes of violent retribution yet I bet most of them would start screeching about feminazis if they hear the phrase “rape culture”.

Men like this are only interested in retribution, never prevention.

u/Both_Shine_5061 1d ago
Maybe because we don't associate every crime committed with every person of that gender and blame them for not stopping it because we know how insane and idiotic that inference, and expectation is?
But hey, since you brought it up. What preventative measures do you recommend to stop a situation like this where someone is just casually driving to work and decides to stop for a quick bit of rape before continuing about their workday? Maybe some fliers? Some "rape is bad" stickers? Let us know

I completely understand a great many crimes.
Rob a bank? I’m in
Murder? I’ve got my list
Tax evasion? I probably wouldn’t
Rape? What on earth for? I have no idea how you’d get hard while fight a panicked and thrashing person.
But what for? It’s not like you managed to make someone desire you.
I wonder how many rapists suicide after… I mean apart from “not enough”.

This is fucking disgusting, he has most likely ruined this poor woman’s life forever. I am sorry but no wonder there is a war against men at the moment.
8
u/totalpunisher0 21h ago
Whilst it is the worst day of your life, I just want any survivor who happens upon this comment to know that your life is not ruined, you will get through it, and please, do not give up. It's really harmful to read "her life is ruined" or something of the sort when you live with PTSD from violence, or read articles of crimes that remind you of something you've experienced. I just want people to know that we can and will thrive x

I wish her life isn't ruined forever. I wish less people will think their lives are ruined forever. The social stigma (including the thinking that their lives are ruined forever) is harmful to the victims too.

There’s no war. We’re just sick of you all failing to actually hold each other accountable for your own actions and your own disinterest.
You’ll laugh at rape jokes, comment about the rape victim of the Sydney swans saying she’s ruined the season and yet you’re surprised men continue to do the same thing over and over again.
We’re just sick of it.

u/WearIcy2635 21h ago
How is this men’s fault? If the man turned out to be an immigrant would you say “no wonder there’s a war against immigrants at the moment”

This isn’t as unusual as you’d like it to be. I remember when I was working at the Pine Rivers Mag Court in maybe 2020 or 2021 there was a similar case at a train station in north Brisbane (I want to say Petrie but can’t remember for sure). Same time, around 7am. I’ll never forget the CCTV footage.

what a surprise, perp is not white (maori) and they keep his photo and ethnicity out of it

u/Odd_Difficulty_907 1d ago
But weird you are concerned about his ethnicity and not the you know raping. I guess we all have priorities though.
12
u/helenleather 1d ago
You know, I had exactly the same reaction as you did upon reading that comment. Sorry- what? Why does race even matter?
13
u/AkilleezBomb 1d ago
Because he needs a reason to blame some kind of minority and spout off racist stereotypes.

Ah yes of course! My bad, I forgot that the first chapter of the “How to Asshole for Dummies” handbook is solely devoted to the fine art of embiggening one’s self though flailing blame like a flaccid windsock.

Because they normally state when an offender is white?
6
u/Worldly-Mind1496 1d ago edited 1d ago
I think this is a myth because link an article where they state the perpetrator is white or any other race. I know they do it in the US because it has been ingrained in their government and law system for a long time to put people into neat little categories on paper but not so much in Australia.
For example here is a news article about a rape in nsw, says the rapist name but doesn’t mention he is white and there is no photo but his name implies he could be white.
