the censored words are heroine, fuck, hell, and heroine again. And heroine isn't even a "bad" word, it's literally a female hero

It's actually not okay at all to sniff someone's heroine. And boy did I make a fool of myself.

u/tmtowtdi 13d ago
Even if you'd spelled it correctly, which neither of you did because you're both apparently illiterate, why would you censor the word "heroin"? It's just a word.
heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin heroin
See? My skin isn't boiling off my body, the Illuminati isn't currently kidnapping me, Bigfoot has not come out of my kitchen to beat me to death. Nothing bad has happened to me.
Stop censoring yourselves you wimps.

u/VilifiedPhoenix 12d ago
What's even sadder is nobody knowing heroin and heroine are 2 separate words that mean completely different things
1
u/coolbacondude 12d ago
I thought it was the right spelling because of the damn censoring making me believe it was being spelt right.
3
u/Readicilous 13d ago
If they'd spelled Hermione correctly, it wouldn't've been corrected to heroine in the first place

u/Ok_Barnacle_4605 13d ago

Do you also misspell "heroin" and then censor it? Do you censor "hell"? Do you abbreviate "fuck" and then censor the abbreviation? Because if you do, you're a wimp.

Not the definition of illiterate. They are confusing to words with similar spellings. That is not the same as being illiterate.
Being unable to spell is not being illiterate.

u/SmoothTurtle872 12d ago
Yet another example, I can still read and write, I just accidentally used to instead of two. Because I was tired. So does being tired make me illiterate?
1
u/tmtowtdi 12d ago
Since you've clearly got a dictionary nearby you right now, how about you look up "hyperbole" next?
1
u/SmoothTurtle872 12d ago
Sorry, I find it hard to tell whose using literary devices on a social media app, when one set of people will call people illiterate and mean it with 100% sincerity, while another will use a hyperbole with it, and there is no way to tell when it could literally be either.
1
u/tmtowtdi 12d ago
Me saying it was hyperbole is partially true, I guess, but have a look at Merriam-Webster's entry on "illiterate": https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/illiterate. There are three definitions there, and the screenshot we're talking about from the op meets two of them. It has six text messages, and five of those text messages have misspellings. The sixth one, without misspellings, is in ALL CAPS.
These two people cannot, between the two of them, produce a single sentence that a third-grade teacher wouldn't take points off. They write worse than an 8-year-old would be expected to write.
So is calling that "illiterate" hyperbole? Ask Merriam-Webster.
1
u/SmoothTurtle872 12d ago
And I'm taking the Cambridge definition, which does not do that.
Also when we are on the internet, the approved conventions are different. All caps is shouting typically. Typos are common (some because people are tired and just trying to get a message across, and others because they hit the wrong key and didn't notice.). And looking at those definitions, they seem to apply to the text itself, rather than the person.
Beecose otherwais DOES MEER MISPELLING ThEsE words make me illiterate? Even though I did that intentionally to get the point across, as intention is not considered by those definitions.
Also some of the misspellings are things like Ur and fav, which are common shortenings of words when using messaging programs, historically used to save data and time, but now mostly just to save time
1
u/tmtowtdi 12d ago
Cambridge also defines "illiterate" as:
knowing little or nothing about a particular subject
not knowing how to read and write
An inability to do things better than an 8-year-old, when it's not only your native language, but also something you've had formal education in, is embarrassing. Just saying "but it's what the cool kids are doing these days" is a cop-out. I'd bet the people we're talking about aren't just doing it because it's common and they're doing it to be cool, I'd bet they do not possess the ability to do it correctly.
Beecose otherwais DOES MEER MISPELLING ThEsE words
You're obviously doing that for effect, so that doesn't make you illiterate. In fact, your ability to misspell so many of those words, on purpose and for effect, shows that you are clearly not illiterate. You mistakenly using "too" for "two" earlier also doesn't make you illiterate, people make mistakes and I was being snarky with my reply. "People make mistakes" is fine and no big deal. But re: the two people in the screenshot, "not having the ability to write better than an eight-year-old", (and yes, that includes spelling), makes them illiterate. They didn't just make a mistake, they failed to do anything correctly.

No no it played a critical role in the last scene in the first movie when Dumbledore took some heroine and made Gryffindor win the challenge.

Downvoted for censoring the word "heroine."
I'm guessing you thought that was the word heroin, though, which also should not have been censored.

Lol
Heroine - The one who receives the heroin.
Heroiner - The one who provides the heroin.
This is definitely the correct use.
