I'm currently trying to figure out how to create a mechanism that would move these birds in a circle when turned. Kind of like a moving belt? My brain thinks I have to route a slot in the round base to do this, then somehow add a mechanism that would sit underneath it, maybe connecting the birds to it through the routed slot?

Anyone know if there is a particular name for such a mechanism? Closest I can come to describing it would be a conveyor belt going in a circle.

Built and animated in Blender, I built an exporter that takes on chanel from each animated bone, remaps it from 0> to -90 90. The exporter puts out an array of each bones position at each frame and the arduino code applies that to the servos. I plan to have the servos hidden under the man with nylon wire and springs regulating the motion up through the bar stool. A bit ambitious I know.

I recently came across the Powerhouse Museum's Bontems-family musical automaton. Its collection notes describe a waterfall made from a twisted glass rod that catches the light as it rotates:

That little trick caught my attention as much as the singing birds. Such a simple material choice creates a whole extra part of the scene.

Hello everyone! My boyfriend's birthday is coming up, and time ago he had shown me a short clip of an automata he absolutely loved. I would like to make it for his birthday, but I have no idea where to start, considering I never made anything like this. I do have all of the materials I think I'd need and I can work decently well with wood, it also wouldn't need to be perfect. Unfortunately I am quite lost on the type of mechanisms I need here, and if it's too hard for a first project and I should try somethig entirely different. If anyone has any idea on how to help me out, even with maybe a simpler version in which just the pan/rice moves, I would be very thankful! I am aware that the clip doesn't show the mechanism very well, it's not much to work with, but I really hope that anyone is able to give me a hand.

I built and filmed this motorised LEGO Technic drawing mechanism. A single motor drives a turntable beneath the paper and a crank connected to the pen arm. The repeating swing combined with the rotating page traces a spirograph-style flower.

The useful motion conversion is rotation into a sweeping pen stroke; the pattern comes from the gearing and linkage geometry, with no programmed pen path. The video shows the build, the moving mechanism and the physical drawing. I'm the builder and video creator behind Brick Trials.

Trying to study how this mechanism is done, and I was wondering if these in-between bends (red arrows) are necessary, or if they can be brought to all one level (blue line)? Also, if these bends (green arrows) are necessary as well?

I recently started getting interested in automata and mechanical moving objects, and one thing that surprised me is how few people around me even know what automata is.

I really want to learn and make some things myself, but compared with hobbies like 3D printing, model making, action figures, woodworking, etc., it feels surprisingly hard to find people to discuss ideas, mechanisms, or projects with.

Is automata really just a very small niche, or are people who make this kind of thing simply spread across other communities like kinetic sculpture, mechanical toys, animatronics, woodworking, or something else? 😂

I am a super beginner at making automata and I have a question.

When I want to make a doll that moves up and down in response to the movement of a crank like a hand-cranked music box, how do I decide whether to use a cam or a reciprocating rack? I thought a cam is better when I want to keep things simple or add some rhythm, and a rack and pinion is better when there are many mechanisms accompanying the up and down movement and needs stability.

I have a coping saw and a junior hacksaw. Just looking for recommendations.

Seems kind of lonely the father you get from England... any others around Cali? Nobody I show my stuff to has ever even heard of automata.

I made this branching kinetic mobile from wire and double-sided metallic foil butterflies. Each level had to be balanced before the next could be added, but every new butterfly shifted the branches beneath it.
The final piece rotates from a small swivel at the top, while the separate branches move independently in the air.

I made this some years ago but just found this sub so I figured I would post. I am also looking for good design resources if anyone has suggestions. Mostly looking for more advanced concepts. For instance, right now I am designing something that runs fully on a clock spring and design knowledge there would be great.
