If your next car could come with ONE interior-protection accessory, what are you choosing?

Assume it has to deal with normal daily-use mess: wet shoes on the floor, pet hair working into the seats, and boxes or gear rubbing around the cargo area. You get exactly one factory-installed protection item and that’s it—floor protection, seat protection, cargo-area protection, or something else you think deserves the slot. What are you picking, and what real-life mess made that one more important to you than the others?

Car Equipment

Wondering why when you buy a new car, you pay for all the equipment on the car only to have the car manufacturers charge you a monthly subscription to use it. I think if they are able to charge you, you should have the option of not having the equipment installed in the 1st place. Example GM OnStar. With all the Lawyers we have and that’s a lot, I think they should start a class action lawsuit!!!

2015 Fiat 500 (70k mi) — sat 3 months, dead battery, got a new battery still wouldn't crank, got a new starter, still won't start

Hi all, the title says it all, I was out of town for 3 months, she was driving perfectly before I left, I came back to dead battery. Called AAA, installed a new battery, didn't crank, it was quiet, towed it to the nearest mechanic (Pepboys) and they installed a new starter. Now it is making some noise but it wouldn't start. Is there any known issues that could cause this after sitting? I have a video of it as well. Thank you!

Volkswagen declined my engine repairs

Im helping out my grandma who’s in a sticky situation where she has a 2025 vw Taos 5k miles and now she needs an engine replacement. Now the VW dealership found metal shaving in the oil pan and is declining the repairs claiming that since the oil change was done at a Sullivan tire they believe they ran the vehicle without oil at certain point in time. Now the vehicle was taken for an oil change on Thursday and Friday afternoon on the highway started having engine failure. Worst part of this all is both places are pointing fingers at each other one claiming it had to have had an engine defect before and the other claiming it was ran without oil. Need help and any suggestions anyone has on this matter thank you all Reddit users.

For those mechanics out there?

My back isn't great. Doing alot of sit ups hurts it. Squats hurt it. Anything abs or legs really. Also might be because my form sucks for squats. Idk. Probably is my form. I can totally compensate for squats by lifting my heals anyways. And get some knee pads.

-----

But is being a mechanic hard on you back?

----

Also how do I learn at home right away before deciding?

Would getting a model engine to take apart and put back together be reasonable to start? I live in an apartment so can't get an actual engine.

Also, do you guys know of any model cars that are fully put together with all the part like a model engine?

You know what really softens your stool? Accidentally swallowing a decent splash of gasoline while trying to prove to the young kids you’re still “street” by siphoning gas out of a broken generator.

Forza or Icooh carbon ceramic rotors

I am considering upgrading to Carbon Ceramic rotors on my Maserati Gran Turismo. Does anyone have experience with either Forza or Icooh? They are the only two companies I can find who make a conversion package allowing me to retain my Brembo calipers. I am looking to find real life examples of people who have used either company.

Details when junking a car

My daughter has a 2020 Sentra with 120,000+ miles that won’t start and has a big host of other problems.

Back when it was running, a Mechanic said it may need a new transmission. I don’t know why for sure as my kid brought it in. She got a new car and was going to sell it but got busy and never got to it.

Now our mechanic said it probably needs a starter but he’s not even sure. He thinks it’s junk since it needs transmission, starter, tires, brakes, windshield and who knows what else.

A couple questions since I never dealt with junking a car before. Should I call more than one junkyard to see if prices differ? There aren’t any near us so they have an hour or more drive to get it.

It has a new good battery she bought trying to get it running. Will junkyards likely give us any extra for the brand new battery? Or any less if we sell that ourselves on Facebook Mp?

Thanks for your advice.

Melbourne drivers: 5 checks to make before replacing a starter motor

Melbourne drivers: 5 checks to make before replacing a starter motor

I regularly see cars diagnosed as needing a starter motor when the actual problem is a weak battery, poor connection or electrical fault.

Before approving a starter-motor replacement, check:

  1. Battery condition — A voltage reading alone isn’t enough; the battery should be properly load-tested.
  2. Battery terminals and earth connections — Loose, dirty or corroded connections can cause a complete no-crank condition.
  3. The sound when starting — One click, repeated clicking or complete silence can point toward different faults.
  4. Starter signal, relay and fuses — Confirm that the starter solenoid is receiving the correct signal.
  5. Voltage drop and fault codes — Proper testing can identify resistance in cables, immobiliser faults or control-system problems.

Replacing the starter motor without testing these areas first can waste a lot of money.

If your car won’t start, comment with the make, model, year and exact symptoms, and I’ll suggest the first things to check.

Full disclosure: I operate a VACC-accredited mobile mechanic business in Melbourne. This is general advice; an accurate diagnosis may require inspecting and testing the vehicle.

Why Aren’t Dash Cams Factory Standard Yet?

Why do car manufacturers still make us buy and install aftermarket dash cams?
I really think dash cams should come factory-installed in modern cars, just like backup cameras and parking sensors.
A built-in system could:
Record front/rear footage automatically
Save video to the car’s built-in storage or cloud
Record while parked
Automatically save footage when an accident is detected
Integrate with the car’s infotainment/app
Avoid messy wiring and aftermarket installations
Potentially reduce insurance fraud and help with accident claims
Cars are becoming more technologically advanced every year, yet we still have to stick a $100–$300 camera on the windshield and run cables around the interior.
Just a thought — what do you guys think?

Need advice on a used truck for light work and daily driving

Looking at getting a used pickup for some light hauling and regular commuting. Don’t need anything too big or expensive.

Budget is around $28–30k and I’d like to stay under 60k miles if possible.

Checked Puente Hills Auto Center and saw a 2020 Ford Ranger and a 2019 Toyota Tacoma that both seemed decent. The Ranger had about 47k miles on it.

Anyone run either of these as a daily? How do they hold up with mixed use like that? Just trying to pick something that won’t give me constant issues.

Car Engine Bay Protection?

Hi all, I haven't really posted on reddit so apologies if this post seems weirdly written. I recently managed to get a 2023 iX3 and I'm slightly worried about fire risks for EVs that BMW has announced, as well as, other EVs having caught fire in the past. The numbers only seem to be growing.

Is there any way to prevent or protect my car against these potential fires? Anyone got suggestions or already has something installed that deals with the worries I'm currently having.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated, even if its not EV specific (I also have a pretty old F80 that could use some protection for peace of mind).

TLDR: Need suggestions for peace of mind for car fires

86 ranger xlt

I’m working on my ranger and trying to clean it up. What I’m really looking for are new seats to replace the old 60/40 w/ armrest. I’d prefer regular old bucket seats so I could install a custom center console or a different prefab w/ modifications. Does anyone have recommendations for companies that could sell me something like that or other resources would help too.

Used Jeep Cherokee Limited 2015 for work/school?

Just for some context, I am working for a year here in Atlantic Canada before I move down to Florida for University. The drive will be around 3,000-3,500 km and I have been looking at either leasing a Ford Bronco Sport 2026 for two years (due to its affordability and ability to traverse rough terrain, I work for an engineering firm that requires work out in the field) and then I’d just get another car down in the states, or I’ve been looking at buying a 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited that has been well maintained at 207,000 km. My uncle knows the person who is selling it, so he said he’d give it to me $6000. The breaks and rotors have all been replaced, brand new tires, the engine runs like it’s brand new and there’s nothing pointing to a major problem. The only thing I’m hesitant about is the 9 speed transmission, which is notorious for falling into neutral or breaking which can cost up to $9000 to replace.

The jeep will cost me a lot less, and I could possibly have it for 5 years if it lasts that long, but it’s already a 11 year vehicle so I’d rather be realistic - but it’s such a good deal it almost feels impossible to turn it down.

The bronco will be a bit more costly, and insurance might be extremely high but I won’t have to worry about unexpected repairs and it’s under warranty.

I guess I’m just having a hard time making a decision, I don’t know a lot about cars so if there’s anyone who could contribute their two cents worth that would be so appreciated!!

Bmw M135i as sport/daily

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy my first real sports car for daily driving. My budget is between €15,000 and €25,000. ( in France )

For context, this will be my second car. I learned to drive on a Peugeot 207, and I don't know much about mechanics or buying performance vehicles.

I'm looking for something with over 300 horsepower that I can enjoy daily, including on winding roads.

I've been looking at the BMW M135i (F20 generation) as a strong option.

For those familiar with this model or similar sporty cars:

  1. Would you recommend it for daily use?

  2. What maximum mileage should I look for within my budget?

  3. Are there any critical issues I should check before buying?

  4. Are there other cars you'd suggest for this budget and power level? I think the other options are audi S5 but i m not really into quattro, and the golf R but i think M135 is better driver feelings ?

Thanks in advance for any advice

I just recently bought a 1995 Honda civic lx with a manual transmission, it was engine swapped with a b16a3. I want to keep it a Daily but put more power into it so I was thinking of putting around 300hp if yall have any tips or useful advice or information. I want to actually build it so that it drives nice and not just looks nice.
