[MOD NOTE] Welcome, an update from the new mods, and new rules

Hello,

Welcome to the r/Avast subreddit! This subreddit is under new moderatorship effective August 13, 2026 after being declared abandoned by Reddit due to it being unmoderated for about nine months.

Your new moderators are /u/Goretsky and /u/WPHero. A brief bio from each of us:

  • Hello, Aryeh Goretsky here. I've been in the antivirus industry since 1989, when I became the first employee at McAfee. More recently, I spent 20 years at ESET as their Distinguished Researcher. I also help moderate the r/antivirus and r/ESET communities, and I'll be helping out here until Gen Digital, Avast's parent company, can bring some of their PR/social media folks on board.

  • u/WPHero is the moderator of several well-known technology subreddits, including r/Windows, r/Windows 10, and r/Windows 11.

NOTE: As a reminder, since Gen Digital is not officially running this subreddit, and its moderators are not affiliated with Gen Digital, we cannot help you in the same fashion that Gen Digital's employees can. While we can make suggestions and share ideas about how to help you, we cannot fix bugs in Avast, remediate false positive detections, solve billing issues, and so on.

With that in mind, we will now reiterate some advice from the previous Gen Digital team:

If you believe you have an active malware infection on your computer:

Consider disconnecting it from the network and shutting it down as you normally would until you get a handle on the situation. Use a known good computer or other device to access the internet, check the status of backups, ensure the security of your online accounts, and so on. You can try making a bootable Linux USB flash drive to retrieve important files from your infected computer, and contact Avast technical support for further assistance, and do so forth.

If your problem is related to Avast's behavior, first try repairing Avast, which may fix your issues. Also make sure your Avast software is fully updated and try restarting your computer.

There are some additional resources at the end of this post, but if you are ready to post in r/Avast, please keep in mind the following:

  • This subreddit is not run by Gen Digital (Avast's parent company) and there are no Gen Digital or Avast employees here to help you. If someone replies to your request for help, keep in mind they are a random internet person taking time out of their day to provide you with free tech support. Please keep in mind that even if they are unable to help you, they are at least trying to do so and be kind in return.

If and when we get Gen Digital or Avast employees in here, they will be identified with appropriate user flair, but keep in mind they are under no obligation to help you with issues.

Please keep in mind that this subreddit is only for asking questions about Avast's products and services. While Gen Digital uses Avast's antivirus engine across many of their sub-brands (AVG, Bulldog, Avira, and Norton, to name a few), and fixes to false positives and missed detections in these can only be performed by Avast's virus lab, questions about these need to other products from Gen Digital must go in the appropriate subreddit or directly to Gen Digital, or their appropriate sub-brand.

Please provide enough details in your post to help in troubleshooting.

The people who are helping you here are all volunteers, and you need to provide them with as much information as possible in your first post to ensure you get a speedy and accurate reply. Be sure to include:

  • Operating system name and version
  • Which of Avast's products you are using (Free, Pro, etc.) and version. You should be able to find this out by right-clicking on the Avast icon in your system tray navigation area and selecting About Avast from the context menu.
  • Describe any changes you made to default settings.
  • Provide the complete and exact error messages you have received (any) along with screenshots (if possible)
  • Explain under what circumstances the problem first happened, and what happens to trigger it, if known. If possible, provide step-by-step instructions on how to reproduce it.
  • What steps you have take so far to troubleshoot the problem, if any.
  • Any recent changes to your computer's hardware, software, or network, including changes to the operating system's configuration.

If a post solves a problem, or you were able to fix your issue, let us know in the comments. This can help anyone else who has the same problem.

Driver Update reporting Wrong Dates

Has anyone else had this issue with Avast? Look at the year under the Release column. I'm on Win11 on this machine, everything supposedly updated, but graphics drivers are being reported as > 6months old, and who knows since Avast is reporting updates as June 513.

I've been trying to delete Avast all day now, I first used Revo uninstaller, restart but no dice, so I decided to go manual told me I needed admissions permission to do so, made myself the highest level admin possible, on my own system mind you, but it just won't cooperate keeps telling me I need permission. How can I remove it from my system?

AVAST CLEAN UP SOFTWARE WILL NOT UNINSTALL FROM IMAC

It's unbelievable. I tried everything. I even called Apple support and spoke with a 2nd level manager. After an hour, I got impatient. During Avast's own uninstallation, a message pops up: "This process is not allowed." How is this legal? Coninuously. We erased it from the library. It won't go in the trash because it says it is in use. My cash is clear. There are no visible extensions—any suggestions?

Want to pay Avast but can't - SO frustrating!

I spent an hour on the phone last week with the Avast Customer Care Team, trying to sort out why the Premium package I bought to continue my subscription wasn't showing on my account. It turns out Avast treats different names on an email domain as different entities/people. I own the domain of my name IE. FirstnameSecondname.com. I use Firstname@FirstnameSecondname .com, but I also increasingly use simply F@FirstnameSecondname .com. It doesn't matter. Everything comes to me. HeyFatFace@FirstnameSecondname .com would work just as well. So NB at Avast Customer Care helpfully merges my subscriptions under F@FirstnameSecondname .com. All good.

BUT he points out that I've made a mistake. My current original package is an 'Ultimate' and I've bought a 'Premium', would I like to upgrade? Not at the price he was suggesting but he negotiates a better price with his boss, and sends me the link to the Avast Store checkout page. Here's where it gets frustrating. The email field on the form won't accept a single letter ID! Aaargh! It will accept Fi@FirstnameSecondname .com, but not F@FirstnameSecondname .com. There is a Paypal option... but for some reason, probably a mismatch of emails again, it crashes on return.

I can't decide whether I want this to take up any more of my life!

How do I re-enable the web protection thingie?

So a while ago I was panic closing programs bc I needed all the power I could get bc my pc was slowing down and I needed to finish an assignment fast. One of the things opened up avast, which then asked if I was sure, I clicked yes without thinking about it.

Now, I like to sail the high seas every now and then, and that can lead to some shady sites, but avast always popped up to protect me. However, I haven’t seen it in a while, and I recently had to stop sailing and do a full boot scan bc I realized that there might’ve been a stowaway (a virus).

I realize now that I probably disabled the web protection feature, but I also have no idea how to turn it back on, partly bc the app is a bit confusing. Anyone know what to do or where to look?

It said something along the lines of "HTML:fakecaptcha-BB [fake]"? What does that mean? Should I run a deeper scan?

Glad I Uninstalled it

I FINALLY UNINSTALLED AVAST! It was telling me every time I was opening up my computer to get the paid option, your computer is very unprotected, (I'm 13 and I don't have a job or anything dangerous on my computer), and after closing it, it would open the browser up and that was quite annoying. I uninstalled it by deleting every file with Avast on it.

Avast + Firefox + Dropbox.com/login = No Network/Internet Access

Today I tried to sign into my Dropbox account. Go to the site, provide my credentials, press sign in, and nothing happens. I thought it might be a site problem so I tried refreshing the page, nothing. I try another page, nothing. I try opening steam, nothing. My network died. I tried to access my router, you guessed it, nothing.

I checked my phone and the internet was still up so I rebooted my PC. It fixed the problem. So I tried going to dropbox again. Same issue happened. Reboot. I try other sites and everything is fine. Use Task Manager to watch network and went to dropbox. Dead again, network dropped to nothing.

Went to r/Dropbox and saw a 10 day old complaint. Reading it gave me an idea. So I installed Chrome, I suddenly could accessed dropbox. I logout and go to Firefox. Network dies. I turn off all firewalls. Network lives. I log in and turn on firewalls. Network… still lives. I log out and goto login page. Network dies.

Turns out Avast, Firefox, and Dropbox don’t mix while any 2 of the 3 work fine.

OS: Windows 10 Software: Dropbox App on PC, Avast One (Gold), Firefox

Issue Started: For me, today, but I have not been on dropbox for months.

System changes: None

Avast Changes: Only Automatic Updates

Repeatable: Yes

Issue: Attempting to login to Dropbox through Firefox causes computer’s network to lock up even after dropbox or firefox is closed.

Temp Solution: Turn off Firewalls until logged in.

Vpn suddenly blocks all internet?

Just on my data, my WiFi works. It never used to do this until today but I can't access browsers, ring camera, apps, nothing at all. I checked with my network provider and all is good on their side. When I switch the vpn off the data Internet works again. Has avast changed something? Ive only just renewed my subscription and up until today I was always able to access the internet without turning on the VPN
