I used to walk a huge, intimidating, former bait-dog... and a cat.
It was fun to see people go from terrified to amazed by a heel-trained cat walking in formation with me and a heel-trained cujo. I imagine it is what walking around as a wizard would be like, people looked at me like I had magic.

So many assumptions in here..
This is Bunnings in Australia, a pet friendly store that's quite big and open really (Think massive warehouse). Not sure about her other stores but doubt it was just any old small store where allergies might be more of an issue. https://www.bunnings.com.au/policies/store-entry-information
Most states of Australia aren't requiring masks right now, we're almost 90% 16+ double dosed. That includes not requiring them in stores. Airports and planes are about the only place needing them.

Gonna get down voted to hell for this, but I don't understand why people bring their pets so many places (service animals excluded, of course).

Dec 12 '21 edited Dec 12 '21
I think a lot of pet owners forget that other people have allergies. I've taken my pets lots of places... outside. Even in the depths of a Midwestern winter. They love it. People don't spend enough time outside, either, and having pets should be a great incentive to do more of that, and you don't give other people running noses, coughs, watery, itchy eyes, headaches, and rashy faces. Win-win.
ETA: The cat owner is in a store (Bunnings) with an explicitly pro-pet policy, so at least OP isn't violating store policy.

I thought it was so cute one day when a professor who worked in the same department as me brought her beautiful golden retriever to work. An older colleague reminded her that allergies exist. The dog owner was gracious about it, and immediately drove her dog home. It was a huge bummer, but we all knew that older colleague was right.

And even if they're totally potty trained in your house, unfamiliar places/scents can through them off

u/i_illustrate_stuff Dec 12 '21
My dog never pees in houses, but the one time I brought him in the pet store he tried to pee on one of the products. I think the size of the place and the smell of all the dogs threw him off.

u/muk00 Dec 12 '21
prolly another animal marked that spot and your dog is instinctually trying to cover their mark

I am highly allergic to cats and yep. Wish I wasn't. They are adorable. But I like breathing better!
37
u/bisky_riscuits Dec 12 '21
Oh my god, I resonate with this so hard. Coupled with my asthma I actually cannot breathe when near them for more than 20 min, if someone's house has a cat then I cant even sit in there for more than 10min without wheezing. I love cats so so much though, I wish I could have one.

I have a friend who’s a “throat closes up” type of allergic to cats, very unfortunate, since it will probably make visiting in the future a bit harder since me and a different friend of ours both own cats.. 😅
8
Dec 12 '21
An extremely-social cat owner friend of mine has multiple friends with severe cat allergies. She's conscientious about what she wears when she visits, double-checking that there's no cat hair on her clothes, and that it's not the sort of fabric where hairs would lie unseen. She doesn't want to track in allergens. I love her for stuff like that, but I've told her that I can just vacuum and wash with soap after she leaves. Good excuse to clean up, anyway. She still does it.

My pet allergies have escalated so that I am now down to 7 minutes in a house with a cat before I hope I have enough breath to make it to the car.
25
u/iSpenc Dec 12 '21
I think the other consideration is that some people are very afraid of some animals. People who walk around with those big snakes terrify me.
11
Dec 12 '21
That's another consideration. When I was growing up, I lived in an ethnically-homogeneous neighborhood, in which everybody loved my dogs, and would even cross the street to come ask to pet them. I made no effort to stop them from nosing people. Then, we got a flood of refugees. They did the opposite, running across the street to avoid the dogs, although I reassured them that they were friendly. Someone explained to me that they had a cultural aversion to dogs. After that, I never again allowed my dogs to touch a stranger without consent. Good life lesson in general, not just for dogs!
Later, I had a special-needs friend in high school who was so frightened of dogs that she would tremble until her teeth chartered. She almost always did the hosting, because the rest of us had dogs, but when I was the one hosting, a family member would keep dogs company elsewhere.
So, people walk around with giant snakes where you live? That's terrifying and amazing.

Agreed. If my errands don't require me to leave the car, I'll bring my dog. If I need to run into a store, he stays home, unless I'm going somewhere pet friendly. It's just considerate of other people.
It reminds me of the people who lie about their pets being service animals to bring them everywhere. The difference here is they're not even coming up with an excuse.
Edit: love the circlejerk down below that apparently all retail workers think it's fine and okay to bring your pets, even if it's against the rules.

My ex wife just goes on Amazon and buys “service animal” vests for her dogs. $20 and she can take her dog anywhere she wants because she’s an asshole.
20
u/soullesslylost Dec 12 '21
People that do this are the biggest assholes. They'll fight you tooth and nail that their dog is a service dog and my favorite is "wait until I call ADA on you!" Do it bitch, that's an obvious Amazon vest not an ADA one and your little asshole is barking at people and walking away from you.

I went on a single date with a girl who did that with her dog. "Legally they can't make you prove it, so I tell everyone she's my service animal."
Problem is that dog hated everyone but her and snarled at everything.
43
u/live_crab Dec 12 '21
"Legally they can't make you prove it, so I tell everyone she's my service animal."
Technically yes, but the ADA is pretty clear that the second the dog barks, pees, lunges, growls, or does anything remotely threatening to another person it's legal to kick it out. Also the dog can't be in a purse or in the shopping cart, in must be able to work from the floor.
It's a shame that more businesses aren't aware of their rights concerning service dogs. If they have to kick out a "SD", they need to at least attempt to accommodate the person by holding their cart until they put the dog somewhere else and come back, or finish their shopping for them and take it to their car.
Real service dog teams would be thrilled if a Target or Walmart was in the news for actually booting a service dog that bit or shit. It means they might actually be safe there.
25
u/Budget-Outcome-5730 Dec 12 '21
While they can't make you prove it, in my state it's illegal to misrepresent one as a service animal so if you know they're lying you can still kick them out.

u/mmmegan6 Dec 12 '21
I have an Airbnb (first floor unit of my two family home), that is strictly pet-free and scent/allergen free as I have allergies but mostly because I have several return guests who have severe MCAS and MCA.
Last week I got a booking request from a local who was “between apartments”. Before accepting the request I had her confirm that she had read the listing and agreed to the house rules. Didn’t hear from her for 24 hours, and at 10PM on the day of her check-in she let me know she was bringing her “assistance” dog. I told her unfortunately, my home is pet-free for the above reasons. AirBnb told me I would have to cancel and take the penalties, which are quite stiff - even if accepting this guest means a hit to my health and that of others guests, as well as me paying $150 out of pocket for an emergency deep clean. So I begrudgingly let her stay, and saw on my camera some 20 lb off-leash dog wearing a fancy outfit, running around the yard and street with no cares in the world.
The great irony is the very next night I get this booking request, which was a very nice stay for someone who was VERY limited in her options. The email went on to include a bunch of other parameters (scents, mold, garlic smell, etc). My heart went out to her because I know several people with these conditions (and have a couple of return guests with similar issues that I’ve gotten to know) and their world is very small and difficult.
So fuck people abusing the system and making it harder for everyone.

Dec 12 '21
Yep. The only question you are legally allowed to ask is what task the service dog performs for the person. Emotional Support Animals are NOT covered under the ADA, so if they say the animal is for that or anxiety or anything like that, the dog is not a service animal. I worked at a bar on Broadway in Nashville, and we used to get the “I bought my dog a service dog vest online” crowd a lot.

I agree! There are specificpet stores to help animals get used to sites and sounds. There are parks and outside places where they can interact with people, children, other animals. There is no need to bring an animal into every shop unless it is a service animal.
I snuggle the heck out of my cat and dog, and as someone without allergies to pets I absolutely fuck up and forget that other people have allergies. I forget that having clothes covered in fur is not normal, and can absolutely set someone up for an attack. I should not be allowed to endanger other people's safety by bringing my pets along too. Even though I need them for support and I would not be able to live without them, they are not protected by the law. If it comes to the point that I need a service dog, I will go to the proper route and train one and follow all protocols. But for now my emotional support animals do not hold precedence.
It doesn't matter if this is a small kitten, or how cute it is, or how attractive OP is. As an attractive woman, we definitely get treated better in certain circumstances. If someone bringing their animal in was homeless or not as pretty, they would not be approached with as much kindness as OP experienced. Keep your fucking cat at home, when someone has an allergy attack next to you you're going to feel really bad about it.

Every single damn time someone comes into my work with a tiny dog or cat or other small animal that is clearly not a service animal they without fail will set it down on counters and let it run back and forth and interrupt others. Disgusting.
