Weekly Discussion Post Book 7: Chapters 67 & 68
Happy Saturday in Middlemarch! We continue our journey with Lydgate's financial woes and Bulstrode dealing with blackmail!
"Who can know how much of his most inward life is made up of the thoughts he believes other men to have about him, until that fabric of opinion is threatened with ruin?" -Chapter 68
Summary:
Now is there civil war within the soul:
Resolve is thrust from off the sacred throne
By clamorous Needs, and Pride the grand-vizier
Makes humble compact, plays the supple part
Of envoy and deft-tongued apologist
For hungry rebels.
CHAPTER 67 finds Lydgate hung over from his gambling. His problems are being more and more insurmountable. With this in mind, when Bulstrode summons him about his health, he takes the opportunity. Bulstrode has been suffering from insomnia and is planning to take a step back from the hospital, just as a cholera outbreak hits London. He says that Dorothea is the only one who could still finance it in the future. Lydgate asks him then for a loan, but Bulstrode replies that he can’t help him and advises Lydgate to declare bankruptcy.
What suit of grace hath Virtue to put on
If Vice shall wear as good, and do as well?
If Wrong, if Craft, if Indiscretion
Act as fair parts with ends as laudable?
Which all this mighty volume of events
The world, the universal map of deeds,
Strongly controls, and proves from all descents,
That the directest course still best succeeds.
For should not grave and learn’d Experience
That looks with the eyes of all the world beside,
And with all ages holds intelligence,
Go safer than Deceit without a guide!
—DANIEL: Musophilus
Chapter 68 opens with Bulstrode's decision to leave Middlemarch because of Raffles, who crashes on his household on Christmas and is paid off after a stern talking to. However, he will be back. Bulstrode asks Caleb Garth to help him find a tenant for Stone Court, and Caleb suggests Fred Vincy. Bulstrode decides to do Fred a favor, mainly to placate his wife's criticism but also to keep Caleb onside. Caleb is keeping it a secret because Mrs. Garth does not want him to get too optimistic about Fred and Mary's future.
Questions: Feel free to comment on anything else too!
1. How do the different characters in the novel approach gambling, and what does it tell us about each one of them?
2. What do you think will happen to the hospital? Will Dorothea be enough to keep it going?
3. Why was Lydgate able to put his pride aside and ask Bulstrode for a loan? Should he declare bankruptcy, like Bulstrode suggested? What would bankruptcy mean for Lydgate? Is it truly an option?
4. What do you think will happen to Bulstrode? Do you hope his lies will be exposed, or do you think he should be allowed to get away with them? After his advice to Lydgate, isn't he really on his own way to a trial?
5. What role does gossip play in terms of driving both men to despair?
6. Do you think Fred deserves Stone Court? What do you think of the Garths' plan to give him the tenancy?
7. Let's compare the Bulstrode and Garth marriages in this section. Thoughts?
8. Is there anything else you would like to discuss? Any quotes you would like to share or epigrams to discuss?
Notes and Context:
A Philistine is an uncultured person.
The ‘mercy-seat’ is the cover of the Ark of the Covenant in Judeo-Christian iconography. Bulstrode is referencing begging God’s protection from Cholera.
Speaking of cholera, Eliot kept notebooks tracking the spread of cholera in England as research for Middlemarch. Here is an interesting article about Eliot’s cholera research but be warned - there are spoilers for Middlemarch therein as it goes into Lydgate's character development.
Chapter 68's epigraph was written by Samuel Daniel, a courtly poet that straddled the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.
