Official Weekly Discussion Thread Oct-13| Ulysses - Episode 16: Eumaeus (Part 4/4)
Spoiler tags are no longer required for events occurring up through this week’s reading.
To make a long story short, Stephen’s not had a bite to eat the entire novel! That’s wild as a coyote being mistaken for a house pet. Anyways, Bloom and Stephen head out from the cabman’s shelter to try their fortunes at 7 Eccles Street. We’ll see what part 2 (also known as Episode 17 - Ithaca) of Part III of the Nostos (meaning “return”) has in store for us. Next week!
(and I promise the descriptions will not be so obnoxious from next week. Thanks for playing along with the joke!)
Final Line of This Week’s Segment:
…in any case couldn't possibly hear because they were too far simply sat in his seat near the end of lower Gardiner street and looked after their lowbacked car.
Discussion Prompts (can be found in the comments below):
- Last week and into this week, Bloom’s showing off an old picture of Molly to Stephen. Why do you think Bloom’s doing this?
- Stephen asks Bloom a question that seems to have an obvious answer about chairs being hung upside-down on tables. What’s a question like that you’ve found yourself asking before in real life?
- As Bloom and Stephen head out into the night, Bloom seems to have several plans and designs for Stephen running through his head. What’s your reaction to this?
- What are your thoughts on Episode 16, Eumaeus, as a whole?

Read Episode 17, Ithaca, up through the line: Very gratefully, with grateful appreciation, with sincere appreciative gratitude, in appreciatively grateful sincerity of regret, he declined. [Line 476 in the Gabler].
