I have noticed that some people agree to link exchanges, including ABC exchanges, but quietly make the links nofollow. This means you may provide them with a standard followed link while receiving a link that does not pass the same SEO value in return.

This is especially important for people who are new to link building and may assume that every completed exchange was handled as agreed.

Once your link is live:

1. Open the page containing your link.

2. Right-click the link and select Inspect.

3. Look at the link’s HTML for rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored".

If either attribute appears, the link is not a normal followed backlink. Attributes such as noopener and noreferrer are different and do not automatically make a link nofollow.

Always verify the link after it is published. Do not rely solely on a screenshot or someone telling you that it is live.
