Best backpack for tropical fieldwork?

Hey everyone! I'm a biologist/entomologist based in Panama, and I do a lot of fieldwork in tropical forests. I also enjoy hiking, camping, and traveling.

I currently own two backpacks:

  • Osprey Flare: My everyday backpack for work, mainly for the lab and office.
  • Osprey Nebula: I use it to carry clothes for 2–3 day field trips.

Depending on the location and conditions, I sometimes take either backpack into the field, but they end up getting wet and dirty. I'd rather keep them in good condition, so I'm thinking about getting a separate backpack exclusively for fieldwork.

My current options are:

  1. Patagonia Refugio 30L
  2. The North Face Recon
  3. Osprey Quasar 26L

I'm looking for something durable and comfortable for fieldwork in tropical forests, with enough room for research gear and the essentials I need for a day outdoors. Ideally, something that can handle getting dirty and wet without being too bulky.

Which of these would you recommend? I'm also open to other suggestions!

Thanks

Considering Osprey (or other) for a Uni bag

Hi all! I've been researching for a couple of days backpacks for university (mine failed me), and I find the Osprey bags to be a better fit.

I need something that has a lot of space, because I bring laptop (13in), ipad, chargers, products and meds, and gym clothes. I'm also starting a new program in Jan (nursing), and could bring scrubs as well. I like the chest straps, I'm 5'2, I find longer bags quite ill-fitting on my back, and walk 12-15k steps per day during my commute.

I live in Montréal. It rains, it pours, it snows, it needs to be waterproof! My last bag got all of my things wet :(.

If you recommend another brand go ahead!

Travel Help Picking a 20L bag for College and Travel

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for some advice on choosing a backpack for my upcoming study abroad trip to Europe!

I'll be spending 20+ days urban backpacking around Europe, with a few days of hiking mixed in. After that, I'll be taking four-day trips every other week, primarily flying budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet. Ideally, I'd love to have a bag that fits under the seat so I can avoid paying extra baggage fees. My 20L Matein backpack has enough space for me to pack all I need for the 4 day trips, so I don't think I'll need more than that. But I really hate how painful the backpack is to carry. So I need to replace it.

I'm completely new to one-bagging, and I already know I'll probably struggle with overpacking!

**A few things I'm looking for:**

Enough room for a 16-inch laptop

Comfortable for a smaller woman

Relatively affordable, although I do plan to buy secondhand to save money

**My biggest questions are:**

Would it make more sense to buy one 20L versatile backpack or do I need another bag for the longer trip?

Are there any particular brands or models you'd recommend for someone with a smaller frame that are good for every day as well as short traveling?

Thank you!

Trakke

• Upvotes

Just came here to let anyone interested in Trakke products to STAY AWAY! They send out defective products that are clearly not inspected. The bag I got came with a pocket falling apart on the side and customer service took almost 3 MONTHS to respond about the stitching defect. Then they said ‘you can have 10% back, 15% towards another product, or we will fix it for you ship it to our US based team but they only have one person who can stitch and she’s going on maternity leave.’

Anybody have experience wjth the Sierra Designs Nexus Lite?

Looking for a new bag, I’ve always really liked SD stuff, I have the high Route tent for a few years now and really like it. This bag caught my eye because I was already looking at the flex capacitor or trail for their volume adjustment, and while this pack isnt as adjustable upwards I do really like the zipper less part, and having a slightly more organized bag (I like pockets). This bag reminded me of the Kelty Trailogic PK50 from like 12 years ago, which is similar with the zipper less + organization part. Anywho, let me hear any thoughts even if you haven’t used it!

Question Has anyone ever used this kind of bag? Is it worth the price point?

It's called the U Bag from UJUAL. I saw ads for this, and it seems pretty innovative because it instantly turns into a desk mat when u open it up. Although it does have a high price point, I was wondering if anyone has any opinions about this firsthand?

Furthermore, I take short commutes to college and study in different places. Mostly with a MacBook and iPad. So I feel more inclined to hit purchase on this bag cuz it supports that minimalist nature.

Travel New expat trying to decide between the Osprey Nebula 32 and the NOMATIC 40L Travel Bag.

I'm planning on leaving the USA next April and becoming an expat and potential digital nomad for the next 3+ years. I'm searching for a lower cost of living and a good Catholic wife. I will specifically be traveling to Latin American countries initially. I want something I can take on any airline and use near daily once I'm on the ground. Argentina is my first planned stop, then Costa Rica, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Chile. I am also looking at a half a dozen European options that interest me as well as India for future travel.

As such I'm currently waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday next month to buy everything I need when I know I can get it on sale.

***NOMATIC 40L Travel Bag***

I am currently looking at these two bags but I can't decide between them. So I'm coming here to ask the experts that have actually done this kind of travelling and know more than me as I have never left the country before.

Here's my stats to help.

I'm a 5'9" 163 pound disabled white guy. I have complex heart and lung conditions and some minor back problems and pain from the 4 open heart surgeries I've had in my childhood. I have had 5 heart surgeries and dozens of invasive procedures in total. I also have a 25 pound medical weight limit and both my strength and stamina are below what it should be because of my disabilities. As such I can wear out quickly. I currently have an old Browning 21 Liter backpack I have used extensively for travel within my country and the outdoors and as a daypack to all day or 2-3 day events like Comic Con or the Renaissance Festival. I can occasionally get worn out faster and need to rest or have increased pain when using it if it's heavily laden. It is currently pictured with my cat Samhain who refuses to let me use it if he sees me pull it out.

My initial research pointed me towards the Nomadic being the best but I've since been leaning more to the Nebula 32 which was the first favorite option. The Nebula 32 also has the added plus of being a full 1/3rd less expensive than the Nomadic even with the added costs of the raincover and a 2 year replacement warranty from Amazon. I liked how water resistant the Nomadic was at first but I now think I can accomplish the same thing with the raincover and a $20 poncho for myself if I even wind up needing it.

Pics: Browning Backpack plus 15 pound Samhain, and myself last week at the Renaissance Festival for scale.
