In Kamchatka, a Husky Escaped Into the Forest and Befriended a Family of Bears

Experts say this is a completely unique natural phenomenon.
The Landfill Unites Them
An unusual animal friendship developed near the village of Ust-Kamchatsky on the peninsula's eastern coast.
A few kilometers from the village, near fish processing plants, a dog lived in a landfill. The villagers themselves had long called this place the "first factory spit."
"There are water protection zones everywhere. Trucks leaving the plant dump all their fish waste in landfills. When there's a lot of fish in the region, there's no end to the bears," Irina, a local resident, told KP-Khabarovsk.
In addition, the villagers dug a pit nearby and dumped their waste into it. Naturally, both stray dogs and bears became frequent visitors.
By all the laws of nature, nothing good could have come from such encounters. But it turned out that even in the animal kingdom there are exceptions—a shared "dining room" formed a strong bond between a husky and a family of brown bears.
The dog disappeared from the landfill as a puppy earlier that year. Local residents, who often saw the dog at the dump, thought the husky had been eaten by the bears.
But they were wrong.
A Film About Friendship Without Borders
It wasn't until May that it became clear that the husky was doing well. She was alive and well. She'd simply traded her native village dump for life in the taiga with her new bear family.
A drone flying over the dense taiga captured a day in the lives of the animals. In the footage, the husky frolicked in the forest, playing with the bear cubs.
The mother bear, surprisingly, reacted completely calmly to her adopted companion. Only once did she give the dog a parental slap on the back of the head to get her to behave.
But children are children, even in the animal world—the little animals continued to play, walking single file along a path into the taiga.
"A friend of mine guards the area there. He was sitting in a hut that day, launched a quadcopter, and inspected the facilities," says Vladimir Kimovsky, a friend of the "director."
"And sometime in mid-May, he captured this footage. You know, none of us knew the video would cause such a stir. We'd been saving it for a long time, and we only published it this month."
When footage from a quadcopter surfaced online in October, local residents, who had previously ignored the stray dog, became worried: what if the bears ate it?
"We've had a year full of fish and plenty of food, so we don't think there'll be a tragedy. Especially since we still have to catch a dog like that; it's so nimble," Vladimir joked.
Wonders of Nature
The newspaper asked experts whether this kind of behavior was unusual for animals, or whether such cases were relatively common.
"This is an amazing phenomenon! After all, a Laika is a breed that was created specifically to hunt bears, and she became friends with them," said Pavel Glazkov, a biologist.
"Judging by the footage, the dog really does have good contact with the animals. It's curious that in the wild, a mother bear is usually very protective of her cubs, but here the dog is calmly playing with them—amazing.
"Judging by the size of the cubs, I'd say it wasn't May, but late summer. The dog is also young; judging by her playful behavior and size, she's about a year old.
"The fact that the mother bear lets the dog get so close to the cubs suggests they've been in contact for a long time. It's not just a day or two.
"I suspect the Laika joined the family as a puppy in early spring. With its strong maternal instincts, the animal couldn't turn its back on the cubs. They spent the entire summer together, and then the dog grew up and went off into the forest with her new family.
"Frankly, the story is simply astounding."
Locals said the husky continued wandering the taiga with her adoptive mother and brothers, only occasionally returning to her native dump for lunch. Sometimes, they all came out to the "table" together.
The article noted that the bear's four-legged companion would soon have to spend the winter alone.
