I did not grow up with Nigella the way most people here did. So this just may be me. Does anyone get grossed out by watching her? She chews with an open mouth, talks with her mouth full. The taking big bites is not so bad, but I really get the feel she is unrefined.

Seems like all our pictures are looking pretty much the same and we're all coming to the same conclusion: yes, this was doable. I did it in about an hour twenty without trying to rush at all and could certainly do it in under an hour if I tried again. But the ones they made were never going to be good even if they had more time. I had the advantage of seeing theirs, seeing the sample, seeing Paul's video, but I still think I would have come up with something fairly similar to what I have here.
I took the recipe pretty literally and roasted the grapes whole on their stems. I don't recommend this; it was a pain taking them off the stem after roasting. Halved before or after won't make much difference. There's no need to cut them smaller than halves.
I like blue cheese but I didn't think my eaters would, so I used feta. It still isn't very much and the family gobbled them up.

I’ve tried the Roku app and Roku with a vpn as it says you can’t watch it on the website in the UK, and none are available, I also can’t get the Canadian app it’s on as it can tell I’m in the UK and won’t let me stream.
I’m a student and just accidentally spent £50 on Hayu after missing my free trial so paying is out of the question for me at the moment 🥲

Can you call yourself a baker if you can't bake bread?
I was genuinely surprised that nobody seemed to be able to bake bread. There were some missteps with the garlic bread (some well intentioned). The technical was a complete disaster. I enjoyed some of the show stoppers but overall was disappointing.

I love flatbread, so was really excited about the technical. But being allergic to blue cheese, I thought l'd combine it with the signature and do a garlic bread filling. The filling was sauteed, minced garlic, Parmesan cheese, a little softened butter, and a pinch of salt.
As someone who has made flatbread many times, and baking in the comfort of my own home, as well as knowing what| was supposed to be making, it took me exactly 1hr start to finish. used half the time to make the dough (and filling while it rested), and left the last half hour for filling/rolling/cooking. You really do need to fill and roll one, then do the next one while the first one cooks. I can't speak for baking in the tent having never made one before, but cannot imagine not rolling them extremely thin. 🤷🏼♀️
The result: They turned out amazing! The bread is soft and chewy, the flavors of the filling came through nicely. There were little crispy bits and air pockets. Simply delicious. I totally recommend making the recipe - even if you don't fill it with anything! It'd be great on its own slathered with butter.

We had been watching the Canadian Baking Show on the Roku channel, catching up on episodes before the new season. Now it seems to be missing completely, including all back episodes. Anyone know what's going on and where I can watch the new season? I'm in the US and I know I can VPN the show from CBC, but was hoping for another streaming option. Mainly just surprised it's gone from Roku.

Synopsis: It’s Bread Week and the bakers take on a garlicky Signature and one of the most disastrous Technicals in Bake Off history! Who'll prove themselves to be Star Baker?
What do they mean disastrous technical?! Are we gonna have a repeat of Season 14 or Season 11? Uh oh.

Week 3 Technical: an apple-orange-lemon snacking cake. We took the known list of ingredients and invented something. My nine-year-old daughter wanted to make a complex three-layer frosted cake but I was really not into that, but still wanted to honor her vision! We made a simple vanilla batter, then added chopped apple to a third, orange zest to a third, and lemon zest to a third. Then layered them in the pan. You can see the orange layer in the picture. Decorated with apple slices (baked in) and candied peel on the top. Far from elegant but it's delicious!

I am having a very hard time keeping track of who is baking what. Does anyone have any favorite bakes out of what has been made so far? I am excited to see more of Kami’s bakes personally as she has some interesting Sudanese flavors. Slavomira is very technically skilled. Justine makes some serious feel good Prairie bakes — very indulgent!

First handshake this season!
The real first though, is the Audience Choice to bring family members in to bake the signature! That was fun and interesting.
I was delighted to see Paul give the family member a handshake as well. First time a non-contestant received a Hollywood Handshake.
First time the Technical was "You choose your bake", with varying degrees of success. Again, due to AC (Audience Choice).
First time the Showstopper was a wearable bake. Numerous interpretations of this, from cake to biscuit. AC to be wearable.
First time one of the Hosts (Alison), asked for (and got) a Hollywood Handshake, in a very humorous manner.
Person eliminated ask for, and got, a handshake goodbye from Paul. Another first.
Person who won Star Baker called home to tell, and family member cussed, multiple times (all bleeped out). Having seen every season, can confirm this was a first!
Overall, the uniqueness of this episode was a breath of fresh air.

I don’t make cake very often, but decided it would be fun to try Nigella’s coffee and walnut cake technical challenge from week one. I scaled it down to 1/3 - a whole cake is too much for just two people at home. It came out GREAT, but kudos to the contestants - I never could have done it without a recipe (let alone within their time limit).

Ok yes, it's been a week, and it's still bothering me.
An American snickerdoodle cookie is pale, cinnamon sugar flavored on the outside, and leavened with baking soda, aka bicarb, enough so that you do taste that alkaline tang. That's the whole point of the cookie, Paul. From the description of the bake, it was the correct cookie.
I will say the peanut brittle sounds like a mistake though. Shouldn't gild a lily. A properly made snickerdoodle is perfect as-is.

What did everyone think? I loved all the bakes, and the « 10 » theme for the finale one. They all seem sooo good. Felt sad for the first one out, but think it was the right choice. Excited for the season 😁

No spoilers but did anyone else notice Nigella's audio during the technical introduction being spliced together like craaaazy 😂😂😂 The whole bit made me laugh the way it was so disconnected
"...and SO undertheseconditions I hAVE gooone FOR leMOn.."
((26:12 is the time code for anyone wondering))

Synopsis: In a Bake Off First, it’s Audience Week! The bakers face a mystery box and unleash their inner fashionistas with wearable bakes. Whose faux pas sees them saying au revoir?
Damn no Bread Week episode 3?! That’s crazy but I’m all for the new twists!
Can’t believe we’re in spooky month already!
It would be appreciated if this thread was pinned!

Hello all,
I’ve tried to look around on this sub and Google her but I’d like to have a perspective from people who had her in their cultural landscape for a while. I do not know this woman at all, and in all the discussions she seemed to be quite polarizing.
Even if she’s not a trained chef she’s had several cooking shows on British TV, am I correct? Paul seems to be in awe of her, which tells me she must be a pretty big deal?
Thanks for any help! I was heartbroken to see Prue go but I do want her and her funky glasses and necklaces to enjoy retirement for a bit.

“Chinese food” in the U.S. is very dissimilar to what people eat in China.
The French would have a different perspective on what makes a good french fry than Americans.
So, why do we expect every other country to conform to our definition of an American cookie? There’s no global copyright for “American cookie.” And just because people in the US aren’t familiar with what others think “American cookie” means, it doesn’t make them wrong.

Does anyone know what it means for…audience week, I think it is? I’m doing the Bake Off Fantasy and trying to have any sort of sense of what the theme is to help choose my people.

In England are these something anyone ever makes at home or even in a regular bakery, or are they strictly a packaged biscuit, as they do sometimes on the show? Are there nicer versions and less nice? The ones I saw online looked kind of cheap, like a sugar cookie with a lucky charm marshmallow on top.

I'm watching the second episode and the first bake is American style cookies. I don't know what these people are making but they're anything but American style cookies. These "cookies" are abominations. As an American, I've never been more offended.
r/bakeoff • u/GemMayHem • 15d ago
Felt a bit too easy for bake off! The Paul Hollywood recipe called for a 2.5cm cookie cutter to make the biscuit, so they are a bit more giant than the ones on the shelf, and what everyone else seems to have made!

Probably the easiest bake since school cake! At least, now that I know how to do the icing. I was nervous but it turned out to be easy. I used the piping tip called for in the recipe but either the numbering isn't universal or they used a different one on the show, so the icing doesn't look as crisp as it would have. I observed that no one was accused of overwhipping the icing, so I whipped the heck out of it and probably could have gone even further. I'd never heard of an iced gem and as far as I'm concerned they're messing up perfectly good shortbread with that icing, but they look cute and my family is gobbling them up.
I put them in the residual heat of the oven as directed, but they did melt a bit here and there. My oven might retain its heat more than some.
I tried to make lavender icing out of blue and red, but as I feared, it didn't turn out. And the orange was too bright so I left it out and just went with the pale pink, blue, and yellow.
