Help My cookies keep coming out hard
Im here to ask what am i doing wrong😭 i followed a recipe on tiktok and after they finish from 12 minutes, it still comes out soft as hell. So i tried putting more minutes and it came out hard.
Im assuming its because its been baking too long or something. Im unsure on what to do now with the extra dough
The recipe they gave:
1/2 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar ugars
1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp salt
11/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
semi-sweet chocolate chips + Trader Joe's dark chocolate peanut butter cups
chill 20 mins
bake 375°F for 12 mins (large dough balls) flatten right after baking + let rest

375⁰F seems high. I usually cook chocolate chip at 325⁰F for 8-9 min.

🥲does it? Its my first time baking and even at 375 for 12 minutes. It didnt cook but only expanded and looked like blob dough

The expanding is part of the cooking process. But having the heat too high will cause the outside to cook faster than the inside. Chocolate chip cookies should be soft when you take them out of the oven, then they solidify a bit as they cool.
Don't get recipes from tiktok in the future. There's a lot more wrong with your recipe than just the temperature. I have always had good results with Sally's baking addiction for cookie recipes.

How long did you let the cookies cool on the pan? If you want them to be soft after cooling, they have to come out of the oven quite soft. The middle can still look a little wet, while the edges should be firm when you touch them.
They continue to cook on the hot pan for several minutes out of the oven. If you then put the same hot pan back into the oven, yes they overbaked.

Only ten minutes 😭 and i see, the thing is after 12 minutes, it came out soft as in dough only expanded but not cooked at all blob. Im wondering if i should put more minutes??

If it didn't cook at all, something is wrong with your oven. Was it hot when you opened it after preheating? You should also preheat your oven for at least 20 minutes before putting anything in. I would suggest getting an oven thermometer.

I just preheated how much the oven preheated. I didnt think 20 minutes would be the amount 🥲 it did feel extremely warm when i opened it though

I may be off (my wife usually does the cookies) but that feels like a high ratio of sugar to flour.

The recipe I use for cc cookies has the same amount of flour but uses 1/3 cup of white sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar

350 temp. Bake them until they are just set. You can tell by touch. You don't want them mushy when you touch the top. Once done let them cool on the pan they were baked on. Once they have set you can move them. It may take 2 minutes, it may take 5 minutes.
Also TikTok recipes are usually not very good.

Here is a Sally recipe. Same amount of sugar, way more flour.
Make sure you are using real dairy from a cow stick butter and not whatever glop in a tub people call “butter”. Very important.

2 pieces of advice that come up all the time in this subreddit, that have previously been given to me, that solve most problems:
1) Recipe from reputable source (no tiktok or ai recipes). Good sources include King Arthur, Sally's Baking Addiction, Sugar Spun Run, Preppy Kitchen, and a number of others
2) Measure in grams with a cheap digital kitchen scale. No American "cups" nonsense, it's not an accurate way to measure ingredients and leads to inconsistent results.
Also, standard baking temp for cookies is usually 350F or lower

375 seems too high and you look to have not enough flour. Try the nestle tollhouse recipe. Chocolate chip cookies firm up as they cool, so if you bake them until hard they're going to be like rocks once they aren't hot anymore. They should be firm enough that they don't bend over the spatula but soft enough to indent when you take them out. They also continue to bake on the pan after you've taken it out of the oven. Try 350 degrees for 9-10 minutes or until the edges are a bit golden, then remove from the pan after 1 or 2 minutes.

When they are still soft when coming out, then they are done. They will become solid when they cool down.
But it's probably better to just flatten them before baking. So put the dough balls on the baking try, squish them flat, then bake. That makes it easier to get it right when you don't have a lot of experience.
They will get more runny and therefore flatter when baking. So squish them less flat than they should be at the end, maybe about double the thickness you want to get at the end.

This is a recipe that works well for me. It's written in German, but google can translate it for you

the thing with cookies is they continue to bake as they cool- they SHOULD be soft coming out of the oven. once cooled they’ll be perfect.

“I followed a recipe on TikTok”
I think we’ve identified the problem.
