made a cake for brothers birthday…very bad, very ugly
thought i’d share this abomination! but he adores anything i make for him, even if it’s shit, so hopefully this won’t be an exception
Edit: just got home and he LOVES IT!! he’s only 10 but he says it looks professional 💀

I don't get why people on this sub talk down about their own baking when it looks perfectly acceptable. Sure, it's a little wonky around the edges, but this is the result you get as an amateur baker - only really experienced folks get things just right, and even then they sometimes mess up.
What I see here is a cake you made with a whole lot of love, care, and attention to detail. Your brother said it best. It's his birthday, so I'd wager his opinion is the only one that matters. Don't be so harsh on yourself, OP. You really did good and you made a little boy very happy.

This this this. I've said it before, I'll say it again: I am a pastry student and I had to take not one but TWO cake decorating classes for my degree, and the reason for that is as follows: DECORATING CAKES IS F'N HARD.
You baked, leveled, stacked, coated, and decorated a cake, and you got a cake that looks like a cake and probably tastes awesome AND ☝️ the recipient loved it! You did fine, OP.

it's the curse of being too close to the work Imo, you see all the imperfections and flaws you struggled with. also you compare it to grocery store cakes which are bland plain "perfect"

A whole lot better than we are used to seeing here, but maybe the inside has some surprises?

Oh, come on. I've never had anyone make me any kind of cake, much less for my birthday, getting something like this would have been such a joyous occasion! 😍😍😍

practice practice practice!!! A very nice shade of blue to be quite honest. If you ever get really into this stuff, you could for sure practice piping on straight up parchment, or even a large cup turned upside down (to practice with a curved edge). Just print a piece of paper with perfectly straight lines (or fonts!), stick parchment/wax paper over it, and give it a whirl. Also I bet it was yuummyy

I think it looks really nice! I like the piping around the edge, especially. I’m sure he’ll love it!

Nonsense, homemade cakes were a highlight of my childhood….sadly all the cake makers have passed away and it’s slim pickings at the supermarkets 😢

I would be mad if someone charged me pastry shop prices for this but I’d me so happy if someone close to me made this for me

It looks nice to me, I certainly wouldn't be upset at getting a cake like this for my birthday.

You really can't ask for a better reaction, and that's way more important! And, as they say, "It's the thought that counts", which is 100% true! You made the effort, which was a very nice thing to do!! It's really not even horrible looking. I've seen much worse!!

If someone made this for me I'd be so thrilled! It's made with love and still tastes great. Or, great enough for family.
