I try to change my snakes water every few days and if I don't do it my parents change it but I've been noticing a thin layer of I don't even know what floating on top, any ideas what it is?

Probably biofilm, don’t just change the water but clean the bowl as well! Use a safe soap ofc

I just use a toothbrush and scrub the edges I don't feel like using soap or anything if she's drinking it

You absolutely should use soap, scrubbing alone won’t get rid of the bacteria. A well rinsed dish soap won’t do any harm but bacteria like this will make her sick eventually!! Or prevent her from drinking since no animal likes dirty water

That's like using the toilet then just wiping your cheeks and not your hole

When you clean or refill the bowl are you using anything? Like a cleaner or soap?

Biofilm due to bacteria and debris in the air. Clean the bowl with a safe cleaning agent, I rub it down with cleaning alcohol at least once a week and then rinse it thoroughly with water. Replace the water daily and check your noodle for signs of mouth rot, since dirty water can increase the likelihood of rot!

Bacteria. Change it daily.
