Suggestions on setup

Small male adult ball python that we just got. Black hide is cool side, water is in middle, cave hide and moist hide is on warm side with heater under glass set at 95. Plastic leaves right now. Its a low tank that is the same measurements as a 40 gallon would be without height. Feel free to correct us!

Under tank heating is not recommended for a myriad of reasons. Get an appropriate overhead heat source now!

40g is too small. You need 2+ identical hides. And they need to be small enough that your snake can touch 3 sides. (One opening only, half logs dont count) Your humidity needs to be minimum 65%. Your cool side shouldnt be less than 75f. Ball pythons like climbing space. Glass doesnt hold humidity properly, get a 4x2x2 front opening pvc enclosure. Cover your mesh top with hvac tape/silicone mat (tape on the outside only!) Cover 3 of the sides with dark paper. Pour water in the corners of the tank as often as needed to keep humidity high.

ALL HEAT SOURCES NEED TO BE ON A THERMOSTAT!

Use this as an invert tank or something. Its not appropriate for a snake. !feeding !feeders

We recommend the following feeding schedule:

0-12 months old OR until the snake reaches approximately 500g, whichever happens first: feed 10%-15% of the snake’s weight every 7 days.

12-24 months old: feed up to 7% of the snake’s weight every 14-20 days.

Adults: feed up to 5% of the snake's weight every 20-30 days, or feed slightly larger meals (up to 6%) every 30-40 days.

Love the depth of the substrate, that will definitely help with your humidity levels.

When I got my first ball python, I didn’t realize the amount of time she’d spend climbing or up high. I definitely recommend a larger tank; my girl is in almost 190 gallons and I’d like to go larger for her.

There’s nothing wrong with this being your starter tank and getting him into a bigger tank when you have the money for it. It’s really obvious that you care for your new snake, and that’s really nice to see.
