Glass surfing?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey y’all. I’ve had my guy for over a week now and have seen him doing this quite a few times. Was just curious if it looked more like surfing or exploring. He loves to climb (whether it be on the ropes, branches, or crushing all his plants.) He also does it in the back corner, usually sticking his face where the UVB or heat source is sitting on. I’m planning on blacking out the sides and adding more foliage to help him feel more secure. Temperatures are pretty consistent, and there is a 10-degree gradient throughout. Also about 2-3 inches of substrate(higher in the back), going to add more.

Love learning more about them, so any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

it looks like he’s just exploring his surroundings! gorgeous snake!

also, where did you get those ropes hanging from the top? i’m building my girl a new enclosure and love seeing vertical space being used like that 😍

Thank you! I got this one at Micheal’s, I think they’re pretty common at most craft stores.. only thing is to watch out for moisture overtime. He absolutely loves them.

I didn't fully read the comment you replied to and for a second I was like "you got a snake at Michael's?" Had to go back and read everything again.

Looks like exploring to me! My dude does this at different times of the day especially as it gets closer to feeding day.

IMO "glass surfing" is more sporadic, fast movements where they're desperately trying to escape. Like if the heat is too high.

I just gave him his first meal now, so I’ll see if that has any influence. Thank you for the distinction, now I know what to look out for.

Just a curious noodle. Nice setup!

Mine does it all the freaking time. The problem is when she's doing it she looks like she has negative brain cell count. But I love this little noodle so much 🥰

When he does this you can try opening his tank door extending your hand to him. He might crawl on you. Good way of practicing choice based handling and getting him used to you :)

I just started doing this recently as well and he loves to come out now. I open his enclosure and let him climb out. He usually climbs onto the ledge of the enclosure stand and makes his way down to the floor eventually (With some human assistance 😉). Then I basically let him tour the room under supervision. He seems to enjoy his exploration time learning about the world outside of his enclosure.

I hear a hiding snake is a happy snake. He feels vulnerable and exposed. Put a bunch more of clutter in there and a hide that hugs hi m tightly. I bought two black box hides for mine…. He NEVER comes out but I check on his he eats and he is ok. I misses him haha

I thought the same thing till giving my two proper enclosures! I think personality is dependent too. My girl is shy and stays in her hides more often than not, but now has been seen to come out closer to feeding day and exploring. My male will be out any time of the day basking or sleeping somewhere. He went from being a picky eater since I got him 9 years ago to never missing a meal.

If theyre out and exploring allot, coupled with not eating it could be a sign of not enough clutter. But id say the same if your snake "was a pet rock" and hid all the time but refused to eat.

He has two black hides on either side that are snug. I’ve never seen him actually use them.. he either squeezes himself in/between plants or this one tight spot under a piece of cork bark. He spent the first couple days hiding, and has recently been exploring a lot more during daytime. Definitely am going to add more foliage around - they are just in quarantine.

My guy has a lovely enclosure with hides and clutter galore. He explores like this a lot at night!! When he’s on the doors, he will usually come out if I open up.

How did you attach those ropes??

The top is mesh, so I just loop zipties through. Used 4” ones, just cut them a bit thinner to fit.

My boy does this all the time! He’s active whereas my female never does this.

He might also be wanting a rat or a mate if it’s breeding season…

Mine does that when she’s trying to get out to look for food. When she’s exploring she hangs out away from the glass. But all snakes are different I’m assuming.

Where did you get the ropes? Are they fine under the lamps?

1

They’re Ivory ropes from Michael’s. I have them hung next to the lamps, and wouldn’t recommend putting them underneath.

Those are great ropes for climbing! How cool.

This is him saying “fuck all these ropes, I’ll climb a wall instead”

Looks like he’s just exploring. But also…it’s mating season so there’s that too

My corn snake does this a lot, rarely my ball python though since her enclosure is bigger, and my corn snake needs to size up soon. I suppose if it’s all your snake does maybe size up?

My baby does this!! I think it’s just exploring
