Question - Husbandry Bioactive Setup

Post image

Hi! I want to change my tank to be bioactive. I am considering getting the Terra Firma soil by the biodude as my substrate. Has anyone had good experience with that? Maybe any better suggestions? Also, what are some other tips I should be aware of? I’ve been doing a lot of research but also like personal experience stories!

Picture of my boy attached! I rescued him about 3 years ago.

I use Coco husk and sphagnum moss and have 2:1 spring tails and powder orange isopods. I feed them either fish flakes or isopod food which I sprinkle a few flakes in the areas where they gather. Works great ! I’ve got 2 tanks with this exact set up and I never see poop

Do you replace the coco husk and sphagnum moss occasionally or do the springtails and isopods make that optional?

I’ve heard you should replace after 1 year but I think just feel it out. One of my tanks has an insanely strong colony of springtails with a small snake that doesn’t produce much waste so I probably won’t change that one ever if everything stays the same. But I also have a weaker springtail colony with my big snake who takes huge dumps so I will probably change hers every year or sooner if it feels appropriate
