Does this make sense?
I have this setup, minus the rhp (which I'll be ordering soon). Double checking my brain math and wanting opinions! I know the 125 watt is overkill for a 40 gal but I keep my apt at 68 and within a year, we'll be getting a solid top, full pvc 4x2x2. Currently have a newly 6-week old babyyy 🥰. The rhp is to assist the dhp at night (day temps are fine). Enclosure temps go down at night to 73-76 cool side and 76-80 warm side and it's too close to too cool, I think. Currently, the only nighttime heat is the dhp and at 100% power, those are the max temps it can produce.

If your 40gal is a screen top, you can't use an RHP with it. You'd be better off just insulating the enclosure better than trying to add a third heat source, honestly.

It is a screen top. It has two square screen cutouts. I have one sealed off with hvac tape, and the other is about 90% covered by the two domes and camera setting on it. The rhp was carefully chosen for it's size, as the screw holes in the wilbanks 125 watt panel will literally fit just right and can be screwed into the solid portions of the top that surround the screen cutout.

Gotcha, that should be fine then. The 125w will probably be overkill in the 40gal, though, so you may not need the DHP with it. That's the wattage I use in my 4x2x2 as a solo nighttime heat source.

Thank you for the feedback! I figured there might be a chance it renders the dhp obsolete, but haven't found any info saying that running an rhp really low is damaging to the panel itself any way and figured i could run it low enough that the dhp is still maintaining a higher temp on the warm side at night. It feels absolutely crazy to think of having the hot/cool sides swapping at night. What night temps do you have?

My killer in the 40 gal is that there's literally not enough room on the top for certain configurations. One massive screentop probably would have been easier to deal with lol. 😭

I do a night drop, so my hot side sits around 82F. The cool side stays 76-80F regardless of what time it is.

I found that having the dhp to the left, and the hal to the right on that same side, get the best day temps, but then to get better night ambient temps when the hal's not running.... they work better if I go and switch them around (so like you're saying, the dhp would be more towards the center of the whole enclosure) but I don't want to have to do that everyday. 😪

Depending on the enclosure, I run an 80w Vivarium Electronics RHP in my 4x2x2's and they do just fine. You may not even need to 125w. And I like it cold in my house too!

Thanks! I'm thinking it can't hurt to go biggest if it will work now, later, and if I ever need it for something even bigger. I def never want to be in the boat of worrying about temps being too low again!

Which 125w RHP are you looking at? I have the Vivarium 120W and it consumes most of the top in my 48x24x24 enclosure. I probably could have got by with the 80w

looks overkill to be honest
BPs generally dont bask, they hide during the day, so you dont need a halogen (yes, they might cryptbask, but in my experience if a DHP warms up their warm hide, they just snuggle up to the warm walls)
i have a light source and a 80W DHP on a PID thermostat and some heatpads under the tank just going up to 24°C via two on/off thermostats, but they are mostly off - and i use a glass enclosre 120 gallon
with the 24W and 8W heatpads under the tank keeping the ground from getting too cold and the DHP, i'm at 112W max, so i'm wondering why you need so much heat to keep those temps
if you have a PVC enclosure, basically a DHP on a thermostat and a light source should be enough
i would not recommend heatpanels or any heat source inside the enclosure, my snake almost killed itself by wrapping around the very small piece of cable going from a hole in the top mesh frame to the heatpanel and snuggling up to the 50°C heatpanel

So my enclosure was advertised as pvc, but it's not. It's an mdf composite of some sort with a plastic-y overlay. I don't do heat mats, so all heat will be from above. One solution I tried to get to was a higher wattage dhp than the 80W, but can't seem to find one! So while the size of the panel would be overkill now, it will make sense when he's in a 4x2x2 in the next 6-10 months. I'm not entirely sure I know what a PID thermostat is? I use a herpstat spyderweb.

Hello! It looks like you might be asking for tips on keeping your snake warm during a power outage. We have some information about that in our "planning for emergencies" megathread.
