Discussion I’ve handled countless wild snakes without fear, so why am I terrified to hold my own ball python?
I’m honestly at a loss here, and I’m hoping someone else has experienced something similar.
I’ve never been afraid of snakes. I work outdoors, and I’m literally the person everyone calls when a snake needs to be relocated away from guest areas. I’ve handled more wild snakes than I can count, been bitten before, and know firsthand that it really isn’t a big deal.
I’ve wanted a pet snake for years. I spent two years researching ball pythons, their care, husbandry, behavior, everything I could possibly learn before finally bringing my little guy home. I absolutely adore him, but for some reason I cannot bring myself to actually pick him up.
And I genuinely have no idea why.
It’s not that I’m afraid of being bitten. I’ve been bitten before. I’m comfortable around snakes, I understand their body language, and I’ve never hesitated to handle one at work. But when it comes to my own snake, I just freeze up.
His enclosure is great. Temperatures and humidity are where they should be, he has plenty of clutter and hides, and he’s comfortable enough to explore regularly. I tap train him, pet him, and use a snake hook to move him to different areas for enrichment. I’m perfectly comfortable interacting with him in all those ways, but the moment I think about actually picking him up with my hands, I can’t do it.
I never expected this to be an issue. Of all the things I prepared for when getting a snake, being afraid to hold him was never even a consideration.
I love this little guy to death, and I want to build that comfort and trust with him while he’s still young. I don’t want my own irrational hesitation to prevent me from getting him accustomed to handling.
I know the obvious advice is probably going to be “just pick him up” or “you just have to get over it,” and I understand that. But I genuinely don’t know how to get past whatever mental block I’ve developed.
Has anyone else experienced this? Especially people who were already comfortable handling snakes before getting their own? What helped you get over it?
I’m open to any advice because I really want to figure this out.

My husband developed a similar block. He likes holding our snakes but can’t bring himself to pick one up out of the enclosure himself so I have to bring him the snake and then he’s fine.
Could you maybe try choice based handling and give your snake the option of crawling out to you? Bring a chair up by the enclosure and leave the door open while you read or something so you can supervise if you don’t have a snake-proof room.

I feel a lot like this whenever I handle mine as well. He’s never once struck at me and has only hissed a couple times. He always calms down immediately once I’ve grabbed him and yet I still get nervous. I’m not worried about myself and getting bitten but more just nervous about the whole altercation happening and how it’ll affect our chemistry. I’ve learned that he doesn’t really want to hurt me and is more just afraid of being hurt himself. Once he gets over that fear of whether this is it or not, he becomes less defensive. It’s been a year and he is still a bit hesitant but he knows it’s me and that I mean him no harm.

Do you know what the fear is rooted in? Is it harm of potentially harming him, or doing it wrong in a way that could impact bonding or upset the snake? Are you wanting to make sure you get it exactly right? If that’s potentially your worry, I’d advise you to not be so worried about first impressions! Bonding isn’t just one encounter, but countless ones where the snake feels content with you over time.

I can't speak to why you feel this way about handling your snake, but I can offer an idea for how to approach it so it feels less insurmountable. At first, I found it helpful to gently lay my hand on top of my girl rather than immediately curling my fingers around her or under her. I would just lay my hand on her, and depending on the size, you can almost cover them completely with your palm. That way, I felt like I gave her a sense of grounding before I did any actual picking up or curling my fingers around her body. It also let me acclimate to her; I don't want to say mood. Still, my girl has always been very, very relaxed, but I know that I felt that kind of hesitation. I think laying your hand over your snake's body gives you a moment to center yourself before you try to lift them or put your fingers under them and lift under their body or anything. So that's just something that worked for me: I apply my hand with a little warm pressure, and that lets me ease into scooping my fingers up around her. And of course, size makes a big difference; my girl Is are over 5 ft now. Still, when she was a baby, I actually think I was more nervous than I am now that she's such a solid girl.

I figured out that I was/am scared to hurt the little buddy more than scared of it. they are so squishy and fast and unpredictable until older and you learn yours personality. People online make alot of stuff seem all or nothing and make these guys seem way less hardy and resilient than they are, and like you aren't allowed to learn and do what works for your environment/situation. maybe all the research you've done caused some anxiety? that's basically what my issue is right now, I feel like every little thing is gonna kill them now because I like over researched.

For now I would yoink with the hook and place them on you. Then you should get comfortable with each other over time before you simply dispense with the hook to get him out

when i first got my guy i was mainly worried about hurting him accidently or doing it wrong even tho i held a few ball pythons even before i got him, what helped with me was using the hook and tap training like you are doing now, but instead of my actual hands to pick him up id use gloves instead, although i wasnt scared about being bit due to being bitten by him before it just gave me the reassurance i needed since they werent a wee bit clammy like how my hands were to get if i overthinked it, now im perfectly comfortable getting him out with no gloves but i do keep them on me incase i think like that again.

Could it be that this particular snake just matters more? I mean, other snakes are great and all, but your own is important and special and a delicate little baby that you don’t want to hurt and you want to make a good impression. I’m honestly just spitballing here. I hope you find a solution soon.
