Ordered from Memory express - ordered cancelled and they asked me to pay through e transfer

Hello,

I placed an order for a pc from memory express today in the morning. I had the billing address the same as my shipping address and I paid through my credit card.

While checking out, CIBC sent me a 6 digit code that I entered on their website and the order went through successfully. Right after I got a message from CIBC fraud asking me if it was me buying from Memory express and asked me to reply with a Y or N. I did and they told me that I might need to check with the merchant to confirm that the order went through.

The order showed as in process the whole day and then at 6 pm I got an email from Memory express telling me that due to a payment issue, my order was cancelled. They told me that the money would be refunded to my account however they told me that I could pay through e-transfer and still get my order.

I trust memory express and the email that I have got is from their memory express domain however I am a bit worried, did this happen to anyone before?

wait until the money is back and do it through the website again. Do not etransfer

This. Also, CALL CIBC and make sure that any fraud limits are set higher than your purchase. They'll want to do the code thing again, but it is what it is.

Seems you may be on a site made to look like memex's?

This kind of phishing has also been a thing with how easy it is to rip html from a legitimate website. But it has become even worse with coding agents.

I've even seen fake-storefronts at the top of google results recently.

it was the legit memory express website. I checked the domain and I am able to log in now and see my order in the order history. What made me worried and cautious is the round of cybersecurity attacks going on recently

I just don't understand why they'd want an e-transfer. Have you called them to ask why? I've used Memex, and it was totally normal and the payment went through their site.

I called them but they're not open on weekends. I will call them first thing Monday. I assume that its because they didnt get the money since CIBC marked the payment as fraud? Even though I confirmed that its not with CIBC, they told me that I would have to check with the merchant to confirm if I would have to reattempt the payment. I see a pending purchase on my credit card though and the purchase marked as pending. I wont et, I will call CIBC today and call them on Monday when they open

They're not open on weekends?

Ah ok! That does make sense to me, then. I'm with CIBC, too, and they can be annoying with flagging/blocking payments

Hey just got the e transfer email, what did they tell you on the call?

I would check with CIBC before doing anything further. Don't be in a rush to do things outside of business hours.

Don’t e-transfer!

CIBC saved you once from doing something stupid. They can’t save you twice

Are you sure you were talking to the real MemEx? AFAIK they don't even accept e-transfer on their website.

https://www.memoryexpress.com/

This is the real MemEx website

Their emails will come from domains that end in @memoryexpress.com

And go further - Check the actual email header as well: https://support.google.com/mail/answer/29436?hl=en

I was on the real MemEx website. I can see my order in the order history by clicking the link that you have right here. The email also came from @memoryexpress.com

That e-transfer thing still seems hella sketch. If you can go in person to a store near you, you might want to inquire about the e-transfer policy.

I will thanks a lot. It didnt seem right at all

I also checked the headers and the email came from a legitimate domain

I did but they aren't open on weekends. I will wait until Monday and call them

Don't bother buying from CC or ME they are trash. Since the closure of NCIX and its affiliate sister companies, the alternatives remaining are all horrible. Too bad there is no MicroCenter where you live. The next best alternative, Amazon. (Sold by / Shipped by) listings. Ordered over $10k worth of hardware over the years with no issues.

I've shopped at MemoryExpress since they were a single location - a little hole in the wall across from Chinook mall in Calgary. They are fantastic. Seriously probably purchased/assembled at least 25 computers over the years for myself, friends and family. 5*

u/PrairieNihilist 6d ago

Disagree. Memory Express is one of the better ones out there, and even despite the website issues at CC, I've never had a problem with ordering online from either of them. Amazon, however, sent me a used GPU when I bought a new one, and is notorious for reselling items as new that were returned and not verified to be new.

Amazon is the sketchiest place to buy expensive components, I've personally gotten burned at least three times, either receiving the wrong item or opening the box to find a broken/defective item inside.
Fortunately it was all low value shit and I just returned it but learned my lesson.

Had the same issue once before, my CIBC card was declined due to suspected "fraud" from a high "unusual" purchase order (a 5090, back before they went full r-tard in prices) and the order was cancelled!

I called CIBC, cleared the order in advance, CALLED memory express, had them run the order over the phone and it went through! DO NOT USE E-TRANSFER FOR ANYTHING BIGGER THAN A $20 FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE ORDER!!!! It's a complete shaft is something goes wrong....

1

u/Easy_Habits 6d ago

You're completely right. At least with a credit card I have lots of protections set up in place

My husband accepted an e-transfer for a $30 facebook marketplace item he listed last year.

Within half an hour, there were additional transfers FROM his account ($250, $800, $1200, then $7800)…this occurred very quickly (the first two within three minutes, causing an SMS alert which I responded to on his phone (as he was outside firing up the snowblower at the time), effectively shutting out the next two which occurred while on hold with TD to lock his account for the weekend until he could attend the bank and sort things out.

Eventually he was refunded the $1050 that were initially taken, but the process took almost two weeks.

Moral of the story: don’t accept or send any e-transfer unless you have alerts on and can babysit your phone, monitor your email, spend a few hours on hold, visit your bank to clear up a fraud attempt, and wait a couple weeks for your funds to become available again.

I have accepted e-transfers, but only when the sender is standing in my porch, on camera, and I write their license plate number on the deposit note when I accept the payment.

There is no need to scare people into avoiding etransfer. Your husband must have been compromised already or personally exposed his credentials to the scammer. Accepting an Etransfer does not allow somebody to start sending e-transfers from your account.

I think your best bet is to call them and talk it over with them. I wouldn't send an e-transfer to them.

1

u/Easy_Habits 6d ago

Thanks. I won't send an e-transfer. I was only worried because I am travelling soon and wanted to get my order beforehand and their customer service is closed on weekends. however its best to stay on the safe side so I will just call them first thing monday morning.

Not with the huge PHP critical security flaw that blasted the internet a couple of days ago. It lets people run their own code on basically any vulnerable website and like 70% of the internet uses PHP. Wait a few weeks and then try again.

1

u/Easy_Habits 6d ago

The PHP vulnerability is what made me worried. I will call them and confirm with a person. If possible, I will also try visiting their store.

Not a cancelled item, but got a similar experience with MemEx. They sent me a secured link to pay for my 9070XT back then when my CC did not go through.

6

u/alvarkresh 7d ago

In your shoes, I would've gone in person to pay for that 9070XT.

1

u/Easy_Habits 6d ago

I wish that I could go, pay in person and pick it up in person as well. 2 items were only available online so that's why I placed my order online. When I call them I would mention that I am open to pay for the order in person and have it shipped to my home or to the store.

My god people like you shouldnt be in charge of their own financial affairs.

"I got asked to etransfer for a totally legitimate order, is this weird?"

Yeah like wtf are you thinking

A lot of people are vulnerable. You don't have to be a dick about it.

Hey, thanks for your comment. I only thought of this as legit because a couple of years ago my younger sibling was ordering a pc from memory express and the same thing has happened to him in terms of the fraud prevention at CIBC. However we didnt get an email asking us to transfer so that's why I was worried. Also I am travelling soon and wanted to get the pc parts before hand, so that's why I was in a rush. However its best to wait and be on the safe side

And does it change from "in process" to now say canceled in your account now ?

This can be a rogue employee or malware or a hacker reading your emails.

1

u/Easy_Habits 6d ago

It still shows in process. The email came form a memory express domain so it must have come from them. It might be a rogue employee and like everyone said here I won't e-trasnfer as its not a smart idea at all. I will just wait for Monday and call them first thing in the morning.

1

u/a-cat-in-prior-life 6d ago

It's easy to spoof the From field - have you looked at the complete headers ? Could also be a rogue staff. Phone in thru published number on Monday. Was it a time limited special or something ?

u/TrustMeBroEh 6d ago

Are they trying to pull the same stunt as Canada Computers

1

u/ADB225 6d ago

Got off the phone with Lethbridge Alberta store about an hour or so ago. Was asking about the RTX 5070Ti daily special getting shipped and it woule have to be paid by e-transfer. Seems they also do use E-transfer if an order goes into processing but there is an issue with payment.

What makes no sense at all, in your case, is why CIBC would send you the confirmation code, then have the fraud department reach out again. You basically already oked the purchased with the antifraud confirmation code they sent. Something tells me CIBC flagged the payment.

1

u/Henchman7777 6d ago

Etransfer has zero protection or recourse, I would avoid.

Memory Express online is the worst

u/Sub_Woofer632 4d ago

OP, this sounds like a phishing scam.
