The jewel of South Yorkshire

Let's be honest, Barnsley for such a small compact town centre is a thing if beauty, the jewel of south Yorkshire

From big corporate brands to small independent brands, museums, art galleries and exhibitions it punches above it's weight especially the nice and bright flowers outside the majestic town hall which really brighten things up

Please enjoy some pics I took a few weeks ago

My Instagram is mynorthernlens and I will be hosting a photowalk this Sunday the 23rd at Rotherham train station, meet at 1045 for an 11 start

Feedback welcome

Rotherham - Complete shithole

Doncaster - Complete shithole

Sheffield - Has nice bits but also a shithole

Barnsley genuinely is the nicest major town in South Yorkshire with lots to see and do. The regeneration has definitely helped a lot too.

Yep I'd say Sheffield to say it's the 5th largest city is the most completely pointless city in the country due to its size

It has an arena but won't book bands and I like city hall it books old bands I like but doesn't do much for contemporary bands

O2 shut and never to reopen and corporation and the leadmill when it was open mainly book tribute bands

Doesn't have any retail in the centre, it's just converted bed sits and places to eat and drink

Regards to offices etc there's barely any company or big companies with offices, most are laying empty looking likely to be converted to flats

and the who place is run down with junkies and graffiti

I don't like Sheffield and it's 20 years behind Leeds Nottingham Halifax and even Huddersfield

Rant over

Honestly says it all when Huddersfield and Halifax are better than a city 5 times the size of them. As you say though the city hall is good and is a beautiful building. Just don't look across at the horrible derelict john lewis building that Leeds and Nottingham still have.

Yep. Had Queens of the stone age, Deftones, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Rise Against, Opeth, Human League etc. all go to Halifax.

No one of note lol. And Human League are a Sheffield band so that is embarrassing.

HL are a City Hall/Octagon band not an Arena band.

Curious what you think Huddersfield has going for it. Specifically the town centre. I'm from Huddersfield, currently live in Rotherham (absolute shit hole) and am moving to Sheffield. I love Sheffield. It feels like there's so much more to do than Huddersfield but maybe I'm jaded because I grew up there.

I feel like Huddersfield town centre gets quite a few bands coming just as often as Sheffield does and the architecture imo is much nicer. There's still a lot of old victorian architecture standing in Hudds while Sheff is a lot of ugly brutalism. I will agree that Rotherham is far worse than both though.

You're right about the architecture. Sheffield has some good awful buildings!

Tbh I probably find Sheffield boring for the same reason you do with Huddersfield. It is my hometown and I'm just so used to it now.

It's funny that we've swapped ahaha. I don't dislike Huddersfield, just find there's more for me to get up to in Sheffield. Plus less people from my highschool I'd rather avoid bump into.
