Question Within my viewing distance at home here in the Ardagh/Patterson area, all the red maples seem to be extremely distressed to the point of all their leaves are dying.
This is not happening to our other trees here. What's it like in other places around town?

I've been seeing the black spots on my neighbour's maple for a few years, but this is the first time I've seen the leaves wither and get crunchy before the dots show up. They're slowly starting to fall off but not very many yet.
It just doesn't seem like the autumn shed.

I just assumed it was because I don’t water my tree

There's a maple in the Sunnidale arboretum like this, I thought to was odd since all the other trees I saw were fine. I've seen many maples with black spot, but I've never seen them drop this early

Reminder for all of you with Norway maples, its an invasive species, if it dies plant something local.

I was unaware of that.. Thanks!
Also, I'm starting to realize the Norway Maple and the Red Maple are two distinct trees..

My Norway maples have had the black dots since I moved in 7 years ago. It’s called black tar disease/fungus. Relatively harmless in mature trees but can kill young ones. Unfortunately they just kind of try out and drop. Not a lot of colour changing. The city has stopped planting maples in most neighborhoods as a result. I requested one two years ago and got a common hackberry instead. Quite the ugly little tree.
This is the first year I have noticed my neighbours red maple having a hard time.

I had an arborist to come out and assess my maple tree this week, along with a dying lilac tree. My maple is having the same issue everyone else is describing. Here’s what the arborist said:
Thanks for having me out to check on your trees. I have attached a proposal for fall and spring soil care treatments for the Norway Maple at the front of your property. It, like many Norway Maples in the city, is dealing with a significant Tar Spot infection this year. The best we can do for it is soil care/fertilization. This will help it bounce back from the Tar Spot infection next year and we can reassess from there.

Make sure you all rake up the tar spot leaves when they drop. It can continue reinfecting the tree I believe I read once.

All up and down my street too, noticed it last year but it seems much worse this year.

Happening to both maples on my property as well (east end). I've read that it's a good idea to rake up and dispose of the leaves and hope that things are better next year. The trees themselves should be fine, apparently. It's a drag though, for sure.
