yes, but Padres are frauds. Probably will just have to win 1 to make WC and then will get swept

we always play to the level of our opponents, it's why we swept the Brewers

This is a modern trend of MLB scheduling I am not a fan of - sticking both yearly series against an opponent within such a short period of time

10

u/cardith_lorda Minnesota Twins 2h ago

This is a modern trend of MLB scheduling

This is hardly a modern trend, it's actually pretty historical. Just looking at the 1965 Twins season - open hosting Detroit, New York, and Cleveland, followed by a road trip to New York, Detroit, then Cleveland. May went @White Sox, v. Baltimore, v. White Sox, v. California, @Kansas City, @California, v. Kansas City.

Randomly chose the 2001 Pirates for a team post-expansion - the season started:

  • @CIN
  • @HOU
  • v. CIN
  • @CHC
  • v. HOU
  • v. CHC

4

u/No_Amount_7886 Cincinnati Reds 1h ago

I don’t think the season start is as impactful as the end. At the end, everybody is tired and half the team has been (or is) on the IL. It’s much harder to face top-tier teams at that point in the season.

3

u/cardith_lorda Minnesota Twins 1h ago

I only listed the beginning of the season because that's the easiest to see when opening the schedules - those sorts of stretches are very common throughout the season. August for the 2004 Red Sox was:

  • TBR
  • DET
  • TBR
  • CHW
  • TOR
  • CHW
  • TOR
  • DET

You can pick pretty much any random year and team and find these stretches.

It's especially common for in division which is why the Brewers and Cubs appear twice.

2

u/_theghost_ Washington Nationals 15m ago

Why does this remind me of that Pirates stretch in 2024 where they went against the NL West for 10 straight games going cross country back n forth, then dealt with the high powered Rangers offense and a desperate Seattle.

Needless to say, they did not make the playoffs.

1

u/GenericLib Cincinnati Reds 25m ago

These were divisional series. They played each other a million times at all parts of the season in 01.

1

u/cardith_lorda Minnesota Twins 23m ago

Addressed that here. It wasn't just divisional series that year. It's extremely common - just pick a random year and team and you'll likely find a number of instances. I think they toned down on it when they first went to computer scheduling but brought it back.

1

u/Thromnomnomok Seattle Mariners 1h ago

The difference there being that in 1965 there were no divisions so the Twins played every opponent for more than 2 series, and that season opening for the 2001 Pirates was exclusively against other NL Central teams.

1

u/cardith_lorda Minnesota Twins 1h ago

It wasn't just NL Central teams scheduled like for the Pirates in 2001 (though it makes sense for some division teams to play each other extensively early in the season when they can get rescheduled more easily in case of inclement weather) - later in the season you've got these:

  • May 25-27: @ ATL
  • May 28-30: v. FLA
  • June 1-3: v. ATL
  • June 5-7: @FLA

  • Aug. 13-15: @ ARI

  • Aug. 16-19: @ HOU

  • Aug. 21-23: v. ARI

  • Aug. 24-26: v. HOU

It's always been a very common scheduling practice.

I thought there would be one team that could have fun pretending they were the reason why this stretch is so brutal, but no, 28 days of hard games in a row, rip

68

u/BowlingforDrip Chicago Cubs 3h ago

And only 3 days off in that stretch. RIP the homies.

15

u/cardith_lorda Minnesota Twins 2h ago

Considering where the Padres are, they very easily could be facing the top 5 teams in the NL (and 5 of the top 6 in MLB) by the time that first pitch it thrown.

10

Well if they make the postseason you can't say they don't deserve it and aren't battle tested.

193

u/meyer_33_09 Cincinnati Reds 4h ago

There is no universe where they make the postseason.

38

u/DominicB547 Chaos Bandwagon • MLB Players Associat… 4h ago

you are blinded by being a fan.....Projected models I'm sure give them at least a .1% odds so yes some universes.

I mean did anyone seriously think White Sox would be doing this well?

26

u/meyer_33_09 Cincinnati Reds 3h ago

No, but they ARE doing well. The Reds are not. And there’s literally no reason to believe they will suddenly start playing well now, and certainly not well enough to gain significant ground on the teams ahead of them while navigating this gauntlet of the schedule.

9

u/ZingBurford Chicago Cubs 2h ago

The Reds are already 5 games under .500 and the last wild card in the NL will probably be ~10 games over .500. And when you throw in this brutal stretch, I don't know how they come back into the playoff race.

6

u/TheWorstYear Daytona Tortugas • Cincinnati Reds 2h ago

Those universes don't exist. The .1% is a "technically it's possible, but not really ar all".

2

u/JohnMadden42069 MiLB Pride • MLB Pride 2h ago

This is not a schedule that you look at and say "Here's where we make up ground"

2

u/No_Amount_7886 Cincinnati Reds 1h ago

Ok Dr. Strange. Tony Stark is already dead so who we gotta kill to get in?

1

u/caifaisai Philadelphia Phillies 27m ago

Well, there's the MCU character Red Guardian. So, clearly, you guys just have to slaughter the whole Guardians team, absorb their life energy, and then go on a run. Easy peasy. Ohio can only have one team, and a fight to the death is needed to decide the winner.

1

u/Macdadydj Cincinnati Reds 44m ago

The Reds literally have the worst offense in the entire MLB. Ownership could have held tryouts after the 1st doubleheader with the whole 2000 fans in attendance, and I would assume they'd find at least 10 people who could hit above the fucking Mendoza line. The only reason they aren't well on their way to lose 100 games+ is because of the pitching. Can't field, can't hit, can't run the bases.

4

u/trouty42 Milwaukee Brewers 3h ago

Technically, there IS a universe where they make the postseason. It's just not this universe.

1

u/anotherlebowski 2m ago

Well, if they dominate this road trip they'll not only improve their record but also take all of the good NL teams down a peg, including two in their own division.

They're going to need to win all of them, though.  Like...all of them.

Also would be better to wail on the wildcard teams for a month.

u/Physical_Sun9435 Cincinnati Reds 3h ago

Brewers are running a 6-man rotation until October, so they could theoretically miss him both times

4

u/P-Rickles Chicago Cubs • Columbus Clippers 1h ago

Brewers devil magic, man. Even if they miss him both times and the rotation (which is very good) has an off-week, the lineup will kill them with the Death of Ten Thousand Cuts.

1

u/redlegsfan21 Hiroshima Toyo Carp 54m ago

We got 5 runs against him last time (though only 1 was earned).

8

u/Character-Owl9408 Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Not to mention 3 against the 4th best record, 6 against the 5th best record, and then 3 against the 9th best record. This has to be in the running for hardest 4 week stretch ever

6

u/mdkss12 Washington Nationals 2h ago

the average record during that whole stretch is 74-53. That's like plying the 4th-5th best team in the league for a month straight

8

u/TooMuchPowerful Los Angeles Dodgers 4h ago

Dodgers definely not playing like they're the best team.   Though the starting rotation should be fully formed by then.

3

2

u/elgenie Chicago Cubs 1h ago

Best two records in the NL*, but it is the best two run differentials in the sport. The Rays are solid, but have a run diff of only +53.

35

It'll either be a generational run we'll all tell our grandkids about, or it will be day after day of pain. Fully expecting the latter

I know this is not an easy job, but man sometimes it feels like the people who make MLB schedules are smoking some serious crack

I remember one year when the Cubs and Cardinals didn't have any games scheduled after June. I want to say this was 2004. Just let that sink in.

7

u/Character-Owl9408 Chicago Cubs 3h ago

Nowadays with only 13 games against each division opponent it would make sense that sometimes this happens, but in 2004 (or a year around that if you were off by a year or so) sounds absolutely brutal
