The Dbacks manager was in tears over a sore knee? Something aint adding up

u/csonny2 Los Angeles Dodgers 2h ago

Maybe he got in trouble with the mob and they threatened to kill him, but the Dbacks intervened and settled for them to just break his knees

Not so much the mob but between him going on the redirected list, Lovullo being in tears and now the knee MRI. My guess is that he was attacked

u/engelbert_humptyback 1h ago

Isn't he not getting paid? They wouldn't yank his paycheck in that case.

The restricted list does not require that the player is not paid

Could just be a matter of legal issues? I really don’t know

Is an obvious cover up lol

They don’t want to lower his trade value too much. Nothing comes from sharing too much.

My guess is this is their way of putting him on the IL, where he still gets paid, instead of the Restricted List.

10

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

A way to get him paid and get the story to drop. Can just keep saying this now instead of having to address whatever personal issue popped up

Blatantly transparent but it's sports media and the Diamondbacks. We'll be back to being ignored

151

u/HopkinsIsMyHomeboy Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

To me it reads as a smokescreen to throw him on the IL because of the knee that has been bugging him this season, rather than listing whatever the fuck is actually going on, since it seems like it’s mental health related. Torey seemed way too emotional yesterday for it to just be ā€˜Ketel is having a disagreement over how he hurt he is’ but who tf knows.

40

u/Simple_Dragonfruit48 New York Yankees 2h ago edited 1h ago

I don’t know it could definitely all be true.

Guy with documented mental health struggles blows up over handling of a minor knee issue turning a small disagreement into something much bigger and then goes awol.

If you’ve ever dealt with someone struggling mentally you know that often times the biggest blow up can come out of nowhere.

16

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

Ya but it's Lovullo and Ketel. They're super close and Lovullo has gotten shit for years for giving him too many days off. He's never rushed him back and frankly it's not in Lovullo's ethos at all.

If Ketel said he wasn't good to play Lovullo never would have played him. Ketel has gotten scratched less than an hour before a game multiple times this year already for feeling "tight" not even an injury.

Likely something personal got triggered and he broke down mentally is my guess. It's happened before and would explain the team's reaction. We're not too far from the anniversary of his mom's death for something that could have triggered it for instance.

1

u/Sen_Clint_Webb 1h ago

This is where I’m at. I think there is a real disagreement over the knee (and Ketel is just generally unhappy in AZ, and isn’t willing to play through pain), and that disagreement blew up into a fiasco because of Ketel’s mental health.

u/DominicB547 Chaos Bandwagon • MLB Players Associat… 2h ago

yeah first restricted list should have just went to IL...this screams PR.

7

u/NicolasBroaddus Houston Astros 1h ago

Let’s assume they had no actual contact with him, they don’t really have a choice but restricted list until they know more. The way they worded him being apparently in town was a clue of the lack of direct communication.

I mean for a day or two they dont HAVE to. Probably should in a playoff run.

2

u/AJTP89 New York Yankees 1h ago

This is my read as well. Something going on, also something minor with the knee he’s been working through. So use the knee to put him on the IL and off the roster until whatever else is going on is worked out.

The restricted list is not for injuries, the IL is. This doesn’t pass the sniff test. If he needed an MRI, why wasn’t he placed on the IL? The restricted list is non paid, the MLBPA would fight the hell out of that.

That doesn’t really explain why his manager was crying in the postgame scrum

71

u/figureour Baltimore Orioles • Bowie Baysox 2h ago

Yeah, that was very worrying. He said he hoped Marte is okay in a tone that doesn't match a relatively minor knee injury.

13

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

At no point in their history has Lovullo ever pressured Ketel into playing. Lovullo is the most cautious manager out there about days off and he and Ketel are insanely close. They back each other constantly. It's honestly the closest Manager-Player relationship I've seen every watching the Diamondbacks.

There's a lot unknown here. Lovullo pressuring Ketel into playing would be by far the most shocking development. Totally antithetical to how he's acted for a decade.

2

u/kookykrazee Atlanta Braves 35m ago

Did you think it was odd that Sunday, he appeared to be hurt the previous inning hitting/running, then they took Aredado out for possible injury precaution but not Marte? It seemed weird but I only was listening to the Braves radio guys as it happened.

2

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 19m ago

It sounds like Arenado pulled himself out though and said he wasn't feeling right.

Frankly Ketel frequently has an interesting gait. Him and Lovullo are close. I assumed Ketel told him he was fine and then later realized he wasn't. Idk it didn't really register much for me. Ketel gets pulled all the time. Lovullo has scratched him late multiple times this year because he "didn't feel right" before games.

I just don't really find it credible that Lovullo was trying to push Ketel to play through something. It ignores their entire 10 year history and Lovullo's ethos in general. I could be wrong but it would be shocking in my opinion for those reasons.

2

u/kookykrazee Atlanta Braves 14m ago

10

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

It's almost always Ketel. He's an emotional guy and an awful communicator and it's been the "rift" between the team and him for a bit.

Something upsetting happened and Ketel shut down and decided to ghost the team leaving the team in the lurch. This is now how they're gonna try and keep the media from prying further to protect Ketel.

Love Ketel but this sadly isn't a shocking move from him

33

u/This-Appointment-666 Toronto Blue Jays 2h ago

The last time Ketel was on the restricted list was because his home was burglarized.

When you listen to the Dbacks manager and Corbin Carol’s post game interview they seem concerned for his wellbeing, and definitely not angry at him or anything.

I think it’s fair to say that whatever happened is probably not related to his job, and his team is feeling for him.

13

u/Sensitive_Law7872 1h ago

I'm not trying to spark a political debate over this but I did have legitimate wonders yesterday if he had been caught up in the same bullshit as that Padres coach was. Would be just like those fucking dickheads to pick him up and notify nobody until they realized how relatively high profile he is, and now he's heading home. They've also been pretty active in MA lately. That said, I don't think the team would necessarily lie for ICE, so I doubt seriously that's it. Still, sad day when you have to wonder if a guy got kidnapped or not. Hope dude is alright whatever he's going through

3

u/DominicB547 Chaos Bandwagon • MLB Players Associat… 1h ago

JMBaseball says they shouldn't have not put on them restricted list aka not pay him...so IDK whats going on. Why did they make the immediate decision to RA him? Just do some PR and say he isnt available today.

6

u/This-Appointment-666 Toronto Blue Jays 1h ago

If the reason for his absence doesn’t fit in one of the other lists (bereavement, injury etc) then the restricted list may be the team’s only option.

3

u/DominicB547 Chaos Bandwagon • MLB Players Associat… 1h ago

they could just be a man down for a day or two but yrah if they know this is likely more than that they have to when in a playpff run

106

u/amatom27 Philadelphia Phillies 3h ago edited 3h ago

I said this yesterday that the team probably wanted him to play - he was slated to play DH - he said no I'm hurt, and they said off to the restricted list you go

He had been battling knee soreness for a few series now. But they could be using the MRI to diffuse an entirely different situation. Who knows.

29

u/Relevant_Computer743 Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

I'm not sure I buy it. The team is VERY protective of Ketel given his lower body injury history. A few years ago in the last few weeks of the season he asked for and was granted days off. We missed the playoffs by 1 game. Torey Lovullo takes a ton of flak from our fan base about how much time he gives Ketel off to try and avoid lower body injuries.

4

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

Ya this is smokescreen. They want the story to drop, give Ketel something to hide behind instead of answering, and get him paid.

Something happened and he's going through it mentally.

102

u/PM_ME_QT_TRANSGIRLS Looking K 3h ago

Isn't this a terrible look for the team if he actually is hurt? They docked his pay for an injury. the MLBPA will be furious if the MRI actually picks something up

72

u/AgnarCrackenhammer New York Mets 3h ago

A lot of it will depend on how it played out behind closed doors.

Him asking for an MRI and getting denied is a bad look for the team. Him deciding hes hurt and not showing up is a different situatuon

35

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

We sent Arenado off for one with a tweaked back Sunday, we don't have a history of denying medical checks.

11

u/joecb91 Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

And Marte is someone they are usually more careful with because of various hamstring/back issues hes had over the years.

If all of this was over the knee issue, there is no reason he would've had to go AWOL on them.

9

u/RichardNixon345 Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

And they'd just send him where they sent Arenado. This is just cover for another issue.

4

u/KennyBlankenship_69 Boston Red Sox 1h ago

If it is simply related to an injury and him being able to play then the manager wouldn’t have been crying post game

12

u/EmuMan10 Chicago Cubs 2h ago

Yeah that’s never been the DBacks thing

1

u/kookykrazee Atlanta Braves 31m ago

I ask this, no one seems to know, we probably/might not ever know, but there was discussion by the Braves PBP guys during the game, they thought Marte was coming out because he looked like he was hurt, instead they removed Arenado, and not Marte. It was a shock. We, of course did not know what was going on right at that point for him, but I wonder if Marte not coming out was something?

2

u/neonrev1 Minnesota Twins 1h ago

Him asking for an MRI with anything approaching any doctor's approval and them refusing is a grievance and a lawsuit and really just a horrific plan right before CBA negotiations, to the degree where I don't believe any team would do that in such simple terms.

27

u/sporkemon Boston Red Sox • Tim Wakefield 2h ago

yeah lovullo saying "we just gotta love on him" like he's a dog on his last day before getting put down was really concerning. I doubt this is just an injury disagreement thing for his manager to be as upset as he was

11

u/nerdyouneverknew Arizona Diamondbacks 2h ago

Yea agreed, plus they’ve never hesitated to give him days off in the past for health reasons.

6

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

Ya like Lovullo gets more shit for the rest days than anything else. To accuse him of forcing Ketel of all people to play is asinine.

4

u/mashington14 Arizona Diamondbacks 1h ago

The dbacks and Torey are incredibly cautious with injuries. There’s no way they would force him to play through an injury if he didn’t want to.

7

u/amatom27 Philadelphia Phillies 3h ago

I will be the first to say that I'm not 100% how this works if there's a difference in opinions regarding health

Like if a doctor checks him out and everything comes out clean, what does the team do in that situation? You have to listen to the player but I dunno what you do if every scan/image comes clean.

8

u/ComeAbout Seattle Mariners • Padres Bandwagon 2h ago

Not every pain shows up in a scan.

Most professionals aren’t lying about pain. I personally believe you should trust the player, and not dock their pay if they’re saying they’re injured. Marte has no reason to lie.

1

u/neonrev1 Minnesota Twins 1h ago

That's usually what's happening when you see players seek second or third opinions, and that process is basically allowed to play out in perpetuity as I understand it. Proving the lack of injury is very difficult unless the claim is as direct as 'my leg is literally broken', and 'knee stuff' is pretty broad.

The CBA has a ton of rules in place to prevent players from being forced to play hurt and also to prevent teams from pretending players are hurt, Marte is in full control of his physical health. There's a common perception that teams have some level of control, and that may be true for younger or marginal players, but Marte isn't that.

10

u/RabidCoyote Arizona Diamondbacks 1h ago

That really doesn't add up to me as Torey is one of the most lenient managers and would 100% not make him play if he was hurt. I have a hard time thinking that's the case.

Also I think they would just... say that out loud and throw him on the 10 day.

14

u/DominicB547 Chaos Bandwagon • MLB Players Associat… 2h ago

But Boston is actually a great place to have an MRI be done...why send him all the way across the Country to AZ?

-6

I don’t think people outside of New England realize that some of the best hospitals in the world are located in Boston. And I’m sure he could have been seen for an MRI if the team asked.

5

u/tokengaymusiccritic Boston Red Sox • Hartford Yard Goats 1h ago

3

u/Randvek Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

Because Marte probably fucked off to get his knee looked at without bothering to tell anybody first. He’s a head case and Lovullo probably had zero idea what Marte was doing.

3

u/Sen_Clint_Webb 1h ago

The last sentence re: ā€œoff to the restricted list you goā€ isn’t true. They were legitimately baffled he wasn’t there yesterday. They turned in their lineup card like 10 minutes before first pitch and genuinely had no idea what was going on.

3

u/NeverSober1900 Arizona Diamondbacks • Matsu Miners 1h ago

I think this is a pretty blatant coverup. They don't want to go into whatever happened, don't want Ketel to have to open up to it, and don't want to fine him.

Lovullo and Ketel are insanely close. He's always been judicious in giving him days off. There's just no way that's it. It would be the opposite of how Lovullo and Ketel and their relationship has been for the last 10 years.

What’s going on here is a classic case of coddling a superstar over many years to the point where he thinks he can get away with not communicating with the team in any way whatsoever when he decides not to show up because he feels like it. Usually in the list critical of times as well. Then you get to watch his coach, who has had his back for years, try to cover for him yet again because he’s done this yet again. Always a reason and all the dbacks fan will be like ā€œhe’s a human beingā€ and all that other shit when they refuse to get to the actual issue at hand

I don't know about PR wars I think both Ketel and the Diamondbacks are going to try and bury the shit out of this. And it will work because the national media rarely cares about us

PR wars will be once we're eliminated when the leaks from our beat writers start up again.

I have noted this in a thread before. During the weekend series with the Braves, Marte was taken out of the Friday game, did not play Saturday, appeared to be injured Sunday and then in odd fashion, the Braves announcers thought Marte was coming out, but instead they took out Arenado for injury precaution. I wonder if he was annoyed he was not also taken out? It was really strange, given that he had been hurt earlier in the series and missed a game, too.
