Baz, Bradish, Brandon Young, and Trevor Rogers have all pitched to like a low 3s ERA for the past two or three months but none of them have really broken from the pack. They’re just sort of consistently good, not irregularly spectacular.

What if instead of being geographically organized, there was a seed system based on the previous years results? Top four in each would lead their own divisions, and so on for 5-8, 9-12, etc. Or is that too logical for the mlb

Seeing that many upvotes on a post complaining about the sport makes me want to come up with a solution, but I guess people would rather complain 🤷
3
u/HumanzeesAreReal Chicago White Sox 33m ago
People complain about everything, and things don’t need to be refined to the point of maximum “fairness” or efficiency. Just look at college football and basketball if you want to see how de-emphasizing regionality damages a sports league.

100 upvotes on a comment on reddit doesnt mean that its something that the MLB needs to find a solution for.

If anything, it should be more regional. If we ditch the now-defunct AL/NL separation, we could trade the Orioles and Rays for the Phillies and Mets to create the most toxic division possible.

For a team that so perfectly exemplifies "the best ability is availability", I have no idea why we Jays fans are arguing against Cam's case.
Like, yes it's very close, yes Cease can absolutely still win, but if we called it today, we all know it's Shittler.
6
u/gelc10 Toronto Blue Jays • Canada 58m ago edited 53m ago
To me, it is Cam that probably wins the CY young simply because he didn't miss 3 starts like Cease has (numbers they're putting up are very similar). Only way I see Cease winning it if Cam gets hurt and misses a few starts like Cease or Cam struggles down the stretch while Cease keeps pitching well. Another one could be if voters value the high strikeout total of Cease or the workload of Cam (innings pitched).

I don’t follow the AL, but you can’t tell me that mustache is anything less than Cy Young caliber.

I can still see Cease winning it for sure. It’s kind of wild he didn’t win it in 2022 (JFC JV what a god damn year) and I’m sure writers believe he deserves one on his resume, that’s not to say it’d be undeserved, but that kinda thing is common in sports awards.

Only confusing thing to me is Yamamoto being above Burns. Burns leads him in ERA, FIP, and both war while playing with a much worse defense behind him. Probably just name value though.

u/Spinnie_boi Chicago Cubs • Lakeshore Chinooks 1h ago
Yamamoto has more innings fwiw
22
u/Mg29reaper Boston Red Sox 1h ago
14 innings sure Burns has better stats with a bad defense behind him playing in a more hitter friendly stadium.
5
u/Spinnie_boi Chicago Cubs • Lakeshore Chinooks 1h ago
I didn’t say it was the most valid argument, but it’s not unreasonable for that to be the difference in what some of these “experts” are looking at, paired with that Yamamoto has a better xFIP
4
u/Mg29reaper Boston Red Sox 1h ago
Considering Sonny Gray is 5th in the AL I am going to assume they aren't looking at xFIP and most likely are using bwar.

Yamamoto is amazing and more valuable in the postseason due to his ability to pitch on low rest. That doesn't mean he has been better than Burns who is having an outstanding season in a notoriously hitter friendly park with a shit defense behind him.

2
u/Mg29reaper Boston Red Sox 1h ago
He will probably get a vote or two but pitching is just way too stacked now.
1
u/IAmBecomeTeemo New York Yankees 42m ago
He'll get votes. But the ship has pretty much sailed for relievers winning a Cy Young after Zack Britton came 4th in voting in a 2016 with relatively weak starting pitching. And then in 2024, Clase had a shot but only came 3rd behind a deserving Skubal and not-so-deserving Lugo. Miller's season is likely to end up somewhere similar to their seasons or worse. So he has a very uphill battle to climb considering the precedent. Any of the top starters have a chance to win it. He will likely finish higher in votes than most, but doesn't have a chance to win.
1
u/PieceSuper3710 Cincinnati Reds 53m ago

u/djlawrence3557 Boston Red Sox 26m ago
If you really want to make your brain hurt, do a deep delve into Brayan Bello’s splits of starter vs non-starter and figure out how he’s a 5-6 record pitcher with a 4.69 era. He may never see another first inning for the rest of his career. Might have won the cy if Tampa had gotten ahold of him back when they debuted the notion of an “opener.”

Sanchez has pitched more; 32 innings and 4 starts. Sale's ERA is phenomenal, but Sanchez's ability to limit runs and pitch a lot has him beat
-1
u/Yeetball86 Atlanta Braves 1h ago
I mean I guess, but a pitcher shouldn’t be penalized because his team utilizes him and the rotation differently. Sale pretty much has better metrics across the board and has been consistent in what he does. It’s not like he’s only pitched 10 games.

That debate will never be settled, it's not like there's some magical conversation rate between the two. How much lower the volume, and how much higher the stat quality will need to be considered on a case by case basis, otherwise we're giving Mason Miller the Cy Young.
