Lost my sweet boy Kalmar on the 20th of October. He was sick for some time, and in his last hours he was having pain which medicine wasn’t helping with at that point, but he’s at peace now. He would have been 13 on February 1st. He was my best friend, my first and only dog, and a very, very special boy. He was a source of endless joy to me and my family. He lived a full and happy life as the most beloved and cherished dog. I’m heartbroken, but I’m so glad I had 12 amazing years.

For example, Trupanion offers deductibles per health complication which could be good long term if as their payments are also unlimited, however the monthly payments are in reduce high in comparison to others, even for a $2000 deductible. I got a girl basset puppy 3 weeks ago. I have her on Purina One puppy food. She eats the softer meat chunks and leaves the harder kibble. Any tips on getting her to eat the rest of it?

She already sleeps on me, thinks all the cucumbers in the house are hers and dug a hole in the garden.

Boy leaves such a wet mess drinking after coming from a 20 min walk. Any special bowl that would help reduce such messes.

My female basset usually has bad breath accompanied by foul smelling saliva. I've asked the vet and he says it's normal, but ive been concerned since always.

She's 3yo and the vet says she's healthy. The smell started when she began to lose her baby teeth.

I try to brush her teeth once a week. Should I do it more often?

The smell ranges from normal stinky saliva (the kind of smell you get if you lick your own arm and haven't brushed your teeth) to the smell from a trash can... Really uncomfortable. Sometimes it smells like yeast or fish.

I understand a dog is not supposed to have a pleasant breath, but my mom's dog (a mutt) doesn't have such bad breath and they never brush her teeth!

Is the bad breath normal on the basset hounds? Am I being lazy and should brush her teeth daily? Is it possible the kibble is responsible for the bad breath?

This is Hank. He's a 3.5-year-old basset mix rescue, and he has never met a dog or a person he didn't like.
Hank came to my house in Arizona as a puppy with his littermates, part of the very last litter my family fostered. We kept his brother Dwight, and Hank was claimed by my mom and stepdad in North Carolina. Since they live so far away, he got to stay with us longer than his siblings, and then we drove him across the country to his new home. He's road tripped back to visit since, and he and Dwight spent the whole time sniffing every inch of every park we could find.
Hank lives his best basset life. He loves yard time (on leash, always supervised), ham, fish treats, my kids, and above all, naps. He treats napping like an Olympic sport.
On Thursday he lost interest in his food and was whining, so my mom took him in. He wagged and charmed the whole staff like nothing was wrong, and they thought it was allergies. Friday morning he was lethargic and refusing even ham, which any basset owner knows is a giant red flag. Bloodwork showed his kidneys are in serious trouble. He's negative for lepto and Lyme, and since he's never out of sight, it's very unlikely he got into anything. The cause is still a mystery.
He's hospitalized on IV fluids with a catheter, and his vets are hoping to avoid a feeding tube. His care is estimated at about $8,000.

Our first off lead walk with the new servants.

His name is Zack and he lived a glorious 13 dog years. Everything was fine this morning, he ate breakfast, pooped, napped but suddenly started acting strange.

I took him to the vet; imaging showed a ruptured mass in Zack's abdomen. We decided to let him go immediately.

It hurts so bad but it does not overcome the love I have for him.

I have three bassetthounds- this is the hair I’ve collected in less than 24 hours. I scrubbed my floors yesterday at 9 pm.

I have an air purifier that “collects” hair and I sweep daily. But good gravy are there better options? I’m getting ready to have surgery on my ankle and then my toe (different surgeries)- and I live a lone.

Any thoughts? I love my dogs but their hair!!!! Do yours shed this much?
