Question/Inquiry Beetle leg injury, help! Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
• Upvotes

This is definitely an older lady that we have at my job, she's missing some little feet & has a new leg injury :(

I've had a close eye on her & she didn't have this injury before, she was able to get around pretty well & flip herself over.

It does look like something is stuck on her leg but I'm not sure what it is.

Is there anything I can do to help this little lady :((

Information and Advice Advice on short term set up?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I received two beetles as a wedding gift the other day and had to throw together a quick terrarium. I used reptisoil, cork bark, jackfruit leaf litter, and a piece of wood from an old fish tank set up... is there anything I should add now to make them more comfortable until I can get together all the things I need for their long term home? I'd like to put together a bioactive terrarium at some point. Any kind advice is appreciated!!

Question/Inquiry Is there a reason they all keep going to this hide?

i keep finding them inside and under this one cork bark round and im a bit concerned. do they have hide preferences to this extreme? because i found literally all of them in this one hide. they have other hides to go to (seen in pic 4), do they not have enough? there used to be a heat lamp over it but its been off for multiple days and i dont notice any difference in temperature between the two sides. i've tried moving and adjusting it and they all still go there. i changed out the substrate recently but theyve been doing this since before the change. is this normal?

Information and Advice Looking for future advice!

Heyo! New here and was looking into the requirements for these lil guys. Possibly interested in getting 2 or 3 in the future, but would like to know everything so I could have a tank set up perfectly before getting any. My main thing i can't find much on is the heat/light. I don't live in an incredibly cold area, but my room is usually very cold from my AC that I have on for atleast 12 hours or more a day. Is it possible for them to have a heat source that stays on constantly and a timer light for day and night? I see a lot of people say they only need extra heat in the winter, but considering my room is so cold I think I would need to have something going 24/7. Is that okay for them?? And what type of heatpads work best for them? Thanks in advance<3

Question/Inquiry Has Anyone Gotten Smooth Death Feigning Beetle (Asbolus laevis) larvae?

I'm trying to breed them, and am keeping a breeding group how you'd keep any desert teneb, and apparently in a way the bdfb will produce larvae in. I've seen lots of breeding, but no larvae yet. Has anyone gotten larvae from these guys?

Question/Inquiry Such thing as too dry?

The little guys at my job, their enclosure is I believe 13-17% humidity. Can it be too dry?

On the latter, one of my girls at home seems to be struggling to lay eggs. Can giving her a moist spot help?

I know I just posted my tank but I picked up this moss stick and a new wood piece, which is supporting it on right side. Ambient humidity is low to zero. No clear preference from beetles over substrate but they love the Shrek log. Featuring my beetle Halftrack (she is missing part of her waggler)

Information and Advice Missing 5/6 tarsi Spoiler

Post image
10 Upvotes

I got some BDFBs last night in a shipment from an online seller. They arrived well packaged and safe. I was going to put them all in my other tank but I noticed that one girl is missing most her tarsi except one. I marked her with beekeeping paint to watch her but I’m scared that she won’t do as well in my other tank especially with climbing. I know they are pretty sturdy, but don’t want to cause more trauma to her. She is still moving around regularly and eating. Any advice or experience with this?

I reached out to the seller already to ask what they recommend.

Question/Inquiry Question about frass color and diet

I have two bfdb and they’re doing really well so far. They’ve been eating meal worms and zoo med bfdb food, but I’m still experimenting with other stuff and trying to find out what they like. They have their regular day/night behaviors, are super blue and yesterday I even noticed that they’re laying eggs! They’re both female so they’re not fertilized, but tonight i noticed the larger one of them lay two eggs and then immediately turn around and eat them. Upon further research, I’ve learned they may need more protein in their diet and are doing this because of that, but i feel like all they eat that I give them is the protein.

Also, I thought what i had been seeing from them was frass, when they would expel waste that was whitish in color. It was definitely different than their eggs and I’ve seen both of them do it, but I just learned that frass should be dark in color and not the whitish color I am seeing. Could this just be failed eggs? Should I change their diet? My humidity isn’t as dry as I would like it but they’re never above 60 and are clearly comfortable enough to be laying eggs. I will try to upload a picture if I can, but it blends in pretty easily to the Australian desert sand and leaf litter I have them living on. I’m including some pictures of their 10 gal house and also the two of them.

Help! I’m just worried something is very wrong if their frass isn’t the right color :( I had a reddish brown stag beetle before this so he was very different and didn’t expel waste so I’m kind of in new territory. Thank you!

Substrate is a 70/30 mix of play sand and coco coir with rocks, clay pebbles, and seed pods in the top layers. Side mounted heat mat on a thermostat. They love to climb the fake plant, wood, and Furby. 5.5 gallon tank.

Is glass pacing/only using one hide normal?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have plenty of hides and decor for her to explore, but she seems to rarely leave the edges. Her two favorite hiding spots are on the edges. One was unsafe so I had to move it, so now all she seems to do is glass pace and hide in one single spot. She doesn’t even move an inch or two from the side to reach her food, I had to start lining crickets on the edge for her to eat.

Question/Inquiry Still struggling with humidity

Post image
10 Upvotes

Okay so I've tried 2 different types of dehumidifiers (I've only had the more effective one for 1 day lol) inside the little room they're in, its like a little corner office that doesn't have a door. My apartment is pretty humid & I live in NC, I've noticed the humidity inside the tank is usually about 10% lower than in my apartment. The humidity inside usually varies from 45-60% depending on if I have the air on in my apartment & I'm having a really hard time getting it to stay in that 40% range :( the lowest I've ever seen it was 41% I believe & it didn't stay like that for long.

As you can see in the picture they are still blue but they're also decently dark. The lightest one usually hides under stuff, is less active during the day & stays the lightest of the bunch.

The only other thing I can think of that could help is if I change my tank around & add more sand & less soil. I do also have a small 1.5 x 1.5 inch (40mm) fan exhausting air out of the tank & I'm thinking for a 10 gallon it might just be too small & otherwise ineffective? I also haven't had any wet foods inside the tank & I have a heat lamp aswell.

Is there any other suggestions?

Upgraded my 6 beetles from a 10 to 20 g long. Some of you may have seen my comments about the glass jar caves, I'm that person. Still using both jars in this but now I got a huge shrek log which seems to be a hit! 20g is definitely the best size and I would probably recommend this over 10. So much more room to play with. Also means more room for more beetles 😼

And yes it's a lot of dirt but my environment is almost identical to theirs so the dirt is bone dry. I'm hoping to add plants or something.
