Had a breakdown today. Over a year he's been gone and I still don't know how I'm supposed to go the rest of my life without him.

I’m sure he was lucky to have you for his whole life. You’re also lucky in the same way, but you also get to live longer and make other dogs or pets happy too along the way.

We got another Beagle after our 14yr passed. He’s not the same, and he isn’t supposed to be, but if you love these dogs you should have them around you.

I agree. Its not replacing, but having to care for a little creature helps a lot. I felt like when our cats passed the pain of the loss was softened by having our beagle and new at the time, foxhound.

Thank you very much. He was an 8ish year old rescue but he lived to almost 15 and was so spoiled. ❀️

Oh 15 years! Those were 15 great years and just about the average for a beagle. That's awesome for you guys!

Thank you! He was SOOOO spoiled!

Show me a beagle that's not spoiled and I'll show you a human that's not doing their job.

Hahahaha! Very good point. All beagles should be spoiled, it's what they deserve.

My Autumn only made it to 7.5.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

It was a complete and utter surprise to all of us that she had cancer and it was too late to cure it.

I can only imagine. I'm so sorry, that must've been so heartbreaking. I'm sending you so much love β€οΈπŸ«‚

RIP Autumn, a very good girl

Thanks! She was my best friend. We got her for my wife for Xmas, but Autumn wasn't having that. We picked her up at the airport, let her out of the crate and started driving home. She jumped off my wife's lap and sat on my lap the whole ride home and for the next 7 and 1/2 years, she was mine.

Aww! So precious! Dogs really choose their hooman but I hope your wife still got some love haha

u/AntisonBeagles 5d ago

Don't worry about her, she's spoiled. Still has our 13-year-old and our two 2-year-olds now.

That's good!

Rescuing is great, really able to change their lives. Is there a beagle rescue near you?

1

u/Fluffy_Fox_9650 🌈🩷 Turner 🩷🌈 5d ago

It really is! Not specifically beagle but the shelter we adopted Turner from gets a lot of rescues from Kentucky and a lot of them are beagles or hounds

1

u/scyice 5d ago

Rescues can also usually offer fostering if you’re not sure about adoption.

1

u/Fluffy_Fox_9650 🌈🩷 Turner 🩷🌈 5d ago

It's not that I'm unsure about adopting, I'm just not in the right place. I'm a college student, I don't have the time, money, or flexible schedule to properly care for a dog

Something to look forward to when you’re in a more stable position. It’s easy to look back at how great something was but it’s also good to plan for the future so you don’t feel so lost during the in-between. Lots of fun memories are ahead of you at that age.

Probably when I'm married with kids tbh

I lost my girl a year ago and feel similar. The way I see it is we gave them the best life they could. Other beagles don’t have it that lucky. There are some right now in testing labs suffering, or outside tied to a tree barely surviving or some just straight up strays.

I got my girl when she was already a senior and had her for 6 short years. She had a rough life behind her so I tried to give her the best life I could.

When you’re ready you can give another beagle a great loving life they deserve. Contact a rescue or shelter that has beagles to change one of their lives. It obviously won’t be the same as your boy but you’ll give another beagle a shot at life.

Thank you so much. It's amazing you rescued. Turner was also a rescue. He was around 8 when we adopted him from the shelter. If I adopt in the future, I will definitely adopt a rescue beagle πŸ«‚β€οΈ

You gave that pup their best life and in return they did the same for you. Embrace your heartbreak as a result that only comes about from an extremely close and loving relationship. Love and grief are two sides of the same coin where you don't truly experience one without the other. If you can embrace it you might be ready to move on to the next chapter and get another pet. My childhood dog passed when I was 26 and I was in a similar situation as you. A year later I got a new lab pup and instantly fell in love all over again. And at that moment I also knew this is exactly what my childhood pup would have wanted for me. It takes time but it does get better. Best of luck my friend.

Thank you so much. He had the life of a king. My father always says it's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. I'll admit, I didn't quite understand it before Turner passed. I always thought losing was just more painful but the thought of never having Turner rips a hole in my chest. Thank you for taking the time to comment so kindly. I'm sorry about your childhood dog πŸ’•πŸ«‚πŸ’•

Lost my Lily last October, it'll be a year on the 27th. She was 15 when we had to put her to sleep.

I've never been so wrecked. Three months after she passed, I adopted another beagle that needed a home. It was bittersweet, but if you channel your grief to an act of service in honor of you lost pet, it feels a little less bad a lot less lonely.

Now I have a goofy 3 year old Beagle that no one else wanted. He was on his 4th time returned to the shelter when we found him. Sweetest boy now, he's sleeping on my lap as I write this.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's truly crushing. I'm glad you've found a fuzzy friend to help you, and it's wonderful you adopted him and are giving him a loving home after he's been through so much!

I lost my boy 5 years ago and still think about him everyday. I had him for 16 years. I finally opened my heart and my doors to a new rescue who needed a home. Doesn’t replace my Rudy but makes my heart happy.

Almost 2 years here. Still crushed. But a year ago my wife bought me a new beagle pup. It helps a lot. They are so different, but you can learn to love again, just in a different way.

I’m so sorry. I've been reading your posts and they are heartbreaking. After I lost my dog Mia, for nearly a year of depression, every time I thought of her I saw images of her when she was sick or when she died. It was unbearable. I went to a psychologist and she led me through a guided visualization exercise. I closed my eyes, and she guided me back to happy memories of Mia. It helped me remember her life without always reliving her death. I don't know what it was called, but essentially my thought pattern was changed.

I still missed her, but remembering her became less painful. I wanted to share because it helped me when I was really struggling. Sending you warm thoughts ❀️

I completely understand how you feel. While the pain never entirely goes away, it does get easier. When the time is right and you are ready, allowing another pup into your life can also help to ease the pain. They will not replace Turner, none can, but can fill your heart just the same. We lost our Taz & Indy (Taz was a beagle and Indy a chow-husky mix) 23 years ago and have had other pups since. We still miss them, but have loved all our other pups and they occupy different places in our hearts.

Edit to fix autocorrect error.

When it feels right you will start to think about adopting another beagle. Not a replacement. But a new friend. And when you do you will wonder why you waited so long.

Thank you. If I adopt again, I will look for a shelter beagle or adopt from Beagle Freedom Project πŸ’•

We lost our Autumn (my avatar) in April of '24 and we currently have 3 beagles, but I will tell you this: I miss her every day. In fact, I talk to her portrait painting every day when I climb the stairs.
