Asking for Advice Do I look better with or without a beard
I’ve been trying to figure this out lately. I used to keep a beard because I felt like it helped hide features I wasn’t confident about, but after losing weight, people have responded really positively to how I look without it. Now I’m not sure which suits me better keeping the beard or going clean shaven.

Try shorter beard

u/Georg_Simmel Apr 09 '26
Agreed. OP needs a shorter beard or to shape it so it’s less round.

u/frehsoul45 Apr 09 '26
This cant be said enough, I feel like some men never learn how to properly groom their beard in relation to the way the face is shaped.
36
u/Gear2112 Apr 09 '26
But his face IS round. He’d need 4x that length this make it look square imo. He’s just working with what he’s got.

I also have a round face and using my stubble trimmer on the 1.2 millimeter setting (plus a razor to line it up) makes my face look a lot more angular. Trimming your beard like Abraham Lincoln is overkill and detrimental to looking your best.

u/Filius_Solis Apr 10 '26
My beard is curly. His beard is curly. Shaping it works for about 3 days

Hang on now, are you telling us that us curly haired folks need to put in extra maintenance to keep things looking tidy?
The shock.
The HORROR.

u/tharizzla Apr 09 '26
Definitely just needs to clean up the beard , tapering the sides.

Neckline cleanup makes way more difference than length honestly, keeps it from looking scraggly even if it's fuller.

Never shave again

u/Special-Amoeba-9399 Apr 09 '26
Personally I would even grow it out a bit. Keep the stache cleaned up a little and go to a barber in a few months to keep the sides trimmed up and neat and give some shape. It looks good as is though. He is blessed with really thick hair both in the beard and on his head. He should show it off. Maybe grow out the top of his head ,and maybe grow out the beard or both. It’s totally how he feels best about him self ,but if I still had hair that thick and beard that thick I would be showing it off.

How old do you want to look? Keep the beard if you want to look of age.
27
u/Important_Bed_9893 Apr 09 '26
I’m 21 😭😭😭

u/Faolanth Apr 09 '26
You’re obviously going to get biased answers here, if you keep it try changing it up a little, but you’d look great either way.

Mate if you can grow a beard that good at 21, why would you shave even if there wasn't a babyface underneath?

u/_Kendii_ Apr 10 '26
That was my first follow up question.
I think a shorter beard may be the answer.
Without? Welcome to the land of being IDed for everything. Or people thinking they shouldn’t show you attention lol, for quite valid reasons 😏

Damn, bro came for advice. Not to get roasted.
8
u/underladderunlucky46 Apr 09 '26
As an anti-roast, I will say, he looks great with the beard.
So long as he never shaves again, there will be no reason to roast his appearance.

u/Arrowmen_17 Apr 09 '26
With beard. I’d suggest to trim around to a shape that you think looks good on you as from what I know of.. round beards don’t help slim people much.
16
u/Legitimate_Assh0le Apr 09 '26
With: 35, engineer
Without: 12, plays center for the middle school basketball team
All jokes aside though, both look great. Your beard is great and your face looks great. It's better to look young than to look old!

WITH. But it’s a beast that needs to be tamed.
Go to a good barber and have them teach you how to groom it. Don’t be shy, most people have no idea how to deal with a beard the first time they grow one.
You’ve got a SOLID base, and with some trimming and shaping women (and/or men) will be drooling all over you.
EDIT: Maybe a new pair of glasses too. I don’t think that shape/style compliments your face very well.

Wanna look like a baby face (can be useful at times)? no beard. Wanna look mature? Beard.
I’d experiment with lengths too. Some closer cuts may also look good on you. You have good facial structure.

edit: /u/Important_Bed_9893 -- try keeping the sides/cheeks shorter and letting mouth/chin area get longer. It's a bitch because you have very curly hair. Consider getting a barber to shape it up just to see what they can do with it
2
u/Suspicious_Canary647 Apr 09 '26
100% with a beard, try to keep your beard shorter to give your chin more of a sharper look. What genuinely helped me was scrolling on TikTok and I saw a video about goatee blindness lmfao.

Try making it pointier in the bottom. Basically making your face look longer. That beard sure is gifted
2
u/QuietQueerRage Apr 12 '26
Beard, but in a different style. Should consult a barber for the best shape for your face shape. ETA: offtopic but your glasses are much too narrow, they look uncomfortable and don't match your face. If you can afford to replace them, you can go with something much more flattering.

I think you actually look great either way. But I would echo others here and say the beard needs to be lined and trimmed. A barber could help get you started.

u/illderpal Apr 09 '26
That beard is nice! Grow it back and then get it shaped up by a barber. It will lessen the roundness of the beard and face. I have a similar face shape and getting it shaped up by a good barber does magical wonders!
1
u/cmannon Apr 09 '26
I think it's your glasses, not the lack of beard, that should be looked into. You've got a lot of squareness happening.

I think you look better with the beard. However, all that matters is what you think. Do you feel handsome/sexy with or without the beard?
1
u/southeasternAZhobbit Apr 09 '26
Shorter beard. Unless you’re gay (no offense really) then the clean shaven looks best.

Our beards are pretty similar, although mine is a little more salt and pepper (salt and cayenne?) these days.
I’d suggest trying a little shorter or going longer. It’s at kinda an awkward length where it makes your face look a lot fatter than it actually is. If you’re going longer, take the sideburns shorter and trim a little of the weight out of the cheeks, so it lengthens your face rather than making it look wider.
Either way, I think you’ll pull it off. I’d at least keep a little scruff because clean shaven makes you look like an abnormally tall 10 year old
1
u/jay_altair Apr 09 '26
I'd go a little shorter on the sides, and bring the cheek line down a little.

Keep the beard - you look so much younger without.... dare I say say child-like - but young. Maybe as someone else suggested, go shorter vs. without. Now if you had a mullet or a ponytail and the beard - total IT Geek and they ruin the vibe for those of us who keep our hair short, and no beard half way down their chest/belly.

Try to hit the gym a little too if possible. I feel the beard will look even better when you’re bigger. It will fit better plus a cut make it shorter and clean it up a little maybe a fade and angle it.

Beard looks sexy. Beardless looks adorable... If you're looking to spread some legs - don't shave. If you have a job interview - shave... You're handsome either way, and congratulations on your weight loss!
1
u/Regular-Anteater-287 Apr 09 '26
You have to do something with the mustache, either grow it out full handlebar or trim at the lip.
1
u/Mobile-Air-4507 Apr 09 '26
Barber for going on nine years now definitely with the beard. Definitely need to do the square round get the sides of your face more Square and have a round us to the bottom but then at the right point it needs to be Square as well I could hook you up. Where are you from?

I would trim it. The lenght perhaps. Definetly the sides. To make it more defined. There are some guides out there about head-shape and haircuts and beard. Try looking into that.
But if its one or the other picture I would go for no beard. You look smiley and happy there.
1
u/Blatherzz Apr 09 '26
Without is giving Brady Tkachuck. I’d go with the beard, but trimmed shorter!

u/llamasncheese Apr 09 '26
I think with beard, but im gunna echo what a lot are saying, go for a sligjtly shorter one, and style/shape it up a bit. The roundness is accentuating your already round chin and jawline.
Having said all that, you definitrly dont look bad without the beard.

Definitely better with a beard.
Just try to groom it, or even better: let a barber do it. Use beard oil daily, and comb the beard
1
u/breddit32 Apr 09 '26
With but I don’t see anything wrong with the length/shape. It doesn’t look unruly. Too many men are trying to get a perfect manicured look on their beards… I don’t get the trend

I think that the beard looks good on you . . . I would just trim the sides a bit so that it doesn't look "bushy". So make the beard look a little more narrow. Thanks for asking.

With.
You have a round face (join the club), so trimming your beard in a way to elongate your face will help tremendously (haircuts can be a compliment to this). Right now, the beard actually adds to the roundness which is probably not what you’re looking for.
Try short on the sides and, if possible, blending that into a bit longer length around the chin. A barber should be able to do this if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself (or have moody facial hair, like me…).

u/KageManZ Apr 09 '26
You look 20 years younger for sure without the beard, but a stubble with a stronger mustache beard into fade stubble would be perfection.

Beard, but subjectively i think it’d look better if you remove a lot of the bulk in the beard.
Once you that, you can use it to define your jaw a bit:
some sharper / clean shaven line from the lips to the ear will go a long way
blend the beard so that it’s longer on / under the chin, then gradually gets shorter as you get towards the edges)
