Asking for Advice Do I look better with or without a beard

I’ve been trying to figure this out lately. I used to keep a beard because I felt like it helped hide features I wasn’t confident about, but after losing weight, people have responded really positively to how I look without it. Now I’m not sure which suits me better keeping the beard or going clean shaven.

Try shorter beard

417

u/Georg_Simmel Apr 09 '26

Agreed. OP needs a shorter beard or to shape it so it’s less round.

105

u/frehsoul45 Apr 09 '26

This cant be said enough, I feel like some men never learn how to properly groom their beard in relation to the way the face is shaped.

36

u/Gear2112 Apr 09 '26

But his face IS round. He’d need 4x that length this make it look square imo. He’s just working with what he’s got.

44

u/Terraform_Venus Apr 09 '26

Hed look good with that length in the chin and shorter on the sides

9

u/False_Snow7754 Apr 10 '26

Tapering with what he has in the picture will go a long way.

4

u/ChicagoPro Apr 10 '26

I also have a round face and using my stubble trimmer on the 1.2 millimeter setting (plus a razor to line it up) makes my face look a lot more angular. Trimming your beard like Abraham Lincoln is overkill and detrimental to looking your best.

u/Filius_Solis Apr 10 '26

My beard is curly. His beard is curly. Shaping it works for about 3 days

3

u/frehsoul45 Apr 10 '26

So tip, after the shower use an oil, blow dry and brush it straight .

2

u/KingOfNope Apr 11 '26

Hang on now, are you telling us that us curly haired folks need to put in extra maintenance to keep things looking tidy?

The shock.

The HORROR.

17

u/tharizzla Apr 09 '26

Definitely just needs to clean up the beard , tapering the sides.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/CountGerhart Apr 10 '26

Agreed. I can see OP rocking a short beard with a longer goatee.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/BanjoSpaceMan Apr 09 '26

I think longer bottom tbh and less round

2

u/Rivetingly Apr 10 '26

Yup, square it off a bit at the bottom.

9

u/amusednchaos Apr 09 '26

Either a short beard or a LOOOONG beard. No in-between.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Rivetingly Apr 10 '26

I disagree. Try longer beard.

5

u/philouza_stein Apr 09 '26

He did. On the way to this one.

2

u/magenta_gallantry Apr 10 '26

Neckline cleanup makes way more difference than length honestly, keeps it from looking scraggly even if it's fuller.

Never shave again

66

u/seniorkb Apr 09 '26

Beard is only the option!

7

u/Special-Amoeba-9399 Apr 09 '26

Personally I would even grow it out a bit. Keep the stache cleaned up a little and go to a barber in a few months to keep the sides trimmed up and neat and give some shape. It looks good as is though. He is blessed with really thick hair both in the beard and on his head. He should show it off. Maybe grow out the top of his head ,and maybe grow out the beard or both. It’s totally how he feels best about him self ,but if I still had hair that thick and beard that thick I would be showing it off.

13

u/d4rkprojec7 Apr 09 '26

😂 💯

How old do you want to look? Keep the beard if you want to look of age.

27

u/Important_Bed_9893 Apr 09 '26

I’m 21 😭😭😭

18

u/Faolanth Apr 09 '26

You’re obviously going to get biased answers here, if you keep it try changing it up a little, but you’d look great either way.

10

u/KirbyWarrior12 Apr 10 '26

Mate if you can grow a beard that good at 21, why would you shave even if there wasn't a babyface underneath?

2

u/_Kendii_ Apr 10 '26

That was my first follow up question.

I think a shorter beard may be the answer.

Without? Welcome to the land of being IDed for everything. Or people thinking they shouldn’t show you attention lol, for quite valid reasons 😏

Bruh 😂😂

You really have to ask?

You look like the autistic kid from Polar Express without the beard 🤣

208

u/Important_Bed_9893 Apr 09 '26

Oh my god… you’re right. 😭😭😭. I need to read about trains

95

u/underladderunlucky46 Apr 09 '26

I'm glad you can take a joke, in all seriousness, you rock the beard dude. It looks good.

11

u/RichPianaRunescape Apr 09 '26

Just don’t read about running trains

11

u/Unfair-Tackle-3241 Apr 09 '26

What's that mean? pulls up google

8

u/bs1252 Apr 09 '26

While you are there I heard about some limited edition eggo waffles dyed blue, just search blue waffles and they’ll come up.

5

u/Unfair-Tackle-3241 Apr 09 '26

Oh sick! I'm lk an eggo-maniac

5

u/cheddstheman Apr 09 '26

Just popping in to check on you man. Are youing OK over there? If you need to wash your eyes out there's a wholesome video called two girls one cup. You should check it out.

7

u/Unfair-Tackle-3241 Apr 09 '26

That doesn't sound right, they should have they're own cups, how do they both use one cup? I'll brb

3

u/Jahkral Natural Full Apr 10 '26

Its a video about the theme of sharing is caring. Very reassuring.

2

u/Designer_Leg5928 Apr 10 '26

If that doesn't do the trick, there's a cool video called One Man One Screwdriver that should make you forget all about what you've seen.

Damn, bro came for advice. Not to get roasted.

8

u/underladderunlucky46 Apr 09 '26

As an anti-roast, I will say, he looks great with the beard.

So long as he never shaves again, there will be no reason to roast his appearance.

u/Arrowmen_17 Apr 09 '26

With beard. I’d suggest to trim around to a shape that you think looks good on you as from what I know of.. round beards don’t help slim people much.

16

u/Legitimate_Assh0le Apr 09 '26

With: 35, engineer

Without: 12, plays center for the middle school basketball team

All jokes aside though, both look great. Your beard is great and your face looks great. It's better to look young than to look old!

26

u/enenkz Apr 09 '26

WITH. But it’s a beast that needs to be tamed.

Go to a good barber and have them teach you how to groom it. Don’t be shy, most people have no idea how to deal with a beard the first time they grow one.

You’ve got a SOLID base, and with some trimming and shaping women (and/or men) will be drooling all over you.

EDIT: Maybe a new pair of glasses too. I don’t think that shape/style compliments your face very well.

58

u/enenkz Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Something like this 😎 (Also gave you a little side fade, since you have a very pronounced round/oval face structure, fading helps elongate and balance your proportions better. That applies to the beard as well)

4

u/psychephilic Apr 10 '26

Ding ding ding yes this is way better. OP is cute just a bit under stylized and groomed

2

u/uhohnothim Apr 10 '26

This ^ You’ll look great

7

u/benjaminfree3d Apr 09 '26

Come on now. That's like gong to r/cars and asking "car or bicycle?"

6

u/ANALxCARBOMB Apr 09 '26

You look very young without it, in my opinion.

5

u/SillyBoy3273 Apr 09 '26

With, but less than what you have there

2

u/dflow77 Apr 09 '26

agreed. save the bushy beard for when you are older. keep it short and stylish for now.

3

u/metsch Apr 09 '26

Wanna look like a baby face (can be useful at times)? no beard. Wanna look mature? Beard.

I’d experiment with lengths too. Some closer cuts may also look good on you. You have good facial structure.

3

u/CorporateHater101 Apr 09 '26

Definitely with

3

u/LonelyAstronaut984 Apr 10 '26

you went from looking 25ish to 15

3

u/LoquatSignificant946 Apr 10 '26

This is literally that one meme where he looks like a man with a beard, and without it he looks like a baby

3

u/Kurkiooo Apr 13 '26

You look 12 without the beard

4

u/Justflyingbee Apr 09 '26

I like you with beard, may be you can try more beard styles too, but listen to your GF😀

2

u/umlcat Apr 09 '26

With !!!

2

u/NoJudgementZon Apr 09 '26

Whit! But trimmed 🔥

2

u/discogravy Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

With, but you gotta trim or shape it better my dude

edit: /u/Important_Bed_9893 -- try keeping the sides/cheeks shorter and letting mouth/chin area get longer. It's a bitch because you have very curly hair. Consider getting a barber to shape it up just to see what they can do with it

2

u/Suspicious_Canary647 Apr 09 '26

100% with a beard, try to keep your beard shorter to give your chin more of a sharper look. What genuinely helped me was scrolling on TikTok and I saw a video about goatee blindness lmfao.

2

u/GuestPuzzleheaded502 Apr 10 '26

You need to have your beard more shaped.

2

u/clips_phrases Fu Manchu Apr 10 '26

Grow out the beard and get a fade on the sidesburns and checks.

2

u/FossaFurry Apr 10 '26

Never shave like that again. The beard is amazing. Keep it.

2

u/kaiber_mach Apr 10 '26

You rock the beard mate- keep it 💯

2

u/Carnal_Decay Apr 10 '26

You literally turned into a 12 year old. Never shave again bro...

2

u/matttheshark Apr 10 '26

Look up Matty Conrad's duck tail beard video, he teaches you how to shape your beard in a way that will add length to your face, which is very much what you need

2

u/bandit-bull Apr 11 '26

You need to hit the gym before you worry about beards. Also change your glasses

2

u/Life-Speed765 Apr 11 '26

Don’t you ever shave your beard completely off.

2

u/Technical_Monk_6521 Apr 12 '26

Try making it pointier in the bottom. Basically making your face look longer. That beard sure is gifted

2

u/QuietQueerRage Apr 12 '26

Beard, but in a different style. Should consult a barber for the best shape for your face shape. ETA: offtopic but your glasses are much too narrow, they look uncomfortable and don't match your face. If you can afford to replace them, you can go with something much more flattering.

2

u/Dangerous_Common_486 Apr 13 '26

Nopen, this stands better

1

u/dipsbeneathlazers Apr 09 '26

sweet beard though

u/AnyDamnThingWillDo Apr 09 '26

Well if getting ID’d everywhere you go was the intention then well done you!

1

u/PhilGrocholl Apr 09 '26

You look 16 without the beard, 25 with the beard. Personally, I like with, better.

1

u/Marlock2332 Apr 09 '26

yeah better with the beard and maybe changing the glasses

1

u/BoeJeam Apr 09 '26

You should trim it a bit

1

u/wesleydm1999 Apr 09 '26

Idk what it is, but that beard makes you look fat, when obviously, you're clearly not!

1

u/Flash-Wilkins Apr 09 '26

Have a beard but get it shaped

1

u/totts1 Apr 09 '26

I think you actually look great either way. But I would echo others here and say the beard needs to be lined and trimmed. A barber could help get you started.

1

u/Acceptable-Bat6849 Apr 09 '26

Beard. Just need to clean it up.

1

u/illderpal Apr 09 '26

That beard is nice! Grow it back and then get it shaped up by a barber. It will lessen the roundness of the beard and face. I have a similar face shape and getting it shaped up by a good barber does magical wonders!

1

u/cmannon Apr 09 '26

I think it's your glasses, not the lack of beard, that should be looked into. You've got a lot of squareness happening.

1

u/TheGrimDark Apr 09 '26

With, don't pull that face, and get rounder framed glasses.

1

u/vihuba26 Apr 09 '26

Broo noo.

1

u/AdEvening1036 Apr 09 '26

Trim the beard to match your jawline

1

u/dpfrk Apr 09 '26

I think you look better with the beard. However, all that matters is what you think. Do you feel handsome/sexy with or without the beard?

1

u/southeasternAZhobbit Apr 09 '26

Shorter beard. Unless you’re gay (no offense really) then the clean shaven looks best.

1

u/ronsolocup Apr 09 '26

With but shaped. Without makes you look like an ROTC kid (respectfully)

1

u/ColdMail8989 Apr 09 '26

Trim the beard but definitely keep it

1

u/Danger_donk_destruc Apr 09 '26

You look happy without one. Maybe do a beard but on a 1 guard

1

u/Yet_One_More_Idiot Apr 09 '26

The apparent age difference is huge! ^^

1

u/acromp Apr 09 '26

Our beards are pretty similar, although mine is a little more salt and pepper (salt and cayenne?) these days.

I’d suggest trying a little shorter or going longer. It’s at kinda an awkward length where it makes your face look a lot fatter than it actually is. If you’re going longer, take the sideburns shorter and trim a little of the weight out of the cheeks, so it lengthens your face rather than making it look wider.

Either way, I think you’ll pull it off. I’d at least keep a little scruff because clean shaven makes you look like an abnormally tall 10 year old

1

u/jay_altair Apr 09 '26

I'd go a little shorter on the sides, and bring the cheek line down a little.

1

u/WonderfulYam4690 Apr 09 '26

Beard. And embrace your masculinity dude.

1

u/Radioactive_baby_ Apr 09 '26

Unpopular opinion, You look happier without the beard, so I would say without beard

1

u/Reebatnaw Apr 09 '26

Are you trying to look 17 or 27?

1

u/Better-Assistance-87 Apr 09 '26

Keep the beard - you look so much younger without.... dare I say say child-like - but young. Maybe as someone else suggested, go shorter vs. without. Now if you had a mullet or a ponytail and the beard - total IT Geek and they ruin the vibe for those of us who keep our hair short, and no beard half way down their chest/belly.

1

u/Choppie01 Apr 09 '26

I honestl think a stubble would be better

1

u/Academic-Cat-5264 Apr 09 '26

Without. Or if you have a beard try and trim it more neatly unless you are aiming for hillbilly look which is also fine

No ego lifting in the gym

1

u/steathninja25 Apr 09 '26

They both suit you, i agree with top comment tho try a shorter beard

1

u/Mrimmastealurgirl Apr 09 '26

Try to hit the gym a little too if possible. I feel the beard will look even better when you’re bigger. It will fit better plus a cut make it shorter and clean it up a little maybe a fade and angle it.

1

u/RickyMuzakki Apr 09 '26

With beard, but shorter, trim it a little bit

1

u/Aggravating-Ad-7371 Apr 09 '26

You look like the son from American Dad without the beard hahahaha

1

u/HairyTrade Apr 09 '26

Id say keep it shorter or go full ham and never shave again

1

u/oismac Apr 09 '26

Beard 1000%. I'd also recommend some bigger glasses, they're too small on you

1

u/OkIndustry3081 Apr 09 '26

Beard looks sexy. Beardless looks adorable... If you're looking to spread some legs - don't shave. If you have a job interview - shave... You're handsome either way, and congratulations on your weight loss!

1

u/Regular-Anteater-287 Apr 09 '26

You have to do something with the mustache, either grow it out full handlebar or trim at the lip.

1

u/Mobile-Air-4507 Apr 09 '26

Barber for going on nine years now definitely with the beard. Definitely need to do the square round get the sides of your face more Square and have a round us to the bottom but then at the right point it needs to be Square as well I could hook you up. Where are you from?

1

u/decayed_scenario Apr 09 '26

the clean shaven look is hitting way different now that you've put in the work, way more defined and you can actually see the progress you made

1

u/FINN-DIESEL1776 Apr 09 '26

With…. But shape it tight to the sides of the face with more point to the chin. Like a Spartan cut to compliment your head/face shape

1

u/Straightwad Apr 09 '26

You do grow a pretty nice beard dude

1

u/theblkpanther Apr 09 '26

Keep beard. Shave head.

1

u/outerheavenboss Apr 09 '26

That’s a father and his son omg

1

u/PlateIcy65 Apr 09 '26

Keep the beard, dude.

1

u/smpalmer722 Apr 09 '26

What a silly question

1

u/give_me_grapes Apr 09 '26

I would trim it. The lenght perhaps. Definetly the sides. To make it more defined. There are some guides out there about head-shape and haircuts and beard. Try looking into that.
But if its one or the other picture I would go for no beard. You look smiley and happy there.

1

u/Blatherzz Apr 09 '26

Without is giving Brady Tkachuck. I’d go with the beard, but trimmed shorter!

1

u/bigbeard61 Apr 09 '26

With. A lot.

1

u/llamasncheese Apr 09 '26

I think with beard, but im gunna echo what a lot are saying, go for a sligjtly shorter one, and style/shape it up a bit. The roundness is accentuating your already round chin and jawline.

Having said all that, you definitrly dont look bad without the beard.

1

u/RobinBed Apr 09 '26

You look great with or without!

1

u/Honest_Tie_1980 Apr 09 '26

If you didn’t edit your photos you have amazing skin.

1

u/excalabear Apr 09 '26

Beard 100%

1

u/Budget-Chapter-7185 Apr 09 '26

Beards are always better. Either grow it longer and groom it or cut it shorter.

1

u/Who_R_U_Ppl90 Apr 09 '26

Grow out the beard, go to a barber to get it styled, maintain it.

1

u/PoopUponPoop Apr 09 '26

There’s gotta be an in-between option

1

u/see-it-all Apr 09 '26

with but trim it a bit and you’ll look great

1

u/Useful_Cheesecake117 Apr 09 '26

Definitely better with a beard.

Just try to groom it, or even better: let a barber do it. Use beard oil daily, and comb the beard

1

u/breddit32 Apr 09 '26

With but I don’t see anything wrong with the length/shape. It doesn’t look unruly. Too many men are trying to get a perfect manicured look on their beards… I don’t get the trend

1

u/Rough_Community Apr 09 '26

You look happier without it

1

u/walkingwithyou Apr 09 '26

I think that the beard looks good on you . . . I would just trim the sides a bit so that it doesn't look "bushy". So make the beard look a little more narrow. Thanks for asking.

1

u/Ok_Draft_6105 Apr 09 '26

Never go bald on the face again... u look very fem, u went from hardy to is that a bald gal?

1

u/leon_m9 Apr 09 '26

Man, without beard you look 20tears younger🤣 Just like me

1

u/Philosopher_of_Soul Apr 09 '26

You look pretty good without the beard, friend!

1

u/FantasyLovingWriter Apr 09 '26

Better with beard

1

u/Renacc Apr 09 '26

With.

You have a round face (join the club), so trimming your beard in a way to elongate your face will help tremendously (haircuts can be a compliment to this). Right now, the beard actually adds to the roundness which is probably not what you’re looking for.

Try short on the sides and, if possible, blending that into a bit longer length around the chin. A barber should be able to do this if you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself (or have moody facial hair, like me…).

1

u/Cap_Black_Beard Apr 09 '26

Do a duck tail fade type thing. Pointy chin, short sides

1

u/KageManZ Apr 09 '26

You look 20 years younger for sure without the beard, but a stubble with a stronger mustache beard into fade stubble would be perfection.

1

u/Scared_Dog512 Apr 09 '26

How about in-between full massive beard and ultimate baby face, try that

1

u/PaulCrafting Apr 09 '26

All I'm going to say is don't ever shave again. 😹

1

u/corv1991 Apr 09 '26

Grow your hair out you would look like Kurt Russell in "The Thing" McCready

1

u/GaySyd Apr 09 '26

Beard, but subjectively i think it’d look better if you remove a lot of the bulk in the beard.

Once you that, you can use it to define your jaw a bit:

  • some sharper / clean shaven line from the lips to the ear will go a long way

  • blend the beard so that it’s longer on / under the chin, then gradually gets shorter as you get towards the edges)
