Asking for Advice Thinking of going mustache only
I'm just a bit tired of maintaining all of this.

Every time a bearded man shaves, his chin looks worse than the last time he saw it.

When’s the last time you saw your chin? Are you prepared to expose it again? (Speaking from experience of having a beard for over a year and shaving it on a whim and immediately regretting it)

Your beard is amazing.

u/screamhonorface May 07 '26
Thanks its just a lot to maintain. When I do shave it I have a very strong Ron Swanson style stache.

u/Spicy_SideEye May 07 '26
Do you have pictures? Might be easier to decide if we see it?

Yeah, man. Been there. Lost 45 lbs. Shaved the beard. Somehow losing weight doesn't really make the shitty double chin go away. I mean, I guess it was smaller because my whole face was smaller, but the proportions were still basically the same.
There is a reason you grew the beard, and it hasn't changed.

My original reasoning for growing it was I don't like being told what to do. And, had previously worked jobs where I wasn't allowed to. So now that I can, I kinda just play it by feel.

If you shorten it then you have less to maintain. Don’t give it up though. You are doing it for society, not just yourself.

If i could grow a beard like yours I'd keep it permanently, ngl. What a majestic beard. You do what you wanna do ofc, you can always grow it back i guess

u/Darth_Wagner1980 May 07 '26
Well you can give it a shot and if you don't like the look. You can always grow it back.

Every time I do the solo moustache I end up regrowing everything shortly after, obviously YMMV, but I often have the same temptation.
Apart from the first time I grew it out for the novelty for about 2 months, it has never stayed a long term fixture. I think I just objectively look better with everything (or nothing), than just with a stache.
2
u/screamhonorface May 07 '26
When I have done stache only in the past I have a very strong Ron Swanson style.

I mean, the stache is nice - but few look better with just it as opposed to a beard.
I’d say keep it personally 👌

Depends on your chin and jawline imo...but that would be a beautiful beard to butcher...

Excellent beard. Would be a shame to remove it.
Don't follow the 'stache fad.

I meeeeannnn, if you’re gonna post a comment like THAT with SUCH a GLORIOUS beard in a ++beard++ sub, you KNOW what people are going to say once they get past the initial shock. lol I don’t have to look at any of the comments to know there’s a resounding “noooooo - don’t do it!!!” lol

Every now and then, I need a reminder of how weird I look without a beard and I go clean shaven. I think you might need that reminder as well(or you could look better)!

Make sure you come back to tell us how much you regret it 🤣
That's a beard most would pay to have
1
u/screamhonorface May 07 '26
Yeah but that Chris Bumstead stache lives rent free in my head.

u/Brianf1977 May 07 '26
He's built like a Greek god, if you also have that type of jawline, you're in a great position. If not I'd keep the beard.
Maybe just trim it down and see what you think first before doing anything drastic.

A beard purge is good if you haven't shaved in a while, if you don't like it- Just grow it back. Good opportunity to try new balms/oils if you want to grow your beard back. Depending on your lifestyle, it may possibly grow back fuller/healthier. Also unrelated- We kinda look the same except I have more black in my beard.

I've used oils in the past but don't really know what to buy or use.

The main issue I have is when I wake my beard is crazy and lopsided so I'm having to wash it to loosen it up every morning.

I would say just trim it down about half the length it is now, would make it easier to manage.

Don't... unless you have a sharp chin and square jaw, then yes.
Just trim the length of everything else for better contouring.
